I just looked at that website. What thickness and length of sock do I need? They are also pretty expensive - £15 for a pair of socks! At that price, I think I will be buying one pair of socks and washing them each night.

The thickness very much depends on the fit of your boot. When you buy new boots, you should look for a good fit with thin socks. As the boots pack in, you can wear progressively thicker socks to keep the tight fit. If you haven't worn your boots since last season, they may be a little tight, so you might need a thinner sock for the first day. Boots are most responsive with light to mid weight socks, and you start to lose some feel if you need thick socks. Never wear two pairs.

Thanks Trencher,
As I have repeatedly said, I'm hiring boots, so maybe I need a variety of sock thicknesses so that at least one of them will fit correctly in the boot, and I can keep washing them.

I never thought simply buying socks could be so complicated.

And do I buy the longest ones?

Ski socks are over the calf length. You really want them to reach the just below the knee, and not have a tight band at the top, which would restrict blood flow. You would not want the sock tops in the boot, where again it might restrict blood flow.

Ski sock come in more sizes than regular socks, so pick the right size.

As I said in the other thread, I really find the types with a lot of variation in thickness to be uncomfortable, and prone to rucking up when you put boots on.

TK Maxx have some Merino wool socks in currently in most stores, 2 pairs for £8.99.
You may have to rummage and search but I have bought 6 pairs recently.

Otherwise, paying £15 or so will serve you better than £5 for a pair of socks that will hurt your legs or possibly crease up and prevent blood flow at times. You should notice a big difference.

Thanks Tony,
I will have a look in our local TK Maxx shop (30 miles away) next time I'm there. It is one of my favourite shops. But I will also buy one of these very expensive pairs of socks and see if I can tell the difference.

Ian, best of luck with your new socks. I'm glad to hear you're still splashing out on very expensive new ski gear in spite of the recession . I will expect a full report on the socks when you get back.

Those of you who have had bought a boot and had it custom fitted, I was wondering what cost I'm looking at. I have a budget of around £250 set aside. Is that sufficient.

bandit,

you mentioned SZK on SH's forum. These guys truelly are a fountain of boot fitting related knowledge! I messaged Footworx on their website, just waiting a response.

one thing that did put me off a bit was a thread called 'A day at the zoo...'. This guy got his boots done with custom beds etc, 589 euros and a discount. Ouch! They were Dalbello Krypton boots however.

Obviously the UK would be cheaper with the exchange (as you mentioned earlier). So maybe CEM would be a visit, could make a day of it!
