Growing Number of Australian Resorts Ending Seasons Early

Record warm temperatures and strong winds are being blamed for a growing number of Australian ski areas announcing that their seasons are over, 3-5 weeks earlier than they'd wished.

Selwyn ski area announced a week ago that it was closing temporarily due to the conditions but said that it hoped to reopen if conditions allowed. It's now announced its season is over.

French Resort Recycles Parts To Build New Chairlift

In a major recycling initiative, French ski area Val Cenis, has managed to save 90% of the raw material needed to build a new high-speed quad chairlift by recycling parts from other lifts.

Lift manufacturer Poma undertook the plan to build the new Roches Blanches lift in as environmentally, friendly way as possible, in keeping with the wider strong green ethos of the Haute Maurienne Vanoise region where Val Cenis is located, located between the Vanoise National Park and the Italian border.

Park City Aims for New Shot Ski World Record

The latest stage of a long running contest between two famous US ski towns is set to go down on October 12th when Park City, Utah, will aim to win back the record for the most people drinking a shot from a shot ski simultaneously.

In fact, it's not just one shot ski but a ski in hundreds of sections lined up along side each other down main street. Park city has been battling Colorado's Breckenridge for the title for years now with both ski towns raising large sums for charities in the process.

Mürren-Schilthorn snowpark called Pända Snowpark

The snowpark at Mürren-Schilthorn in Switzerland is being renamed as the 'Pända Snowpark'.

The existing snowpark has been in place for 10 years, establishing itself as a freestyle destination. That has been helped by the resort hosting unique events such as the Swatch Nines.

Speculation That Vail Plan to Buy More Swiss Resorts

Rumours are flying that US Group Vail Resorts is planning to snap up more Swiss centres following its acquisition of Andermatt then Crans Montana.

Laax and Verbier are the two names being bandied about the most. Swiss newspaper Blick reported on speculation, meetings and insider reports of meetings between Laax management and Vail executives but note neither side will comment either way.

World's New Largest Indoor Snow Centre Opens in Shanghai

The world's new largest indoor snow centre has opened in Shanghai. It's currently in a "soft-opening" phase with full operations set to begin on September 6th.

Currently known as L*SNOW, the project has been on the drawing board and under construction for almost a decade. Originally named Wintastar, it has 90,000 square metres of indoor snow space, about 20,000 more than the previous largest in the city of Harbin in Northeastern China, which opened in 2016.

2024/25 FIS Snowboard Park & Pipe World Cup Tour Starting This Week

[b]Although most FIS World Cup Tours won't kick off for several more months on European glaciers, the 2024/25 FIS Snowboard Park & Pipe season gets underway later this week before the end of August.

Men's qualifiers will get the ball rolling at the Cardrona slopestyle World Cup in New Zealand on Friday, 30 August. With women's qualifications and men's semifinals set to go down on Saturday, 31 August, and finals for both the women and men slated for Sunday, 01 September.

August Snowfall on US Ski Slopes

Ski areas in California have been celebrating an early, light August snowfall ahead of the 24-25 ski season.

The brief snow shower, the result of an unusually cold front moving in after months of hot, dry weather, was reported on ski areas on Californian coastal mountains, including around Lake Tahoe, with Northstar pictured above, and at Mammoth Mountain to the south, pictured below.

Large US Resort Group Selling Ski Centres

The Powdr Corporation, which is one of the world's largest multi-ski-resort operating groups, has sold one of its eight US and Canadian ski areas and wants to sell three more.

The largest ski resort on the US East coast, Killington, has been sold and Powdr is reported to be looking for buyers for three more of its resorts, Oregon's Mt Bachelor, Eldora in Colorado and Silver Star in BC Canada.

First Snowfall of 24-25 In Canada

The first recorded snowfall of 24-25 has been briefly spotted on the Divide slopes above Sunshine ski area near Banff in Alberta, Canada.

The area is usually one of the first in North America to open for the season and is targeting November 8th for its opening day this season. Its neighbour and fellow member of the Banff Big 3 lift pass scheme. Mt Norquay, is aiming for November 1st, the earliest named season start date in North America, although others are hoping for October openings if conditions allow.

Les 3 Vallées Offering Cheaper Family Ski Passes

24-25 season news has started arriving at J2Ski Towers and Les Menuires have announced that the cost of a 3 Vallées lift pass will actually be lower this winter (exchange rates permitting), at least if you're in a family of three or more buying the same pass (of at least six consecutive days duration) for the same duration at the same time.

St Anton Clean Up After Major Flood Damage

St Anton is the latest resort in the Alps to have been hit and damaged by violent storms, but the resort says the clear up is progressing well.

The worst of the storms hit on Friday with land slips closing the Arlberg Pass and flash flooding in St Anton itself reported to have washed cars down streets and damaged many buildings.

Details of a new $500 million indoor snow resort have been revealed in Australia.

Winter Sports World has been nicknamed 'The Giant Esky' by Australians and will be one of the largest attraction projects in Australia and the biggest ever in Western Sydney.

50cm+ of Snowfall in New Zealand

New Zealand ski areas have reported up to 50cm (20") of snowfall through the weekend resulting in some of the best conditions of the year to date today.

However, there was so much snow many centres delayed opening, with others saying they could not open today at all until lifts are dug out and avalanche safety measures taken.

