Coloured lenses
Started by User in Ski Hardware, 6 Replies
yeah it all depends on the conditions and lighting. Pretty simple really, orange/yellow coloured lenses are for the flat light/snowy days when visibility is low and you cant see very much definition in the snow.

Dark coloured lenses are pretty obviously for the sunnier weather! Often the black/blue iridium ones or the ones that look orangey reflective on the outside. Some people even have completely clear lenses for the days when you really cant see anything!! But ive never struggled with my orangey ones.
Fortunately i haven't had first hand use of one and never want to either.

However earlier today i saw a sign at the top station of the Gem Lake chair in Big White saying "RECCO TRANSCIEVER STORED HERE" I've never seen a sign like that anywhere. I would assume they had more than one though, because the most avalanche prone area is the Cliff (which actually had an avalanche today trapping 7 people, 2 still missing i believe :( ). Gem Lake is the opposite side of the ski area to the Cliff so i'm sure they have at least another one at the top of the Cliff chair.

I'd heard that some rescue helicopters had them in, but they only work at a max of 50m above the snow. So im bad weather conditions thats pretty much impossible!!

Anyone who relies on those in the back-country is stupid. As someone said (forgot who now), they have a better record of finding a dead body rather than a live one.

Ross whats the date you fly out again??

The course is great fun actually, today i've been doing practice lessons, teaching the other people in my group. i thought id be really nervous doing it but i actually enjoyed it, which i suppose is a good sign!!

Level 1 exams are next weekend 10-13 Jan inclusive, 10th and 11th are the training course by the CSIA and 12th and 13th are the exam days.

Good luck with your exams and everything (whenever they are for you). I will let you know what they are like!

I started at the age of 8, and my first trip was to Niederau.

It was 1996.
