Japan Topping World Snow Depth Tables For Start of 2025

Japanese ski areas have leapfrogged North American and European ski resorts to move to the top of the world snow depth tables.
North American ski areas had been the first to post 2m+ depths a month ago after heavy snowfall in the Pacific Northwest corner of the continent credited to the La Nina weather system in the Pacific.

Ski Patrol Strike At Park City Mountain

America's largest ski area, Utah's Park City Mountain, is not having the best start to its 24-25 season.
With limited snowfall in the autumn it currently has less than 15% of its terrain open, reporting 51 of its 350 trails available yesterday, although it did also get a foot of snowfall. But now in a move relatively unprecedented in the USA, its ski patrol has begun an indefinite strike.

Huge Snowfall In the Alps Exceeds Expectations

Huge snowfalls in the Alps over the last 24 hours have delivered up a metre of fresh snow since Sunday.
Ski areas in the Western Alps have seen the biggest falls, but the snow has been widespread with big accumulations further East in Austria too.

Rain And Gales Close Hereford Christmas Chairlift

A storm, which unusually has not been given a name, has closed a special Christmas attraction in the English town of Hereford.
The town's 'Alpine Ski-lift experience' gave visitors the chance to sit on a chairlift with skis propped next to you and in some cases be sprayed with artificial snow with images available for social media posts,

Breckenridge Reclaims Shot Ski World Record

The famous Colorado ski town of Breckenridge has taken back the world record for the most people simultaneously drinking from a line of shot skis only two months after Utah's Park City took the record from them.
The two famous ski towns have been breaking each other's records for almost a decade now.

Snow Dumping in the Alps

A big snowfall is underway in the Alps with up to 40cm (16") of snowfall reported since last night after a day of rain up as high as 2,000m altitudes on Thursday.[/b]
Temperatures started to plummet by as much as 15C to well below freezing late yesterday and the rain turned to blizzard conditions in many areas last night.

Mountains at Andermatt, Switzerland, ahead of the snow arriving tonight.
Merry Xmas from J2Ski! If you asked Santa for snow, it looks as if he's delivering early... there were big snowfalls in North America last weekend, and cold and snow is rolling into the Alps as we write this. There's a lot more in the forecast, for Europe, America and Japan too, for the holiday season.

A Metre of Snowfall By Christmas For The Alps

After a few days which have seen temperatures hit +10C in parts of the Alps, the mercury is plummeting again and heavy snowfall has arrived or is expected over the next 24-36 hours. Then after a dry Saturday for many, a second front will bring a multi-day snow-storm which will last up to Christmas Eve for some resorts.

Lindsey Vonn Expected To Race Again In World Cup At St Moritz This Weekend

One of the most successful ski racers of all time, America's Lindsey Vonn, is expected to return to World Cup ski racing this coming weekend when two super-G events are staged at St. Moritz. She has previously won the same races five times.
Now 40 years old, Vonn is placed third for World Cup wins on the all-time list, with 82 wins, just behind Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark on 86. Fellow American racer Mikaela Shiffrin has 99 wins, having passed Vonn since the latter's retirement.

The World’s Largest Snow Maze opens in Poland

'Snowlandia' - the world's largest snow maze - has opened for the winter in the Polish ski resort of Zakopane.
The maze is constructed from nearly 60,000 compacted snow blocks, with walls up to 2m high. It covers over 3,000 m².
Snowdonia claim that the labyrinth is designed with such complexity that it can take up to an hour to find their way out.

Up to 4 Feet Of Fresh Snowfall For North America's West Coast

There have been some huge snowfalls over the weekend right up North America's West Coast.
Ski areas in California appear to have done especially well, posting 36 hour accumulations of up to 48" (four feet/1.2 metres).
The snowfall caused some logistical issues with access roads temporaily blocked and lifts closed, in part due to low visibility with gale force winds bringing blizzard conditions at times.

World`s Steepest Cable Car Officially Open

The world's steepest cable car up to Mürren in the Swiss Jungfrau region has officially opened.
The new direct connection between Stechelberg and Mürren was officially opened with a VIP ceremony attended by 600 guests that also saw the first section of Switzerland's first Funifor cable car between Mürren and Birg will go into operation.

Ischgl Building World-Record LEGO Gondola

After the success of their collaboration with toy brand LEGO last winter, Austria's Ischgl is stepping up the partnership for 24-25.[/b]
Among other things, visitors can look forward to the highlight of a world record building project on the Pardatschgrat, a charity campaign, interactive building activities in the Silvretta Therme and LEGO-themed experiences for the whole family in ski school.

Scotland’s 24-25 Ski Season Underway

Cold weather following fresh snowfall delivered by the northern end of Storm Darragh at the weekend has led to Scottish ski areas to announced early openings this week and two mote considering following suit.
The Lecht announced first that it will open this weekend, then Glencoe decided to open from today.

Ski Areas Race to Open in The Pyrenees

Ski resorts in the Pyrenees are scrambling to open as much terrain as they can as fast as they can following big snowfalls over the past few days.
Ski centres in the region had hoped to start opening more than a fortnight ago but dry weather conditions and temperatures too warm for snow making prevented that until now. That unfortunately meant Spanish areas missing key public holidays at the start of this month.

72 Hour Snowfall Accumulations Hit 75cm in the Alps

The weekend snow storms across the Alps have started to add up to some significant number, heaviest in the west.
Accumulations of around 75cm on high slopes over three days from Friday to Sunday were reported by a number of French resorts including Val d'Isere and Val Thorens.

Over 100 ski areas have now opened in Austria including most of the country's larger centres. And whilst this weekend has seen the 3 Valleys open its sectors, plus connections between Tignes and Val d'Isere link up for 24-25, and other giant areas like Italy's Via Lattea (Milky Way) open, joining other big areas like the 4 Valleys, it's in Austria where the main battle seems to be to open the most terrain as quickly as possible.

Initially 5-20cm accumulations are expected in the northern Alps, today, Friday, then heavier and more widespread snowfall is expected from Sunday.

The UK's largest ski holiday company, Crystal, has released details of how the market is shaping up this season so far.
The company says that they've got the most bookings of the season for December so far this year, with sales for holidays departing later this month up 10% on 2023.

Bulgarian Ski Area Opening Early After Bumper Snowfall

Bansko in Bulgaria looks set to open a week earlier than planned thanks to big snowfalls in the Southern European nation over the past week.
Bansko reported around 50cm of snowfall and other Bulgarian ski areas have been reporting similar accumulations. Pamporovo posted the image above yesterday.

Scottish Dry Slope Saved From Closure

Polmonthill Snowsports Centre, a dry ski centre established more than 50 years ago, which had been earmarked for closure more than a year ago, has been taken over by the local community.
Local community volunteers have formed a charity, the Polmonthill Community Snowsports Centre, to run the slope with a short-term lease from Falkirk Council while they await the result of a Community Asset Transfer application, the decision on which is expected next year.

Resorts in the Alps Battle To Open Most Terrain

A marketing battle is underway between ski areas in the Alps to see which can claim the most open terrain at the start of the season.
Recently opened Ischgl-Samnaun on the Austrian-Swiss border is the first to post over 100km of slopes open this winter, overtaking Solden, which had held the top spot for weeks, now up to 80km of runs. Ischgl/Samnaun is currently at 110km.
