Tony,
I must have missed your thread about socks, I don't remember it at all. Sorry.
I still don't get it about the socks though. Where do I get them, and what do they call themselves? I wear 'Ski socks' as sold in sports shops and places like Millets, i.e. thick socks which I think are made of wool, because they shrink if I put them in the wrong wash.

You can try contacting SMALLZOOKEEPER on Snowheads ) Read a few of his posts and all will become clear.
Cem stocks about 35 different boot types currently, and is pretty busy. He now has an assistant bootfitter and she's also pretty busy.
He does retro fits, as long as you've purchased a boot in the right shape and size. The last pair of boots I purchased from EB, they measured me before fitting and the boots are too big. Once the liners settled they became wellies  My new pair are 6mm narrower and a smaller mondopoint size.
I don't know any of the fitters at the big stores, I'm sorry.
AllyG,
You want to get yourself some Falke ski socks, or Smartwool. These are my favorites and they tend to last well. I had a couple of pairs of Salomon's and they shrunk pretty fast.
Basically the socks are thin in areas and have strategically positioned padding over critical areas like ankle and heel etc.
Hope that helps.
bandit,
You really are a fountain of knowledge haha! I'll see what SMALLZOOKEEPER has to say.
Thanks
Ally
Here is a good supplier of suitable ski socks.
http://www.specialistsocks.co.uk/ I have used this company and they are fine.
I would suggest that you wash your ski socks by hand and follow the mfrs washing instructions to preserve the qualities of the socks.
Quality brands to look out for are are Falke, Bridgedale,Thor-lo, Smartwool, Teko :D

Otherwise I'll buy a boot that fits well and get it retro-fitted by someone when i'm out there.
Anyone got any reccomendations or heard of some good places?
Franck at Nevada Sports in Tignes, or Steve Rooke (ex Lockwoods) here http://www.foot-works.fr/
Hey bandit,
That website is closed for the summer unfortunately.
Do you think this would be a reasonable way of getting this done? Get my boots from Ellis Brigham or Snow and Rock under the recommendations of the fitters in there, and have them do what they can. I can always go to another fitter later on if I have problems.
Or just go straight to a pro like Cem that you mentioned? Does he have boots in stock, or is he a retro fitter?

EVO88, if you do want to buy in Chamonix, another reputable fitter is Jules in Sanglard Sports, near to the Sports Centre in town. He (very)occasionally posts on SH as Largezookeeper )
All these fellas know each others' work quite well. As for me being a fountain of knowledge hmmm you're very kind
If only I could ski as well as I post

Evo88 and Bandit,
Thanks very much for your messages about socks. I will buy myself some new ones for Christmas (and wash them by hand!).

Oh no,
I just looked at that website. What thickness and length of sock do I need? They are also pretty expensive - £15 for a pair of socks! At that price, I think I will be buying one pair of socks and washing them each night.
