London Snow Show Returning to Olympia

The London ski show, currently known as Snow Show London, will be returning to Olympia and taking place over the weekend of October 18 and 19, 2025, it has been announced.

The show took plane in Olympia for over 20 years and its history at nearby Earl's Court, in various forms, dates back for the best part of a century, but it was moved by then organisers, the Telegraph Group, to Battersea in the early 2010s and has most recently been staged at the Excel Centre in Docklands by the latest operators, Raccoon Media Group.

The Where To Ski guides wind down

Those of us who've been around the mountains for a year or two will likely know of the "Where to Ski" and "Where to Ski and Snowboard" guides, created by Chris Gill and Dave Watts.

The books were the go-to references for anyone planning a ski trip, in pre-Internet days. They remained relevant well into the digital age with their comprehensive coverage of places to ski.

More French Ski Areas Opening This Weekend

Following the successful season start on schedule at Tignes and Val Thorens last weekend, with both resorts reporting the snow lying a metre deep up top, half-a-dozen more French areas are expected to start their seasons this weekend.

Amongst the areas expected to start their seasons this Saturday 30th November are Alpe d'Huez, Chamrousse, La Rosière, Les 2 Alpes, Montgenèvre (pictured above after the snowfall last week) and Val d'Isère.

Largest US Resort Opens for 24-25 Season

Utah's Park City Mountain has opened for its 24-25 season with 325 acres of terrain available, about 5% of its full area. Ten trails and the 3 Kings terrain park are open so far, served by lifts and carpets across two base villages.

It joins a growing list of now more than 100 US ski areas, including most of the country's well-known destination resorts, opening ahead of the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend in the country later this week.

Pila’s Spectacular New Gondola Partial Opening With New Pistes Too

A major upgrade to the ski area above the Aosta Valley resort of Pila will see the opening of the new 10-seater 'Couis 1' gondola lift and a new slope connecting Couis 1 to Couis 2.

The new lift, which represents the second section of the Pila-Couis route to be completed, will replace the historic double chairlift which dates back to the late 1980s. The gondola is part of the Pila - Couis project, an advanced lift that will allow skiers and non-ski tourists to reach an altitude of 2,700 metres in just 15 minutes.

French Ski Season Underway

The French ski season is underway with Tignes and Val Thorens the first two resorts to open this morning. Both resorts report snow depths at the metre mark on their highest slopes after heavy snowfall earlier this week ended a long spell of dry, sunny weather.

Southern Snow Show Coming To Dorset Next Weekend

The Snowtrax dry ski slope centre in Christchurch, Dorset, has announced that it's hosting a ski show over three days from next Friday November 29th, through to Sunday December 1st 2024.

The free-to-visit Southern Snow Show, at Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre, will be a "winter sports extravaganza" its organisers promise.

Snow For Scottish Slopes

Scottish ski centres are celebrating early snowfalls, although not yet quite enough to be able toi announced opening dates.

The Lecht has opened as early as Halloween in years past and has a reputation for opening whenever there's enough snow for a run to be completed.

Val Thorens cable car crashes just before official opening of resort

An accident on the Cime de Caron cable car on Tuesday may affect Val Thorens' opening weekend plans.

At least eight workers were injured, two seriously, after an accident that occurred at around 7.30am on 19 November.

The accident happened during challenging weather conditions when one of the cable cars crashed into the top station at 3195m while carrying 16 workers.

Up To 50cm Of Snowfall So Far in the Alps

[b]The much-heralded big snowfall in the Alps is getting underway. Les Arcs, which reports 20-cm of snowfall so far, is pictured above this morning.

Ski resorts in the Western Alps have reported up to 50cm (20") of snowfall so far and lighter snow has also been falling further east into Switzerland and Austria. Cervinia in Italy has reported to biggest accumulation on its high slopes so far.

Terrain Opening on Italian Side of Matterhorn Ski Region

More terrain will open on the Italian side of the shared Cervinia – Zermatt 'Matterhorn Glacier Paradise' ski area from tomorrow, Wednesday November 20th, it has been announced.[/b]

Zermatt's glacier ski area has been accessible again from the Italian side since October 26th, after an approximately two-month closure. About 30km of runs have been open already, one of the largest areas open in the world so far at this early part of the 24-25 season. It also has Europe's highest lift-served terrain.

