Looking at that new map, it seems the places with the most skiing are now lift linked ie auffach and alpbach. This still means other parts including niederau can only be reached by car or bus.
I've skied auffach and it was definitely the best part of the old ski area but no good for more than a day or two really.
In really agree with the post that suggests using somewhere like niederau as a base with a car, if that's the kind of holiday you want.

Sorry, Snapzz, can't quite understand. Do you mean to ski from Miederau toAuffach?
I can ski from Niederau to Oberau, although the route isnt widely known. However, there are farm terrains, between Oberau and Auffach, and a lift system may not offer a good cost benefit.
So better to use the ski bus. Auffach is much easier skiing than Niederau, on piste for sure, Auffach is much less steep. Off piste, Niederau hassome gorges and cliffs, and is an official wilderness area.
There used to be 17 runs in Niederau! I can only remember 11..
I can certainly vouch for those ! Red ski school last year put me into the "top" group and we were taken down the black from Lanerkoepfl most days with diversions off to those "gorges". Very , erm, exhilirating :)
Interesting observations about Auffach, Dave. I must spend more time there this year.

I love Niederau for all the reasons that have been mentioned already, but am aware of its size constraints. I suppose one slight disadvantage to James' suggestion of skiing several different areas (Skiwelt, Kitz, Mayrhofen etc) is the question of having to invest in several different lift passes, which would probably make a week or two's stay more expensive than sticking to one resort. But an interesting idea all the same.

Yeah it can be more expensive but planned properly doesn't have to be.
A Kitzbühler All Star card is designed for doing exactly what is suggested, it includes 10 different ski areas, 356 gondolas and lifts and 824 km of piste, at a costs 224 Euro for 6 days.
See for more info at.

If you're really up it, and you can only properly make full use of this if you have no job, you can go for the season Tirol Card for 600 Euro.
Valued from October till May it allows you full use of every resort in the Tirol with access to 1,133 lifts and 4000km of piste!

Depends what your priorities are but given that the whole Tirol can be driven across in 3 hrs great fun to do and affordable in the same way that any season ticket is if your mad for a particular sport.
I suppose it like treating a ski holiday in the same way that one might go on a summer Holiday to Spain, staying somewhere and hiring a car to visit the beach and various other attractions, and amusement parks in the area. In this case they are just all ski resorts. It measn you can stay where the accomidation is cheapest but not miss out on the best skiing or indeed go to where the snow reports is saying it is best in any given week.

I am assuming that that side of the mountain must be unable to support new piste routes or lifts?

As Dave said the farmers aren't keen to have their land developed and have lifts put in lnking Niederau to Auffach. It took about a 1 million years to persuade them of linking Auffach to Alpbach with far more obvious benefits than linking Niederau to Auffach.
Ski bus is free and takes about 15 minutes and its is all teh same lift pass.

Bilip, I know my opinion is disregarded by some but I found the best skiing and snow over at auffach. Lots more variety and nice and sunny in the right conditions.
