Avoriaz Launching Season With Gear & Music Festival

Avoriaz will kick off its 24-25 season with an opening festival weekend that brings together new gear testing, bands and DJs and discounted lift passes.
Rock On Snow, running from 13-15 December 2024, will bring together over 65 brands, offering the chance to test the latest snow sports equipment—skis, snowboards, bindings, boots, helmets, masks —before it hits the market.

English Indoor Snow Centres Join Global Ski Area Pass

Two indoor snow centres in England have made the unusual move of joining a giant global season long pass.
The snow centres at Hemel Hempstead and its sister facility at the Trafford Centre near Manchester are amongst more than 50 conventional ski areas that have joined the global Indy Pass which now includes more than 230 ski centres worldwide.

Mürren Starting 24-25 Season on Saturday Thanks to Snow Farming

There's currently glorious, warm, sunny weather to end-October in the Alps which makes for lovely skiing conditions on the slopes of the 15 or so glacier areas already open, but is not such good news for snowmaking or the snowpack.
However, Mürren is undeterred and will begin its 24-25 winter season this weekend at the Schilthorn, thanks to an epic snowfarming operation.

Spanish Snow

Ski areas across the Iberian peninsular, including Europe's most southerly ski area, Sierra Nevada, have seen significant weekend snowfalls, raising anticipation levels for the winter ahead.
There was even fresh October snowfall for Portugal's lone ski area, Serra da Estrela.

Southern Hemisphere’s 2024 Season Is Over

The southern hemisphere's 2024 season has ended a little earlier than expected with the final two centres that had planned to open for a final weekend, this weekend, deciding not to do so.
The only two centres still operating had been Whakapapa and Turoa ski areas on Mt Ruapehu on New Zealand's North Island. Whakapapa had been operating daily, Turoa Fridays to Sundays in the final weeks of the season. The two centres had operated as one resort until this season but are now run as separate businesses.

Japan’s (& Asia’s) 24-25 Season Underway

Japan's 24-25 season has got started today.
For the 26th successive season the small Yeti ski area in the shadow on Mt Fuji created a ski run using an all-weather snowmaking machine. Those who arrived in fancy dress received free lift passes, leading to a colourful display.

It's white but not (yet) deep; a cold covering for Vail, Colorado, USA.
First US ski area opens, with several additions in The Alps from last week. Snow has fallen on yet-to-open resorts in The Rockies and The Pyrenees. The southern hemisphere season finally ends this weekend.

Tignes To Open With €30 Lift Passes

The start of France's 24-25 season is just a month away with the Chamonix Valley, Tignes and Val Thorens currently expected to be opening first for the final week of November.
Tignes has officially given up on September and October opening but has announced plans for its opening weekend from 23rd of November.

Cardrona to add 150ha to ski area for winter 2025

Cardona Ski Resort in New Zealand has released plans to add an extra 150 hectares of new terrain in 2025.
A new 6-seater detachable Doppelmayr chairlift will be installed in Soho Basin over the southern hemisphere summer, ready to open for winter in June 2025.

More Snowmaking For The Milky Way

The huge Milky Way ski area, which straddles the French-Italian border, has announced a snowmaking spend amongst other upgrades ahead of the 24-25 season.
Marketed under its Italian name, Vialattea, the region has added an 8.9km extension to its snowmaking coverage in the Alpette – Borgata and Lower Banchetta Sectors, aiming to ensure cover to lower altitudes. The new machines enable faster snow production while reducing energy consumption. The initiative supports Vialattea's commitment to sustainability, already demonstrated by its use of 100% renewable energy, which cuts CO2 emissions by around 2,900 tonnes annually.

US Ski Season Starting Tomorrow

After an unseasonably warm October until late last week, cold temperatures and snowfall has arrived in the Rockies and with its announcement that it plans to open tomorrow, Wolf Creek Ski Area looks like it will be the first in the country, and the North American continent, to open for the 24-25 season (unless anywhere else manages to sneak in and open before them).

US Resorts Fire Up Snowmaking As Temperatures Drop

US ski areas have been firing up their snowmaking systems as temperatures finally drop across large parts of the country following an unseasonably warm October.
High altitude ski areas in Colorado including Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Loveland have also posted images of snowmaking underway and there's also been up to 10" of natural snowfall reported, with more forecast for tomorrow, Monday. Telluride is pictured below on Saturday. Some ski tourers have already made some turns at resorts like Silverton.

