Locals object to possible new Queenstown ski area in New Zealand

A new proposed ski area rising above the Fernhill area of Queenstown is currently causing a lot of debate among locals and NZ skiers.

The proposal by Bowen Peak Ltd aims to reshape the Fernhill area of Queenstown with infrastructure including:

• Two funicular railways—from One Mile roundabout to Fernhill Heights, and up to the Ben Lomond Saddle
• A six-seat chairlift and new commercial ski field on Bowen Peak
• A 1,500 delegates conference centre, retail/hospitality precinct, and 500 space car park at One Mile
• A new suburb, "Fernhill Heights", featuring over 1,000 residential units plus 270 chalet-style homes

Investment in the infrastructure is projected to generate annual visitor spending of up to NZD 247 million and over 400 new jobs.

The project has been controversial as it is part of the Government's Fast Track Approvals pathway, enabling ministers to bypass standard environmental and council due process.

A grassroots group, 'Forward Whakatipu' has launched a petition against the development warning of the ecological risks to Ben Lomond and Bowen Peak, cultural insensitivity and fears of over-tourism.
