Folkestone Dry Ski Centre Enters Administration

The trust which runs Folkestone Ski Centre and other sports facilities in the town has appointed administrators after running into financial difficulties.

The Folkestone Sports Centre Trust was established four years ago to operate long established facilities including the ski slope, a swimming pool, fitness facilities, dance studios, ball courts and a high ropes course.

Over Half a Million Foreign Skiers Visited Japan Last Season

The Japan Tourism Agency says 546,000 skiers and boarders visited Japan from overseas in the 23-24 season as the country continues to see a rebound from its multi-season COVID-19 closure to international visitors.

The agency also put a value of 328,000 yen (£1,700) per person for each skier, giving an overall value of 179 Billion Yen or over £900 million to the Japanese economy from the incoming trade.

Deer Valley’s Vast Expansion Soft Opening This Winter

A vast expansion of Deer Valley resort's ski area will have a soft opening this winter, with the official full unveiling for winter 25/26 it has been announced.

Deer Valley, one of the ski areas next to the famous ski town and now 2034 Olympic hosts Park City, currently cover 2,026 acres, but the expansion will see its footprint nearly triple with a remarkable 3,700 new acres and no less than 16 new chairlifts!

Thredbo enjoys new snowstorm with 25cm of fresh snow

Thredbo Resort in NSW, Australia received 25cm of fresh snow on the weekend, taking the total snowfall for July to 111cm.

In addition, thanks to freezing overnight temperatures, the snow cannons have created additional snow.

Temperatures dropped as low as -9C earlier this week, allowing the resort to score its biggest snowmaking night of the season, pumping out 11,000 m3 of water.

Major Snow Storm Hitting New Zealand

New Zealand's ski areas are celebrating what's expected to be one of the biggest snowfalls of the season to date, with totals of over half-a-metre expected by Tuesday evening.

Cardrona (pictured above today) reports that it has had over 20cm of new snow already today, with more on the way overnight and tomorrow. Treble Cone has reported more than 30cm of new snow at the top of the six-seater chairlift, and it continues to fall there too.

Scandinavia’s Glacier Skiing Centres Closing for Summer 2024

The two Scandinavian glacier ski areas that have been open through the past few months have announced they're closing to the general public.

Norway's Fonna summer ski centre announced last week that it would end its 2024 season this coming Sunday, 28th July, but then decided yesterday it would actually close at the end of the ski day today, Saturday 27th July, blaming the unfavourable forecast for Sunday.

France and USA Confirmed as 2030 & 2034 Winter Olympic Hosts

The French Alps and Utah have been conformed as hosts of the next two Winter Olympics & Paralympics after Italy hosts the 2026 Games at an IOC meeting ahead of the start of the Paris 2024 Summer Games tomorrow.

The two bids had previously been confirmed as the most likely hosts so the IOC confirmation this week is something of a rubber stamp.

Oldest Dry Ski Slope in Wales Saved By Council Funding Injection

[b]The charitable trust which operates the oldest ski slope in Wales, among other sports and leisure attractions, has been saved by a £1.3m bail out by the local council.

Pontypool Ski Centre was established in 1974 and is celebrating its 50th birthday this year.

Major Spa Complex for 3 Valleys

Saint Martin de Belleville is set to unveil a state-of-the-art spa complex this winter.

La Bellevie Wellness Centre will feature indoor and outdoor pools, with waterfalls, sauna and jacuzzi.

With a new modern design, the centre is the result of a €17m investment.

Saint-Gervais Connects Railway Station with Ski Slopes

French ski resort Saint-Gervais will unveil its Valléen project this winter after several years in the making. The project is a 'soft mobility' initiative which ewill see a two-stage gondolas connect first between the railway station and the resort centre and then between the resort centre and the key on mountain ski slope hub of Bettex above.

Mammoth Upgrading Historic Chair 1

Mammoth Mountain in California ended its 23-24 season earlier than usual (in late May when it normally stays open into early summer, or last year, August), as it is replacing one of the key lifts providing access to the high terrain.[/b]

Currently known as 'Broadway Express', the lifts from the original base lodge was originally the resort's third lift, a T bar, installed in 1953. It became a double chair in 1955, the resort's first, then a high-speed quad in 1988. It cut ascent times to under 4 minutes and nearly tripled uplift capacity from 900 to 2,400 skiers per hour. The new lift increases capacity further to 3,200 skiers per hour and cuts ascent time by nearly another minute.

Biggest Snowfall of Year To Date in Australia

Australian ski areas are celebrating the biggest snowstorm of winter so far, as a major weather system moves up from the Antarctic, bringing snow and strong winds with it.

The quickly moving cold front is expected to bring the most significant snowfall of the year with up to 50cm of snow forecast to accumulate on the country's slopes by Monday morning.

La Plagne’s New Roche de Mio Gondola

La Plagne has reported work progressing well on its new Roche de Mio lift.

Following the construction of the new glaciers gondola lift over the past few years, La Plagne is now replacing its Roche de Mio gondola to improve passenger flow and comfort on a key route up to the top of the slopes, connecting with the glaciers lifts.

