Warner-Bros DiscoveryPlus, which offers live coverage of all Alpine ski races and many other winters ports and other sports, having taken over multiple smaller operators in recent years, has contacted its subscribers on a 1p under £7 monthly plan and told them that they now need to switch to a 1p under £31 monthly plan to continue watching, a nearly 4.5 times increase.

Up To 2 Feet Of Snowfall in 24 Hours in the Alps

A number of ski areas in the Western Alps have posted up to 60cm (2 feet) of snowfall on their higher slopes in the last 24 hours. Chamonix and La Rosiere have both posted this amount with Flaine reporting 55cm so far.
The fresh snowfall is the heaviest so far since conditions changed at the end of last week, ending a fortnight of mostly dry weather. Les Arcs has now reached a 3 metre (10 feet) base on its higher slopes following a reported 47cm accumulation in the last 24 hours there, and 74cm since the weekend. Only Chamonix is reporting more snowfall (80cm in 72 hours) and deeper snow at 3.9 metres (13 feet) – but that's at the Pic du Midi at the top of the Vallee Blanche descent.

Scottish Centres Re-Open Slopes With Snow from Storm Éowyn

Scottish ski centres are opening some terrain using natural snow cover for the first time in a fortnight after several days of wild weather from Storm Éowyn left enough snowfall for some.
It's a mixed picture though with other centres saying the storm did not deliver enough snow, or that it did but the snow was blown off their slopes by the violent gales that accompanied it falling.

Snowfall Returns To The Alps

Fresh snowfall has been reported in the western Alps over the last 24 hours, marking a return to fresh snow conditions for the first time in nearly a fortnight for many areas.
Ski areas in France and Italy have reported up to a foot (30cm) of snowfall in the past 24 hours with snowfall expected to continue through Thursday.

The Melanoma Fund, a UK charity dedicated to providing sun safety guidance for outdoor sports lovers, has announced a partnership with Solex SPF30 – a new sunscreen.
Michelle Baker, the charity's CEO, said:
"It's easy to underestimate the importance of skin protection on snow. You only have to look at the weathered faces of older ski instructors to see the effects of intensified UV exposure - not to mention the increased risk of skin cancers.

World’s Next Largest Indoor Snow Centre Nears Completion

The world's next new biggest indoor snow centre, the first to claim more than 100,000 square metres (25 acres) of indoor snow area, is rapidly moving towards completion.
Huafa Ice and Snow World is being built in Shenzhen in southeastern China, a modern metropolis that links Hong Kong to China's mainland.

Brit Brookes Wins Laax World Cup Day Before 18th Birthday

British teenager Mia Brookes secured her third win of the 2024/25 FIS Snowboard World Cup season in style at the Laax Open in Switzerland on Saturday.
Seventeen-year-old Brookes, who turns 18 today, topped the women's final with a score of 84.86, while New Zealand's Zoi Sadowski Synnott came in second with 77.29 points. Japan's Kokomo Murase finished third with 71.15 points. Two-time Olympic big air champion Anna Gasser from Austria placed fourth, followed by Reira Iwabuchi from Japan in fifth place.

British team selected for Alpine World Championships in Saalbach, Austria

GB Snowsport have confirmed the selection of fourteen athletes for the British Alpine World Championships squad for the competitions in Saalbach, Austria, next month.
The eight male and six female athletes selected include the full British Men's Slalom World Cup team of Dave Ryding, Billy Major, and Laurie Taylor, alongside fellow World Cup level athletes in Roy Steudle, Victoria Palla and Reece Bell. Owen Vinter, Calum Langmuir, Giselle Gorringe, Lois Jackson, Dominic Shackleton, Molly Butler, Abi Bruce and Jack Irving make up the remainder of the initial selections list.

95th Lauberhorn Ready To Race

The 95th staging of the International Lauberhorn Races take place at Wengen in the Swiss Jungfrau ski region over the coming weekend.
First held in 1930, the Lauberhorn downhill course is the longest in the world, stretching 4.48 km (2.78 miles) and taking skiers about two and a half minutes to complete. Sunday will feature slalom races on the Männlichen course.

80-Year-Old Tries Skiing For First Time

An 80-year-old care home resident in the West Midlands has had the chance to ski down a snow slope for the first time and later expressed her delight at the experience.
Former nurse Margaret Syms, a resident at Chandler Court care home in Bromsgrove said she had always wanted to try skiing but had never had the chance. The care home's team then asked for charity Disability Snowsport UK's help to make it happen at the nearby Tamworth Snowdome.

Football World Cup on Ice and Snow in Arosa

Switzerland's Arosa will play host to the 13th IceSnowFootball tournament which will see soccer stars from all over the world competing for the World Cup title.
Taking place on the 15th and 16th January next week, teams from Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands and an international all-star team will compete in what's billed as the unofficial Snow Soccer World Cup.

British Bobsleigh Team win gold in Germany

The British four-man bobsleigh team have secured their first World Cup gold for two years at Winterberg in Germany.
After the disappointment of their sixth place finish at the Beijing Winter Olympics, the team of Brad Hall, Taylor Lawrence, Arran Gulliver and Greg Cackett became the first non-German team to win in Winterberg since 2012.

Europe’s Most Southerly Centre Battles Low Snowfall Winter

Europe's most southerly major ski area, Spain's Sierra Nevada, located above the ancient city of Granada and the Mediterranean sea, has had a challenging start to its 24-25 season.
Despite having the country's highest slopes, it's had very little snowfall so far this winter and could only open about 10% of its runs for the key Christmas and New Year period, having already missed another key Spanish holiday week at the start of December.

Fresh Snowfall in the Alps

A 10 day period of mostly dry weather in the Alps has ended with some significant fresh snowfall reported this morning and more expected through the weekend.
Les Arcs, pictured top, has reported 25cm (10") of fresh snowfall this morning. Les Menuires in the 3 Valleys has reported the biggest total so far of 60cm (24") over 72 hours.

Book Your Lift Ride to Alpe d’Huez Summit

The ascent to the top of the slopes at Alpe d'Huez at 3,330m has become ever more popular. The Pic Blanc is the starting point of a number of classic ski runs, including the world's longest black, the famous Sarenne.
Although you can get lucky and arrive at the base of the fast Pic Blanc cable-car to the top and find no queues, more often it will be a wait to board the cable car, which has led Alpe d'Huez to introduce the chance to book your ascent on the lift in advance with a service they've called 'Direct To The Peak'.