Tignes & Val Thorens Confirm French Season Start This Weekend

French altitude ski resorts Tignes and Val Thorens have both confirmed they'll be opening the French ski season this coming weekend.

Val Thorens have said they'll definitely be open whilst Tignes are currently promoting their opening weekend as if there could never be any doubt.

Canada’s Whistler Blackcomb Opening (A Day) Early (This Week)

North America's largest ski area, Whistler Blackcomb in BC Canada, says it will open for its 24-25 season a day earlier than planned at the end of this coming week. [/b]

"We're opening one day earlier than planned, so get ready and get up here on Thursday November 21 when lifts on Blackcomb Mountain start spinning! Whistler Mountain's opening will follow on Friday, November 22 as planned," a spokesperson said.

Snowy Weather Expected in the Alps Next Week

After three weeks of mostly dry and sunny weather in the Alps with high pressure dominating Western Europe, there was excitement earlier this week for skiers as a front managed to break through and bring a dusting of snowfall, heaviest in the west and recorded as far south as the Pyrenees. Italy's Bardonecchia is pictured above on Tuesday.

New Six-Seater Chairlift For Cervinia

The 24-25 ski season already started at Cervinia thanks to the re-opening of its connection to Zermatt's glacier ski area on 26 October. Originally promoted as sharing Zermatt's year-round ski operation with the opening of the Alpine Crossing series of lifts between the two resorts, that's now been pared-back to an 11-month season in the latest marketing.

Glencoe Announces 24-25 Season Upgrades

With announcements of delayed season starts, survival-fundraisers and uncertainty again over the likely operation of Cairngorm's funicular for three of Scotland's five centres, Glencoe has posted a very positive message for the season ahead.

The West Coast resort that's closest to Scotland's largest city, Glasgow, has laid out a host of improvement for the coming season and says they're committed to opening from day one of the season and staying open 7-days a week to the latest possible date.

6 European Resorts Open Thanks To Snowfarming

Six European ski areas are currently open in four countries thanks to snow-farming, the practice of stockpiling snow from the previous season through the summer then spreading it back out on the slopes in Autumn as temperatures, hopefully, cool.

Scotland’s Nevis Range May Not Open Until February

Scotland's Nevis Range ski area says it probably won't open its ski slopes until February this winter.

The news comes as the four other Scottish areas prepare for the start of the 24-25 season as the Highland bask in warm sunshine and some of the highest temperatures in the UK.

At Least 15 US Ski Areas Open This Weekend

At least a 15 US ski areas are expected to open this weekend in seven western states, many of them due to significant snowfall in the Rockies this week, where multiple resorts have posted over two feet of fresh snow since Saturday.

Most of the resorts opening will be in Colorado where five more centres will join already open Arapahoe Basin, Keystone and Wolf Creek.

Canada’s 24-25 Ski Season Underway

Canada's ski season is underway with Lake Louise Ski Resort opening for the 24/25 winter season.

It claimed first in the country after its fellow Banff resort Mt Norquay postponed a planned opening on Saturday by a week.

Skiers are reported to have arrived bright and early, with the resort's Glacier Express starting up at 9am accessing Bald Eagle, Wiwaxy and portions of Easy Street runs, rated beginner and intermediate terrain. The lower Easy Street terrain park was also set up with early season features and a portion of the Learning Area was also open.

Lake Louise is opening today (5th November), with free lift passes next week for veterans ("Canadian military personnel, past and present")

Ski Season Starting In California and Utah This Weekend

More US ski areas say they'll start their seasons this coming weekend, including the first to open in the states of California and Utah.

In California Mt. Rose - Ski Tahoe will set its Lakeview Chair running with access to about 300 vertical metres of early-season terrain. There'll also be a beginners area and terrain park available.

New 6-Seat Chairlift For Italy’s Arabba

The Arabba – Marmaloda ski area on the Dolomiti Superski pass and part of the Sellaronda circuit will unveil a new high-speed detachable six-seat chairlifts to visitors this winter at the Padon Pass.

The new "Piani Di Ornella-Passo Padon" lift replaces an old double chairlift that dates back to 1982.

More US Ski Areas Opening From Saturday

A few days of cold and sometimes snowy weather has led to two more US ski areas announcing plans to open this weekend.

Colorado's Arapahoe Basin and Keystone, both amongst the 10 highest ski areas in the world, will open some terrain from Saturday, Keystone announcing it will have its target minimum of two miles of runs available from day one.
