It can hurt! Make sure you've got good body armour/protection!
We went out with some of our guests who had hired a couple of boards out this autumn and I have to say that it was great fun and you could apply similar techniques that you use for snowboarding. The boards that we were using had a large wheel at the front and back with two smaller "outrigger" wheels that prevented the rig from flipping over and also had a leashed handle attached to an hydraulic brake to help you control the speed. It was a lot easier to control once you had picked up a bit of speed though! I can't remember the make of these boards but I can find out if you're interested. This was over here in La Clusaz, but I know there are a number of mountain boarding clubs in the UK. There is one that meets regularly at White Horse Hill on the Ridgeway in Oxfordshire. Hope you don't get too many bruises, Dave |
In my experience it's not necessarily what you do on the slopes but the actions of others that convinced me to wear a helmet every time I now go out. I have seen too many novices going too fast and out of control on the pistes to take the chance.
I've always made my kids wear a helmet (being that much smaller they are much more at risk to head injuries from flying skis, poles and boards) and they are now old enough to insist that I follow suit, although I've had a bit of a problem getting one to fit my large 62cm head! Currently awaiting arrival of a new Giro nine-9 MX that I hope will do the job and will be £55 well spent. Fortunately current designs are light and comfortable enough to make them sensible alternative to the traditional woollen hats and other mountain headgear. A definite "thumbs-up" to helmets and the hundreds of lives they have already saved and thousands to come in the future! Don't hit the slopes without one this winter. |
We are offering 5 nights in our lovely catered chalet in La Clusaz for only £250pp!
This price includes, transfers, accommodation breakfasts, afternoon home-made cakes and 3 course evening meals with a choice of complimentary wine. La Clusaz is a superb resort and this time of year often offers the best snow - plus the slopes are lovely and quiet. Take a look at www.gravite.co.uk for more info or contact us direct. |
You can reserve your La Clusaz/Aravis ski pass at http://satelc.wp.karbon.no/index.jsp?c=23104. You pay for it in advance and then go to the fast track counter at the lift office when you get to the resort. Definitely worth doing in Feb to avoid the queues for passes on the first day and let you get out on the slopes as quickly as possible. HTH, Dave |
I wouldn't buy ski's if I was you.
It's far better to get friendly with one of the ski shops and see if you can get a good season rental deal. That way if you don't like them you can swap them in and try others, or just change them to the snow conditions. Otherwise you need about 3 different pairs that can cope well with ice, powder or slush. As you will encounter the whole range of snow conditions being there for the season. ON THE CLOTHING FRONT - lots of warm easy to wash and dry clothes and above all else very waterproof snow boots - cos you will live in them! A trusty jacket jacket with many layers for the diffrent climates and a couple of pairs of salopettes. Not many sequin tops either - it's far too cold! Have a good time! |

Hi Magic boy
We still have space in our catered chalet in La Clusaz for that week, and if you fancy sharing a room it could be only £350pp for the week. Snow's good at this time of year and we ski up to 2,400m. The ski slopes are 3 mins from the chalet and we do a dily drop off/pick up service so there is no trudging around in your snow boots and squeezing on the ski bus! We are also running a pro-rider week that week so if you fancy some adrenaline action - it's all inclusive for £650pp. Take a look at www.gravite.co.uk for more info or contact me direct dave@gravite.co.uk |
