Survey Asks "Which Is The Best Chairlift Seat?"

A new survey of 1,000 skiers from online ski instructor booking platform Maison Sport asked which is their favourite seat on a chairlift?

The survey found that on a quad chairlift, the coveted outside seat (furthest from the pylon) earned the top spot (50% of votes), praised for its scenic view and ease of getting out of the way of other skiers when you get off the lift.

LAAX’s On-Demand Gondola Network Expands for 24-24 Season

Two new sections of the remarkable new FlemExpress lift are due to start operating at the Swiss resort of LAAX this winter.

Originally conceived almost two decades ago and requiring 15 years of planning, construction of the new lift, which will ultimately have five sections when its completed next year, began in June 2022 with the first sections opening last winter.

Whistler’s Latest Lift Upgrade

Whistler's Jersey Cream Express is being upgraded from a quad chairlift to a 6-seater in time for North America's largest resort's opening day in less than two months' time.

Construction is reported to be in the final stages with completion targeted in time for Opening Day on November 22, 2024.

New Lift Celebrates French – Italian Ski Connection

British Skiers Warned To Be Aware of New EU Entry-Exit System (EES)

British skiers have been advised to be aware of new EU Border checks that are likely to cause additional delays.

The EU and other countries in the Schengen free travel area are due to start rolling out increased border checks from November, just as the ski season gets started.

More French Ski Resorts Switch To Bio-Fuelled Groomers

More French ski areas will switch their piste bashers to operate on biofuel this winter.

Peyragudes in the Pyrenees is one of those announcing the switch to further reduce its carbon footprint with SEMVAL, the company operating the Valmeinier ski area in the French Alps making the same announcement.

Méribel’s Ongoing Snow Front Upgrade

Méribel Centre is continuing its work to improve its Snow Front area to make it easier to navigate with improved facilities for the upcoming 24/25 winter season.

US Weather Service Predicts Winter Snow Conditions

New Lift “Most Significant in French Alps for 10 Years”

The new Jandri Express cable car, the backbone of Les 2 Alpes, is "the most significant project in the French Alps in the last 10 years," a resort spokesperson has claimed, adding, "It stands out for its technical prowess, its excellent customer experience, and the fast and easy access it gives to guaranteed snow."

Transarc lift in Les Arcs 1800 to reopen

The final phase of the Transarc upgrade in Les Arcs 1800 will be completed for this winter.

The new Transarc will have 138 cabins, compared with 92 previously. They will be more spacious 10-seat gondolas, improving passenger comfort and use less electricity than the previous lift.

Austrian Glacier Starting Season On Friday After Heavy Snowfall

The heavy snowfall in the Alps, which appears to have been particularly intense over Austria, has led to the Stubai Glacier announcing it plans to start its 24-25 season this coming Friday, September 20th.[/b]

Although Austrian glaciers opened in early-mid September until a few years ago, the rapid advance of climate change has led most to postpone their planned start dates to October, or the final weekend of September and the Stubai had not been expected to open for 3 or 4 weeks, but it reports that it has received 50cm of fresh snowfall, hence the decision.

Crowdfunding Helps Finance New Gondola

A new gondola with 10-person cabins will go into service at Austria's Fieberbrunn ski area this winter.

Unusually, crowdfunding was used to part-finance the new lift, capitalising on the 'emotional attachment' skiers have to the famous red cabins of the former lifts. Over 200 people decided to contribute raising around € 600,000 towards construction costs.

Final Spins for Perisher Chairlift Before 2025 Upgrade

One of the very few lifts still operating for the 2024 Australian ski season has made its final ever spins today.

The Mt. Perisher Triple Chair's final days were marked with a retro style this weekend at Australia's largest resort, which as of Monday will be the only centre still open in the country after all others closed earlier than hoped due to warm weather.

More September Snowfall High in the Alps and Dolomites

There's been further snowfall in the past 24 hours on high slopes in the Alps, following similar mostly light but wet snow accumulations above about 2,500m altitudes to snowfalls reported on high slopes last Thursday.

Whilst most snowfalls at the end of last week appeared to be particularly from the western Alps, the latest falls have seen some of the first falls on high slopes on the Dolomites and more southerly and easterly locations.

Intensified Troll Experience in Sweden

More Australian Centres Ending Seasons Early

Charlotte Pass, Falls Creek and Thredbo have joined the list of Australian ski centres ending their seasons early due to warm weather and a declining snowpack.

Falls Creek will close on Friday, 13th, September; Charlotte Pass, which is home to the country's highest slopes and Thredbo a week today on the 15th. They join other Aussie areas already closed early including Mt Buller, Hotham, and Selwyn Resort.

First Snow On High Slopes in the Alps

Ski areas in the Alps have taken to social media this afternoon to post pictures of what, for most, are the first snowfalls of the autumn on their high peaks.

The snowfall is part of a major storm system currently impacting the western Alps and unfortunately, whilst the snow above 3,000m is great to see, valleys are again seeing extreme weather issues with road closures due to flooding.

Salomon Claim New Helmet World’s First Fully Recyclable

Salomon say that their new Brigade Index ski and snowboard helmet (RRP £110) is the first on the market created to be fully recyclable.

The new helmet is itself made with at least 96% of materials from the same origin.

"It can be fully recycled once you're done using it, but there no compromise on safety or style," a Salomon spokesperson said, adding, "A little reflection goes a long way - nothing is lost, and plenty can be gained."

Val d’Isère’s New Glacier Gondola

A new gondola will be in service this winter up to the snow sure slopes of the Pisaillas Glacier, high above Val d'Isère this winter 24-25.

The new lift is the third on the route, which began with a drag lift in 1972 and for the past 38 years has been served by a six-seat gondola.

Three Weeks of Festivals in Mayrhofen

The Austrian Tirol's Mayrhofen is set to run three successive weeks of festivals to round off its 24-25 season next spring.

The long time British favourite will first stage the Altitude Comedy Festival in late March, followed by the British Snowboard & Freeski Championships and then it's straight on to the perennial festival favourite, Snowbombing.

Les Arcs’ New TransArc Lift This Winter

One of the key lifts from Les Arcs, the TransArc, has been upgraded over the past year with the shiny new version available for the coming winter, which kicks off on December 15th.

The new lift linking Arc 1800 with the mountain tops will be able to carry more passengers up in a shorter time but still manage to use less electricity than its predecessor, in keeping with the resort's strong environmental priorities.