Canadian & US Resorts Announce 24-25 Season Opening Dates

As the last centre still operating in North America ends its 23-24 season, more and more Canadian and US resorts have been announcing their anticipated 24-25 season opening dates …with some possibly less than two months away.

Although no ski area has as yet named an October opening date, a number of centres are hoping to open then, if conditions permit it. Those conditions are typically plenty of low temperatures to allow snowmaking with a big early snowfall a bonus.

Year-Round Viewing Platform Opens Above Zell am See

Zell am See in the Austria's Salzburgerland is the latest to build a new high altitude year-round viewing platform.

The new Kaiserblick viewing platform at the top station of the Schmittenhöhe cable car, located at an altitude of 2,000m provides stunning views out over the resort and lake as well as more than 30 3,000-metre peaks, which, a resort spokesperson said, "…you can get up close and personal with using a telescope."

Vail Cuts Price of Australian Lift Passes – Kind Of

Vail Resorts, which operates three of Australia's largest ski areas, has announced a new Epic Australia 4-Day Pass which essentially cuts the cost of a day pass to $138 AUD (approximately $69) if you ski all four.

Lift ticket prices vary at all Vail's resorts depending on when and how purchased but currently a one day adult ticket for the country's largest resort, Perisher, tomorrow August 15th is priced at $241 AUD (£125) if bought in resort.

A Season Pass For 10 Day’s Scything

Vermont ski area Mad River Glen is offering workers who scythe undergrowth on their ski slopes for 10 days a free 24-25 season pass and an unspecified amount of cash.

The ski centre has been recruiting staff to take on the task, scheduled for 10 days in September. The scything day begins at 7:00 am and the mowing continues until about 3:00 pm, with "many breaks."

Austrian Glaciers Announce Autumn Opening Festivities

Austrian glacier ski centres have begun announced their planned season opening dates in early autumn.

Historically eight Austrian glaciers open their seasons in September and October although one of these, the Dachstein, has now given up offering alpine skiing and others have slipped to later opening date with most now targeting October rather than September, although a few still hope to open at the end of the month if conditions allow.

Final Week of North America’s 23-24 Season

The final week of North America's 23-24 season, which began in Colorado in late October last year, has begun.

The Palmer Snowfield on Mt Hood in Oregon, above Timberline Lodge resort, has seen temperatures top 80F in recent weeks and its snowfield drop to about a mile of terrain left open. It says it will end its nine-month plus 23-24 season next Sunday. It's the last ski area still open in North America and normally has the continent's longest season every year.

Snowbird Replacing 53 Year Old Lift

Utah ski area Snowbird is working to replace one of its oldest lifts, the Wilbere Chairlift, ahead of the upcoming 24-25 season.

The original Wilbere Lift opened in 1971, a double-chairlift, was one of Snowbird's original lifts and its replacement, though necessary, led to a lot of nostalgia at the resort when it had its final day of operations in spring.

An Indoor Ski Centre For Bosnia

Bosnia's Ravna Planina ski centre near 1984 Winter Olympic host city Sarajevo has announced plans to build indoor ski run on one of their slopes.

The resort, which was the first in the country to install a modern gondola after the end of the Balkan Wars, said it intends to build a 350-metre long ski slope, with a drop of 100 vertical metres and width of 45 metres and complete its construction by 2029.

Alpine 100 set up to raise funds for GB winter athletes

A new social lottery raising funds for British winter-sport athletes has been launched.

'Alpine 100' was set up to help create funding for winter sport athletes at all levels of the pyramid.

Individuals can take part from as little as £5 each month. Half of the monthly fund is redistributed, and half given in grants to athletes.

Direct Flights from Heathrow to Scandinavian Mountains To Resume

SAS airlines will resume the service launched between Heathrow and the recently built Scandinavian Mountains Airport this winter.

Flights will run on Sundays in the latter half of the season between 2nd February and 30th March 2025, taking in the February school holidays with prices from GBP 258.09 per person return.

Les Menuires Mall 60th Anniversary Renovation

Les Menuires has always been marketed as the family-friendly, most-affordable ski-in/out resort of the world's largest ski area, the 3 Valleys.

Its functional concrete architecture, one of the earliest developments in the French Alps, has had a chequered history, originally state of the art, then fairly quickly decried as dated and ugly, it's had a renaissance in recent years, winning architectural awards as opinions have shifted once more and seeing old apartments within removed and often two 1960s/70s sized apartments made in to one upscale 2020s model.

Austria’s Scheffau Installing World’s Highest Capacity Chairlift

A new chairlift being installed for next winter at Scheffau, part of Austria's Skiwelt region, will be able to carry more passengers than any other chairlift in the world, the resort says.[/b]

The new 8-seater Eibergbahn is also one of the most energy self-sufficient chairlifts in the world with around half of its energy requirements being met by a photovoltaic solar farm on the roof of one of the lift stations.

Australia’s Largest Resort Reports All Lifts Running For First Time In 2 Years

Perisher ski resort, Australia's largest and the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere outside South America, has reported all 46 of its lifts are running as of today.

"With Olympic spirit in the air, we're thrilled to announce 100% of lifts running with the opening of Olympic T-Bar today – the first time since 2022," a resort spokesperson said on Saturday, August 3rd.

Jackson Hole Announces New Lift

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) have announced 24-25 season dates, a new lift, and says lift tickets and other services are already on sale online with discounts for early buyers.

The famous Wyoming ski area will open on November 29, 2024 and its season will run until April 13, 2025, offering 137 days of skiing and riding.
