A spring week in the Alpbachtal
Started by User in Austria, 25 Replies
Totally agree with this, we skied the area in 2012 but stayed in Alpbach itself at Haus Andreas - had a great time!! We did use the local bus and the Alpensee pass (which also allowed us to go a few stops on the train to Rattenberg when we could not ski one morning - the area has a lot to offer and a lovely atmosphere. I spent a very happy sunny morning tootling up and down an easy blue run on my own and thought that life does not get much better than this. Lovely to read your report!
Lofer about 30 mins from Salzburg

:)We have just had an excellent week in Lofer, Austria. It was a resort we had travelled through many times en route to other resorts, but our friends have bought an apartment in nearby Grubhof, so the opportunity to ski for a week was taken. The piste map of the area is good and the nice part for families is that the ski school and Kinder Club are all in the middle, so any beginners/children are easy to access. There are plenty of mountain restaurants, they all serve great food and have fab views - and plenty of seating and deckchairs. The ski school looked very good but I have to say the resort was very quiet - no lift queues, no waiting, no hassle - so really I should not be sharing this secret with you! The resort would not suit those who want to ski miles and miles or really challenge themselves but for a lovely week in a nice village, and stunning scenery, it ticked a lot of boxes for us. We also took the local bus via St Johann to Kitzbhuel for a look around (nice medieaval town, but glad we were not staying there) and you can also get the bus in the other direction to Zell Am See, or Salzburg easily for the day. Very good Tourist Information and free car park. As I said it will not suit everyone, but if you want somewhere within 30-40 mins of Salzburg Airport and some lovely skiing, then it is worth a look. No British tour ops go there, the British Ski Team were based there for many years, and it is a nice mix of nationalities, including many Scandinavians. Definitely suited us so will be back!!
Diary of a knee injury

My sympathies, but having been on crutches for an ankle op and then falling over and hurting other knee, so a list of MRi's and consultant appts - I was given the following advice - from now on wear a knee support on both when you ski - if you want to ski how you were skiing, then I give you 5 years and if you have the same again, that is it - end of! or you can just ski the easy stuff all day and have another 20 years! Bit of a no brainer really but last year in Alpbach I skied the easy blues all day, I was a very happy bunny, I had no crashes, I had rests now and again for my knee and ankle - and tomorrow I am off to Lofer in Austria, for another week of fun!! If I ski the same run up and down all week, I don't care, I am skiing, I am having the time of my life and another 20 years - yes please!!!

Edelweiss is always my ski tune - gets a good rhythm going in waltz time esp in Austria!! Personally I don't ski with earphones in, I prefer to listen to the birds whilst travelling up on the chair and listening to people's happy chatter and laughter! I feel it is like people going along talking in their mobile phones and not being aware of what is going on around them. All together now... Edelweiss... Edelweiss...

I remember the horrendous decor of the Berger, walked in and walked straight out again! We were in Hotel Austria mid way between the two resorts.
Ski socks

I have bought full length knee socks from Tescos, I wear these with the thin shin protectors and they are fine, no numb toes or crumpled up stuff in your boots - two pairs for £4 and you can wear them normally the rest of the year too. Last year in Alpbach a guy checking my boots asked why all the Brits always wore such thick socks. This might be easier for you to find such things in Tescos!

We usually ski that week and have never suffered with a shortage of snow in many years. Several places we have skied which are worth a look - Stubai Glacier area (stay in Neustift) and a free ski bus takes you to Flumps (that's what we called it) S**t 2000 and Elfer but by far the best ski area is the Stubai, on a beautiful bluebird day no better place to be!! Last year we skied in Alpbach, which is now linked over to Auffach, very pretty village and don't do the tour operator trips as night, the well organised tourist board do some lovely free apres ski in the village - Haus Andreas recommended! Hope this helps, it is a good week to ski!
