Cairngorm Funicular Reopening Today

The troubled funicular railway at Cairngorm Mountain resort is set to return to service from 9am today after its latest closure of nearly two years. In fact it has operated for only 7 months in the past six years.

Scotland's only funicular railway has been out of action since August 2023, while an extensive programme of remediation works has been carried out, led by contractor Balfour Beatty on behalf of the public body Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) which controls the ski area.

Work On New Australian Ski Centre About To Begin

Construction of a new indoor snow centre for Australia, which looks set to be one of the world's largest, is about to begin, according to a January report in Sydney's edition of Time Out.

Winter Sports World was first announced in 2018 when it had a $200m AUD price tag, seven years later, having overcome the various planning and other practical issues and with its price tag having risen to $700m AUD according to the Time Out report, work to actually build it is due to get underway, with a target opening year of 2028.

Mikaela Shiffrin Wins 100th World Cup Race

The most successful ski racer of all time, America's Mikaela Shiffrin, has become the first person to record 100 Alpine Skiing World Cup wins.

Shiffrin won the slalom in Sestriere, Italy, today having returned to racing a few weeks ago after a two-month mid-season break due to an injury sustained racing in Killington, Vermont in December.

World's Deepest Snow Reaches 7 Metres / 23 Feet

A ski area in Japan is posting a 7 metre plus snow depth after more heavy snowfall in the country this week.

Tengendai Kogen Ski Area in Yonezawa City in the Yamagata prefecture is currently posting a 710cm base on its upper slopes, following more than 50cm of snowfall over the past few days and more than three metres (10 feet) in February so far.

Norwegian Ski Area Adds 70 Electric Car Charging Points

Caving Under Morzine's Snowy Mountains

Huge Snowfalls in California

A major storm system has dumped over a metre of snowfall in 36 hours on Californian ski slopes.

Ski areas around the Lake Tahoe region and down as far south as Mammoth Mountain are celebrating what has been the biggest storm of the season to date.

Survey Finds 50% Of Skiers Say They’ll Go Skiing Whatever The Cost

A new survey carried out on behalf of travel debit card provider Currensea has tried to find out about skier attitude to their holiday cost.

The research asked 2,000 UK adults "weighted to be nationally representative" about their attitudes, but only 141 (7%) of respondents said they had been on a ski or snowboarding trip in the last five years or were planning one in the next 12 months.

Freddy Carrick-Smith wins GB’s first ever Alpine EYOF Gold

17-year-old British slalom racer Freddy Carrick-Smith delivered a stunning performance at the opening Alpine race of the 2025 European Youth Olympic Festival earlier this week taking Gold in the Boys' Giant Slalom.

Carrick-Smith's gold was the first ever EYOF Alpine medal for a British skier, following on from Freddy's twin brother Zak's achievements in winning Britain's first medals at an Olympic Alpine event in Gangwon at the Youth Olympic Winter Games last year.

Man Rides 101 Different Ski Lifts in A Day

Skier Oliver Kern has set a new world record by riding 101 different ski lifts in a single day.

Kern, who runs the website skiResort.info and already holds multiple skiing world records, chose the resort of Sälen in Sweden, which runs 104 lifts across four of its ski areas, for his record attempt on Tuesday. Sälen also has more than 12 hours of operating from 7.30 am to approximately 7 pm giving the maximum time to ski all the lifts …with some careful planning.

New research suggests increase in interest in train travel to ski resorts

Research carried out by ski company Iglu Ski into the popularity of train travel has revealed the number of skiers interested in getting the train to the Alps increased by 35% from January 2020 to January 2024.

Invictus Winter Games Underway

The Invictus Games 2025, the first to include a winter sports element, are underway in Canada.

Running to February 16, 2025 the 2025 Games are being staged in Vancouver and Whistler Blackcomb and have brought together around 550 competitors who are wounded, injured and sick military service personnel, both serving and veterans, from 25 nations, competing in adaptive sports.

Japanese Ski Resort posts 6 Metre Plus Base

A ski resort in Japan has posted a 610cm (20 feet plus) base depth on its upper slopes, the world's deepest reported base for several years.

Japan's ski area have been reporting epic snowfalls for the past few months, peaking in recent weeks with some ski areas posting 1 metre accumulations in 24 hours.

18-year-old snowboarder Mia Brookes from Sandbach in Cheshire has won the big air Crystal Globe for the second time in succession.

Mia, who only turned 18 on 19th January, was presented with her second consecutive big air Crystal Globe at yesterday's competition in Aspen, Colorado, despite not competing there.

Inghams’ Project Flight Free

Leading ski holiday company Inghams, which started operating 91 years ago with Walter Ingham offering ski holiday by rail, is going back to its roots as part of an ambitious effort to cut its CO2 impact.

The company has just published it First Impact Report which has seen it cut its emissions intensity reduction by 16% since baseline and achieve a 12% year on year decrease in its absolute emissions.

World Record attempt at 100 ski lifts in a single day

[b]A new world record attempt is planned for 11 February at the Sälen ski resort in Sweden when Oliver Kern hopes to set a new record for the most lift rides in a single day.

Kern scored his first world records back in 2007. On 8th December 2007, he skied 52 different ski lifts in one day in the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental. In February 2008, this record was beaten with 60 different ski lifts.

Canadian and US Resorts Pitch To Skiers

Ski areas on both side of the US/Canadian border have been positioning themselves in light of the (now delayed) imposition of tariffs on Canada by the US.[/b]

Canadian ski areas and wider travel industry have been stressing the need to ski locally and keep Canadian dollars in Canada in a bit to try to support the country's economy.

New Chairlift at Perisher due to open for 2025 season

With just over 120 days until the Southern Hemisphere season starts in Perisher, Australia, progress on the new Mt Perisher chairlift is going well.

The upgraded lift will improve resort capacity and help spread skiers across Perisher's 48 lifts to reduce general lift wait times and improve flow and circulation.

Landslide blocks Tarentaise valley creating 16 mile traffic jam

A rockfall and landslide yesterday (Saturday 01 February) blocked the main road into Moutiers and the Tarentaise affecting 10,000 vehicles and causing a 16 mile tailback.

The incident occurred around 10:45am on the RN90, near the exit to 'Moûtiers Nord'. One person in a car was slightly injured and taken to hospital by the emergency services.

Folkestone Dry Ski Slope Appears Saved from Closure

A dry ski slope at Folkestone in Kent on England's south coast appears to have been saved from closure, although full details of its rescue have not yet been disclosed.

The dry slope is part of the wider Folkestone Sports Centre, a popular leisure centre that shut unexpectedly last July after former operators Folkestone Sports Centre Trust ran into financial difficulties and administrators were called in.
