St Johann has quite a varied ski area and a nice town, Kirchdorf is a very friendly village with some nice blue runs to play about on, Fieberbrunn had powder the day we were there, so spent most of the time wondering where the heck my skis were, but was great when you fell over!! Spladoosh! There is plenty of variety, we all enjoyed the Steinplatte and there were 8 of us of mixed ability - and there are quite a few different nationalities who ski there. Do remember though that when you are on the 6 man chair, to make sure everyone knows they have to get off at the top - there is no middle station (as some 'East European National' told me), so he then caused problems for the other 5 of us getting off at the top - and so we ended in a heap! as we were late getting the bar up and getting ready to ski off! (I did call him something, but he may not have understood it!!) All the resorts have good skiing, variety, places to stop and catch your breath, great views and that this is why we went back again!! Enjoy! :D

Not Soll but saw in Saalbach - seemed you had to be off your trolley, 17 and of Dutch origin to do it. That said remember if you have had a full day's skiing then your body might be saying slow down take it easy (and this is when injuries occur) so just remember that the next morning the body might not fly into action like you hoped it would. That said it is fun to do/watch - but can get very cold, so wrap up well!

Hopefully I can help you, as I have skied that area. There was only 1 hotel in Waidring as I remember, a large family style hotel near the gondola up to the Steinplatte. The ski area up there is great, like a big bowl and assorted chairs and drags but some lovely open runs and when the sunshines there is nothing better! You also ski partly into Germany but no need for your passport. Several restaurants for keeping you going so that should do for a few days. However when we were there (we stayed in nearby Kirchdorf twice) you could use the ski bus and ski 10 different resorts on the same pass (i.e. St Johann, Fiberbrunn, etc.) Depends also on what standard of skier you are and if you want things to do off the slopes, as I don't remember seeing a village there with shops, etc. Maybe someone else can help with that one. Hope this helps a bit!

The word 'DAMP' springs to mind!! - and don't eat yellow snow!!

Have not skied Flachau, but have skied Saalbach-Hinterglemm during Fasching and it was a very funny day skiing!! If you have kids and can pack a costume great, it will add to it and they will get lots of attention, sweets, etc, at the least pack some facepaints and a funny hat!! A pair of wings is also an option!
People dress up as all sorts - I shared a chair with Bart Simpson and Darth Vader, 6 men dressed as Austrian maidens complete with dirndls and plaits, assorted vikings, Superman, bees and butterflies - you never knew what was coming over the hill next! Oh and then there was Michael Jackson and a waiter complete with tray... I always remember getting on a ski bus in the morning with some lads from our hotel who were dressed as a chicken, a gorilla, a tiger, bear and Scooby Doo - then seeing them snowboarding down the slopes under my chairlift (and the tiger twirling his tail as he descended) and then at the end of the day in the bar having swapped heads...!!) One of those 'you had to be there moments'!! |
You will be pushing it for April as Easter falls near the beginning, however with this year's snowfall you may be lucky. Soll in Austria should suit the stag party and beginners bit but not sure if there will still be snow, so maybe you need to look at a resort with access to a glacier (Kaprun/Mayrhofen, etc) Depends which is most important skiing or drinking - although will warn you off going on the slopes when you are still hungover!!

Errr maybe half term is the wrong time to go!! I have skied quite a few Austrian resorts - have a look at Neustift and the Stubai Glacier, Kirchdorf and the Schneewinkel area (10 resorts 1 lift pass), Saalbach-Hinterglemm (Saalbach busy but both linked along a valley floor), Westendorf and now linked to Kitzbuhel/Kirchberg, Kolsass-Weer (although you have to get a bus to higher stuff) and Fugen, and have also done Niderau/Oberau/Auffach, which you say you don't want.
Depends if you also want to do stuff off the slopes, meet up for lunch, etc and also £££'s!! |
Here is a tip for beginners and those who would like a little rhythm in their skiing on an easy run - one year a fab ski instructor paired us up, and we had to ski a blue/red run in pairs humming The Blue Danube all the way down, it is a waltz rhythm and worked very well - 123 -123 - also looking back up the slope we could see nice tracks!
I enjoy the cheesey europop - as it always reminds me of the Alps, but I guess you could also change words to songs like Flash by Queen to 'CRASH!!! AAAAGH!!' I also enjoy the Tyrolean yodelling music that you only get in Austria!! |