Val Thorens 24-25 Upgrades

Val Thorens is spending €16m on an upgrading of their Les 2 Lacs chairlift ahead of next winter.

The new lift will be a gondola, carrying 61 cabins, each of which will have 10 seats.

The lift, which is scheduled to open on the planned first day of the season, 23rd November, will be one of the fastest in the world to date, travelling at 7 metres per second.

Snow has begun falling again in Australia after more than a fortnight of dry weather.

The intense winter weather has brought blizzard-like conditions across the country's ski slopes and it's hoped the multi-day storm will deliver up to 50cm by the end of this week.

New Gondolas at Saalbach Ahead of World Championships

Saalbach Hinterglemm is believed to be working on a number of new lifts ahead of hosting the Alpine Skiing World Championships next February.

The famous Austrian resort typically installs at least one new high speed, high capacity chairlift or gondola each year, and now operates more of these lifts than almost any other ski resort on the planet.

Sale of Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin Being Looked Into

The Department of Justice, part of the US Federal Government, is reported to be looking at the planned purchase of Colorado's Arapahoe Basin ski area by the Alterra Mountain Company.

The department last looked at Arapahoe Basin when a deal to buy it nearly three decades ago when it ended up blocking Vail Resorts' planned purchase of it along with Breckenridge and Keystone as Vail Resorts were starting their rise to domination of the US ski industry. Vail got Breckenridge and Keystone but Arapahoe Basin was sold to a Canadian company which has since morphed into the business now planning to sell the resort to Alterra.

Famed Courchevel Cable Car Re-opening

Courchevel's iconic La Saulire cable car is set to reopen this winter following a €10M upgrade.

The lift's cabins will have a new panoramic design and more comfortable layout for the 130 passengers each can carry.

The lift will ascend at a fast 11 metres per second, giving a capacity of 1,500 skiers per hour.

Ski Train 24-25 Services Announced

The revamped ski train service between London and the French Alps will run again next winter and continue a little later into the season.

The former direct public service was cancelled before the pandemic, then replaced by a direct charter service. That too was cancelled but replaced by an indirect service, with a change in Lille, known as Eurostar Snow, last winter.

Perisher Opens All Four Of Its Sectors

A month into Australia's 2024 ski season, the country's resorts continue to struggle to open terrain.

Falls Creek is currently posting the most open runs in terms of terrain percentage open – at 40%, but larger Perisher has more runs open although its percentage of terrain open so far is a little lower. It's at about 24km of slopes, representing 30% or so of its runs. It's also just announced some runs are now open in all four of its sectors. At the other extreme Mt Buller has still only been able to open 5% of its runs.

Snow in South Africa

It might feel like winter in the UK, but it actually is winter in South Africa - and yesterday snow was falling in the Cape Town area.

This photo was taken at the Aquila Game Reserve, about two hours outside Cape Town.

Snow is less unusual in South Africa than you might think. Skiing is possible at the Afriski Mountain Resort in Lesotho is currently open and offering ski lessons, race practice and tobogganing.

Cables Cut On Old Jandri Express

Les 2 Alpes say that July 8th is the day that they'll cut the cables on the old Jandri Express ahead of the installation of the replacement of the resort's iconic lift in time for next winter.

The ski area has just completed what is now France's longest ski season, which ran, running for over 7 months straight, after Tignes, which had the country's longest season for many years, withdrew from its early autumn opening and continued to shorten its summer ski season.

Saas Fee Opening For 24 - 25 Season

Saas Fee is expected to open for summer skiing from this Monday, 8th July.

The resort, popular with ski teams for race training, has one of the largest glacier ski areas in the world, with about 20km (13 miles) of runs.

It will initially open from 7am to noon daily, then from 26th Auitumn stay open to 1pm but open half an hour later. At the end of September it will switch to 8am to 2pm as temperatures cool, then in October get close to its winter hours with 8.30am – 3pm operations.

Metro Alpin funicular updated in Saas Fee

Saas Fee has officially opened the new 'Metro Alpin, which runs from the Felskinn station at 2980m to the Mittelallalin station at 3456m on the Allalinhorn.

The original Metro Alpin, opened on 19 December 1984, after construction began on 01 September 1981. At the time it a pioneering achievement in mountain lift. With a 1447m tunnel, a height difference of 476 meters and access to the highest revolving restaurant in the world, the lift has transported hundreds of thousands of visitors over the last four decades.

Skiing The USA On The 4th of July 2024

Only one ski area is open in the US this 4th of July, Independence Day 2024, the lowest number for some years.

Timberline on Mt Hood in Oregon is expected to be the only centre open, it's lifts running from 7am to 2pm up on the Palmer snowfield, where there are a few miles of runs and a terrain park to enjoy.

Mürren To Unveil World’s Steepest Cable Car

Mürren is about to unveil its biggest hi-tec upgrade since the filming of Bond Movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service' there more than 55 years ago helped fund the completion of Piz Gloria, the world's first revolving mountain restaurant.

This time it's the upgrading of the main uplift that's going to be grabbing headlines next season with the Schilthornbahn 20XX coming to fruition after more than five years of planning and construction.
