Tony is correct, in that the Schatzberg is a bit higher than the Marbachjoch, so the powder is a degree or so colder. It is very open, and feels like more variety.

Thanks for the info Tony; I'll certainly be nipping out earlier in the mornings to catch the bus this Jan from N to Auffach. I was particularly interested that if the runs are "easier" they might suit my family more too; question though, does the Red ski school go there, as I like them, and my nearest-and-dearest certainly do ! I also notice from the new map that with the connection to Alpbach, there are plenty of blue runs available for them too.

Yes Billip, the Red school tend to use the slopes of Auffach as a transition from the Kropfraderjoch to the main Niederau runs. They also have a good mogul face, a channel, and some easily accessed off piste.

I always have my car so Auffach is only 10 mins from my place in Niederau......but I am very concerned to see what happens this season with regards to parking as Auffach is normally a borderline nightmare for parking after about 9am. With the new link I see it being a potential disaster??

Niederau is kinda fun with fresh snow, but when the piste gets all flattened out I prefer to go down to Hopfgarten or Auffach.

Obviously I *should* kinda use the skibus but am lazy and prefer the car.

If only a route could be opened up so that we could ski from Niederau to Auffach.

I wrote a little report on N last March, if anyone can tell me how to add it in here (or even better still, do it for me :) ) there might also be some useful info in there.

Happy skiing!

THAT will never happen. Unfortunately it is simply too great a distance to be economic. A quick unmathematical look on Google Earth shows the distance (as the crow flies) of the new Auffach to Alpach link as 2.25kms.........whereas from around the Anton Graf Hutte in Niederau to the bottom of Auffach is 4.5kms.

I seem to remember a figure of €15M euros as the cost of the new link but might be wrong there.

Actually Niederau to Hopfgarten is 3.35kms so that is a shorter distance and would make more commercial sense. But again I don't see that as happening......it would be of little interest to SkiWelt.

More sensible would be to improve the road from Niederau to Hopfgarten, or even build a new one, and run regular shuttle buses.

Personally I think as a resort Niederau is rather rundown, neglected and behind the times. It is cheap, but there are no decent pubs and restaurants compared to somewhere cool like Westendorf. It is a 2* resort basically.
