Snowfall Raises Excitement Levels In The Alps

The first significant snowfall of the autumn is underway in the Alps with many ski areas seeing 5-20cm accumulations overnight. The snowfall is expected top continue on and off over the next 48 hours with slopes above 3,000m potentially seeing half-metre totals by Sunday.

This week sees significant pre-season snow in the Alps, the start of Sweden's ski season, and the imminent opening of several US ski resorts. Meanwhile, the southern hemisphere's ski season is concluding, with only one area remaining operational in New Zealand.

Maison Sport confirms new GB Snowsport sponsorship

The ski lesson booking platform Maison Sport has announced that it will be sponsoring the British Alpine Men's World Cup team this winter.

The collaboration will support slalom skiers Dave Ryding, Billy Major, Laurie Taylor as they prepare for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

Dolomiti Superski Announce €215m in 25/26 Upgrades

Italy's vast Dolomiti Superski has announced that its 130 member lift companies have spent a collective €215m on upgrades and improvements ahead of the 2025/26 winter season, the 51st for the region, where the first lifts and slopes are scheduled to open on Saturday, November 29.

North America's 25-26 Season Inches Closer To Launch

The first ski area(s) to open for the 25-26 ski season in North America may well be revealed in the next few days, as resorts battle to prepare their slopes.

It's been consistently cold on the high altitude slopes of the Colorado Rockies with temperatures well below freezing allowing snowmaking systems to fire up and in some cases work around the clock through the weekend.

The 2025–26 ski season is gathering pace in the Northern Hemisphere with 15 resorts now open across the Alps and Scandinavia — led by Austria's seven — while the Southern Hemisphere winds down to just four remaining areas and early snowfalls begin in Japan and North America.

London Snow Show Back At Olympia This Weekend After Two Decades

The London Snow Show returned to a revamped Olympia Exhibition Centre this weekend, 19 years after what was then the London Ski & Snowboard Show was last staged there in 2006.

Taking place on Saturday and Sunday October 18 and 19 the re-launched show under new ownership by the Mountain Trade Network, promises the usual mix of speakers, ski destinations and tour operator stands and plenty of après ski vibes to get everyone in the mood for the winter season.

Londoners try pond skimming at the ‘Icebreaker City Skim’

Potters Fields Park next to London Bridge was transformed into a snow slope last weekend for London's first-ever urban pond skim.

On Saturday 11 October, Londoners turned out to try pond skimming – most typically seen at the end of the season in ski resorts.

New World Record for most vertical skied in an indoor snow centre

[b]Skier and extreme athlete Oliver Kern set two new world records at the SnowWorld Bispingen indoor ski area last week.

With an impressive 20,319m of elevation gain, he set a new record of vertical skied in a single 24-hour period in an indoor ski area. He also broke the elevation gain record of 910m for a single hour.

Over Half of Glacier Ski Areas Open in the Alps in Austria

Of the dozen Alpine ski centres currently already open for skiing and boarding in the Alps, seven are in Austria, with Tirol home to five of them.

The season got underway in two more Austrian provinces at the weekend with Carinthia's Mölltal glacier (pictured above this weekend) and Salzburgerland's Kitzsteinhorn above Zell am See-Kaprun opening 3km and 10km of terrain respectively.

Tignes Launches Non-Skier Pass

Tignes is targeting winter visitors who don't plan to ski or snowboard with a new pass called MyTignes Wintercard.

The pass covers multiple activities and wellness facilities over seven consecutive days of stating in the famous ski resort but not skiing.

This week marks the transition from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere, with more ski areas now open in the north. Finland has begun its 25-26 season, while the last ski centres in Argentina and Australia have closed for the year.

Freddy Carrick-Smith to become youngest GB World Cup male ski racer in 40 years

Eighteen-year-old Freddy Carrick-Smith is about to make history by becoming the youngest GB male ski racer in the last 40 years to compete in a FIS World Cup Giant Slalom race.

Carrick-Smith will take compete in the GS in Sölden, Austria on Sunday 27 October in the traditional opener of the Alpine Skiing World Cup season.

Netflix is turning its lens toward alpine skiing with a brand-new documentary on Mikaela Shiffrin, one of the most decorated athletes in the history of the sport, with 101 World Cup wins to her name.

According to Ski Chrono, the streamer plans an intimate exploration of Shiffrin's life and career.

Skiers Want Value, Snow & Space, Survey Finds

UK skiers prioritise value for money and fewer crowds on the slopes, according to community ski resort review site Snomad's pre-season ski resort finder quiz.

The findings show that value for money remains top priority, with 54% of respondents prioritising this, followed by quiet slopes at 39% and the quality of skiing at 35% ranking second and third respectively.

Fresh Snowfall As Australia Approaches Final Weekend of 2025 Season

There's been fresh snowfall on Australian ski slopes over the past 24 hours as the ski areas that are still open in the country approach their final weekend of their 2025 seasons.

Mt Buller, Falls Creek, Mount Hotham, Perisher and Thredbo remain open but all are expected to close at the end of the ski day this coming Sunday 5th October.