Sweden Latest European Nation to Open For 24-25 Season

Sweden has become the sixth European ski nation to see one of its resorts begin its 24-25 season.
Kåbdalis, in the north of the country, has open one wide, mile-long run, using snow stored through summer having been stockpiled from last winter, then spread back out on the slopes in the process known as snowfarming.

More Pre-season Snowfall in the Pyrenees

There have been pre-season snowfalls in the Pyrenees over the past 24 hours as conditions have turned more wintery there, five-weeks before the hoped-for season start date in the region.
For many ski centres this is the second snowfall in the past few weeks, following lighter accumulations earlier this month.

Avoriaz Sets Visitor Record Again Without Adding Beds

French ski resorts are battling to do the most in terms of their environmental efforts, with each of the country's big ski areas reporting on their efforts to battle climate change in a myriad of different ways.
Among the initiatives by Avoriaz in the Portes du Soleil is a decision made back in 2015 not to build any more accommodation but use what they have more efficiently.

First Accumulating Snowfall in USA

Ski areas in upstate New York have reported the first accumulating snow in the US of the autumn/fall.
Whiteface Mountain posted images of snow lying several inches deep at the top of their gondola, along with a dusting at lower levels mixing with fall colours in the trees.

Serre Chevalier Creates High Altitude Beginner Area

Serre Chevalier in the Southern French Alps has been moving its beginner slopes up to the top of the mountain as part of its climate change adaptation strategy which a resort spokesperson says,

Pope Meets Austrian Ski Representatives Ahead of World Ski Championships

Members of the Austrian Ski Association met Pope Francis at The Vatican on Thursday ahead of Saalbach Hinterglemm hosting the the FIS World Alpine Ski Championships this winter, from 4 to 16 February, 2025.
The meeting is reported to have taken place in The Sala del Concistoro (Hall of the Consistory), a large hall on the third loggia of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican City.

The Sk’e-Bike

Although the Ski bike – a bike with skis instead of wheels – has been with us a long time in various forms - the sk'e-bike is a new twist on the concept.
Offered by company called AvélO at the French ski resort of Peisey-Vallandry, located next to Les Arcs and sharing the vast Paradiski area with it and La Plagne, it offers a combination of the two disciplines of e-biking and ski touring.

EU’s New Visa Entry System Delayed Again

The European Union's plans to introducing a fingerprint and facial scan check for non-EU citizens arriving at all EU borders is to be delayed again, with no new date yet given.
The programme, known as EES, was due to be rolled out on 10 November, but has been delayed once more after Germany, France and the Netherlands all said their systems were not ready.

More ski areas are now open in the northern hemisphere than the southern, with ten (mostly glacier-based) options available in the European Alps. Cooler weather and snow at altitude in the forecasts.

Swiss Centre Reborn

The southerly Swiss ski centre of San Bernardino has begun operating again after more than a decade out of action.
The re-opening of the ski resort is thanks to investor Stefano Artioli who reportedly plans to invest CHF300 million ($360 million) under the business name San Bernardino Swiss Alps, working with the local the Moesano Tourist Board and the Municipality of Mesocco.

More Heavy Early Autumn Snowfall in the Alps

Ski areas in the Alps are reporting another round of heavy snowfall in the last 24 hours, with some reporting as much as 50cm of fresh snowfall in the past 24 hours.
It's the second significant snowfall on high slopes in the past three weeks, with smaller accumulations reported in between.

Finland's Levi & Ruka Begin 7 Month Seasons

Finland's Levi and Ruka ski resorts have started their seven month long '24-'25 seasons, becoming the first centres outside the Alps in the northern hemisphere to open for skiing and snowboarding.
Both have opening weekend festivals underway that will include the use of about 2km of slopes each, plus terrain park features, new season gear tests and plenty of festivities. Both centres also create cross country trails using the same technique of storing large volumes of last season's snow through the summer then spreading it back out on the cooling landscape.

A Fourth Vail Base

Vail in Colorado has been one of the world's most successful resorts over the past 40 years, spawning an empire that now owns or operates nearly 50 ski centres on three continents.
Now the resort where it all began has grown so much that the Town of Vail, the Vail Resorts company and developers East West Partners have announced a joint plan to build a fourth base village at Vail Mountain.

New Chairlift For Le Grand Bornand

Le Grand Bornand in the Aravis Region of the French Alps has invested €6m in upgrading its 42-year old Duche triple chairlift.
The lift enables the return of skiers from the wild and grandiose valley of Annes, at the foot of Pointe Percée, towards the Grand-Bornand Chinaillon station via the long Maroly slopes.
