I have been worried about where to book for a boarding holiday and have been looking at Tignes etc (higher altitude) How worried do i need to be during the middle of January? I like the Look of Avoriaz and Flaines but their highest lifts are 1000m lower?

I've been to Avoriaz 3 time in the past 2 years. The snow cover has been excellent in Jan and March. The area is vast and you can make your way into Stizerland too.

There is a natural park, made of logs etc and the snow kickers / tabletops / pipes are huge.

Don't even think twice - there is just as much chance of good snow here, as anywhere else - but I guess it can't be guaranteed.

Avoriaz is a traffic free resort - so you can board right down the centre - and nearly all the accommodation is ski in/out.

Sorry - haven't made it to Flaine.
You'll never know, unless you try...

Both Avoriaz and Flaine are very snow sure. If they had problems in January it would signal a very poor season accross the Alps. I am based in Morzine and generally head to Avoriaz most days. Conditions are normally great from early December until end of April, and it is at the heart of a vast ski area. According to the Daily Mail Ski & Snowboard Magazine, Avoriaz was the snowiest resort in France last year. Have skied Flaine a lot too and would recommend to anyone.Stop worrying and get your holiday booked, you won't go far wrong woth either of these resorts!

I'd go for Flaine any time.

Avoriaz is good but can be very cold at the top (as can Tignes) and if the winds are high a lot of the lifts will be closed and windblown.

Flaine however is in a bowl and a bit more sheltered so holds the snow better in the wind and isn't so exposed (except the top of the Grand van).
