Blizzard in Aus

[b]Australia has been hit by heavy snowfall as the excellent season there continues. Up to 30cm (12") was reported over the last 234 hours with much more forecast through the weekend.

However the snowfall has arrived driven in on up to 200kph wind gusts giving blizzard conditions and leading to slope closures at some areas including Mt Buller, where the Summit Chairlift, pictured above, had to be dug out.

Saas-Fee has opened for summer skiing as Tignes closes, while southern hemisphere resorts—especially Mount Hutt—see growing terrain and base depths despite limited snowfall, with most areas now near full operation except parts of Argentina and New Zealand's North Island.

Christmas in July Celebrations at Southern Hemisphere Ski Areas

Ski areas in Australia, New Zealand, South America and Southern Africa are set to celebrate "Christmas in July" on Saturday, 25th July.

According to Wikipedia the phrase "Christmas in July" is thought to have originated from a girls' summer camp in North Carolina called Keystone Camp, which began celebrating Christmas in July in 1933. The camp's co-founder, Fannie Holt, wanted to bring some festive magic to the summer months. The celebration included traditional Christmas elements like decorating a tree, singing carols, exchanging gifts, and even a visit from Santa Claus. The concept gained further traction with the release of the 1940 movie "Christmas in July".

Prehistoric Ski Pair Unearthed in Norway’s Melting Glaciers

Archaeologists in Norway have uncovered a rare pair of prehistoric skis, shedding new light on Iron Age winter travel and climate adaptation. The second ski was found just five meters from the first, which was discovered seven years ago on Digervarden mountain. Radiocarbon dating places both skis at around 1,300 years old.

Australian Resort 100% Open After Over Half-A-Metre of Snowfall

After receiving 56cm (22") of snowfall over the past week, Falls Creek has announced that its famed International Poma lift is now open, allowing access to terrain only possible with peak snow conditions.

This opening makes Falls Creek the first resort in Australia's Victoria province to have 100% of its lifts and 100% of terrain open, five weeks into the 2025 season.

Extreme Dry Slope Tubing on Ski Jump

German ski resort Winterberg is giving adrenaline junkies the opportunity to slide down the dry slope on the steep landing slope of their Schanze ski jump riding on a tyre tube.

The activity has been christened "Slope Terror" and the resorts describes it as, "leisure adventure at its wildest form!"

Summer Snowfall in The Alps

Ski areas across the Alps have been reporting snowfalls of up to 20cm on their highest slopes over the last 24 hours.[/b]

Italy's Passo Stelvio, one of four glacier ski areas currently open in the Alps, reported 25cm (10") of fresh snowfall as temperatures dipped (webcam image below). There was also heavy snowfall and low visibility on high slopes at Tignes and the Hintertux glacier (pictured above).

Backstreet Boys to Launch Schladming’s 25-26 Ski Season

Schladming-Dachstein ski region is continuing its move towards bringing in international rock and pop stars for its season opening weekend, competing with fellow Austrian resort Ischgl.[/b]

The resort has announced that the world-famous Backstreet Boys will take to the stage at Schladming to start the season. The US boyband follow a three nights-of-gigs extravaganza last winter with Bryan Adams, Sting and Simply Red playing successive evenings in 2024, and Robbie Williams who played two nights in 2023

Treble Cone, New Zealand, now open for skiing...

It's been a promising start to winter in the southern hemisphere, whilst near the end of some summer ski seasons in the northern. Notably, ski areas in Chile and Australia are experiencing excellent conditions, while Argentina faces challenges due to a slow start to the snows.

Running Up Courchevel’s Ski Jump

What's billed as the world's toughest 400 metres race, The Red Bull 400, returns to Courchevel's Le Praz ski jump on Sunday, July 13th.

The race involves an average gradient of 36° but in reality getting progressively steeper, reaching 78° at the point where jumpers heading in the opposite direction would get airborne.
