Les Carroz is good for families and not too expensive.
Most of the skiing is up on a plateau but there are a few small drag near the bottom, and you can ski back down to the town if the snow is good. From what I can remember they have good snow cannon coverage too.

It's lost it's quaintness (unlike la Clusaz - but then I'm biased) and has sprawled a bit as it has grown. But it does give good access to Flaine, Samoens and Morillion so better for intermediates skiers who want to make the most of the huge area.

Flaine would be a better choice for beginners, although not picturesque. The nursery area is central and walk able from most of the accommodation except the Hameau. Have you looked at La Clusaz or Le Grand Bornand? Both are just an hour from Geneva, picturesque and good for beginners.
Weekend breaks in January.

We still have availability on the 8-12 Jan.

3 or 4 night weekend breaks available from just £275pp in our lovely chalet Fan La Bise which is the closest to the slopes - just 2 mins in our courtesy minibus!

If you can't do a weekend we have some special offers on our midweek January breaks from the 12-15th Jan and 02-05th Feb.

Take a look at http://www.gravite.co.uk/fanlabise.php for more information on this fab chalet and either call 020 8123 1284 or email dave@gravite.co.uk if you have any questions.

mid jan snow in Avoriz and flaine?
Started by User in France, 3 Replies
I'd go for Flaine any time.

Avoriaz is good but can be very cold at the top (as can Tignes) and if the winds are high a lot of the lifts will be closed and windblown.

Flaine however is in a bowl and a bit more sheltered so holds the snow better in the wind and isn't so exposed (except the top of the Grand van).

It may also be worth looking for places that offer short or cheaper midweek breaks as this not only keeps your accommodation costs down but also ski hire and ski pass prices down too. Also avoid the larger resorts which have expensive ski passes and restaurants!

Buying food down the mountain before you reach the resort will also save you a tiny fortune. we live in La Clusaz and shop in Thones just 10 minutes away as you can save up to 1€ on some products - it all adds up!
