World Overview
Fresh snowfall has been reported for the Andes as well as the mountains of Australia and New Zealand this week, where the 2025 season continues to gather pace. Virtually all ski areas in the southern hemisphere are open, although there remains a significant range in terrain open and how deep the snow is.
Some Argentinian resorts report just 5 cm to 10 cm/2 inches to 4 inches and a kilometre or two of slopes, while some resorts in Chile and New Zealand have 90% to 100% open and bases of over 1 m/3 feet. Most Australian resorts are also reporting a good start to their 2025 winter.
We're down to six ski areas still open in the northern hemisphere, with two French glacier summer ski areas and Japan's Gassan Glacier ending their 2025 runs. We should return to seven from Saturday, with Switzerland's Saas-Fee expected to open for summer skiing (and its 2025-26 season).
While it remains hot, temperatures have dropped in both Europe and North America following last week's very high temperatures. Fresh snow has been reported on high slopes in the Alps, and one glacier is open in Norway.
Southern Hemisphere
Australia
It's been another snowy week in Australia, with resorts reporting up to 30 cm/12 inches of new snow over the past four days. This has allowed more terrain to open and means conditions continue to exceed pre-season projections of a warm and dry winter, at least so far.
More areas are surpassing the 1 m/3 feet base mark and are nearing full slope availability, well-timed for the current busy school holiday period. Falls Creek and Thredbo have opened slightly more terrain than the country's largest ski area, Perisher, which reports about 50% of its terrain open.
Snowfall is expected to continue for the next day or two, potentially bringing a total of over 60 cm/24 inches, before skies clear at the weekend.
New Zealand
It's been one of the best weeks of the season so far for most ski areas in New Zealand, with several snowfalls, including a well-timed accumulation of 15 cm to 25 cm/6 inches to 10 inches on Thursday and Friday last week, just in time for the weekend.
Conditions are good on the South Island, with Mount Hutt posting the deepest base nearing 1.5 m/5 feet and nearing full operation. Coronet Peak is 100% open.
Cardrona has increased its open terrain and now reports it has the most on offer in New Zealand, although it is not yet fully open. Their new Soho Basin terrain opened last weekend.
It's been mostly sunny since the snowfall, with temperatures ranging from -5°C to +7°C/23°F to 45°F. Conditions are becoming more unsettled now, with snowfalls forecast to continue through the weekend.
Argentina
Argentina's ski resorts are still trailing their southern hemisphere counterparts regarding early-season snow totals, but a welcome boost arrived earlier this week. Between Sunday and Tuesday, fresh snowfall brought 30 cm to 60 cm/12 inches to 24 inches across most ski areas, providing a timely lift.
Snow depths and open terrain have steadily improved, with Las Leñas expanding from just a few kilometres of open terrain a week ago to 40% of its terrain now operational. Further south, Cerro Castor has roughly two-thirds of its slopes in operation, making it the first Argentine resort this season to surpass 50% terrain availability.
It's back to dry and sunny conditions now, expected to persist across most of the country through the weekend, except for the far south, which will see more wintry weather, including frequent snow showers and temperatures dipping to -10°C/14°F.
Chile
Clear, sunny weather has dominated much of Chile this week, bringing crisp blue skies to the mountains. However, overnight temperatures on the slopes have dipped as low as -10°C/14°F, with daytime highs remaining just above freezing.
Thanks to strong early-season snow accumulation, conditions across the country's ski resorts remain excellent.
The largest interconnected ski area in the Southern Hemisphere, linking La Parva, Valle Nevado, and El Colorado, is nearly fully operational, with about 120 km/75 miles of runs open between them. Portillo is reporting the country's deepest snow at nearly 1.5 m/5 feet, and Nevados de Chillan is also now fully open.
Lesotho
It's looking good at Afriski in Lesotho right now, with webcam and social media videos showing the main run complete and in good condition. Temperatures have dropped very low, down to -10°C/14°F overnight. Sunny weather is expected to continue for the coming week but will get warmer, ranging from -5°C to +5°C/23°F to 41°F.
Northern Hemisphere
The Alps
With Les 2 Alpes and Val d'Isère ending their summer glacier skiing, there's now just Tignes left open for skiing in France, and only for the next week.
Passo Stelvio continues to offer glacier skiing with a snow depth of 140 cm/55 inches, the deepest in the Alps at present.
The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, accessed from Cervinia and Zermatt, is also open, as is Hintertux, which has seen a significant drop in its reported snow depth to 85 cm/33 inches but still has the most terrain currently available, with 27 km/17 miles of slopes.
Saas Fee is expected to open this weekend for summer glacier skiing.
Over the past week, the freezing point has predominantly remained between 3,000 m and 4,000 m/9,842 feet and 13,123 feet, a drop from its late June peak at 5,200 m/17,060 feet. Sunshine has been prevalent, although the start of the week brought a further reduction in freezing levels, dropping by 1,000 m/3,281 feet.
Overnight temperatures have occasionally dipped below freezing, resulting in a fresh snow covering on glacier terrain, with up to 25 cm/10 inches of fresh snow above about 2,500 m/8,202 feet and frosts down to the valley floor.
Val d'Isère received fresh snow cover two days after its slopes closed for summer skiing, with Passo Stelvio reporting the deepest fresh snow of about 15 cm/6 inches.
Scandinavia
Norway's Galdhøpiggen glacier, with the region's highest-altitude slopes, is the sole operational ski area in the region at present.
Despite recent mild spells, temperatures have dropped back below freezing overnight, delivering fresh snowfall over the past few days and noticeably rejuvenating the snowpack with 40 cm/16 inches of fresh snow within the past week. All runs remain fully open, welcoming skiers daily until 3 p.m.
USA
Only two U.S. ski areas are still offering inbounds snow sports this July: Timberline's Palmer Snowfield on Mount Hood, Oregon, and Copper Mountain's hike-to terrain park in Colorado, which is open to the public Fridays through Sundays.
Timberline has announced plans to stay open until July 20th, conditions permitting. Currently, the resort is running two lifts, with terrain available daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
It's been another warm and mostly sunny week on the mountain, with temperatures ranging from around +5°C/41°F to the high teens Celsius by the time runs close in the afternoon. As a result, the snow base has shrunk by another third compared to last week's measurements, with little change in the forecast.
