We've also dismissed Soll each year because of altitude, but having researched this in depth before booking for 2010, I realised that height isn't everything!

There are so many variables, including the type of terrain the snow is covering, the direction of the mountains, the local climate, the surrounding topography, not to mention the ability of the resort to lay down a good base from snow cannons (if snow doesn't fall early, but it's still cold). Bearing in mind that all the lower runs are either baby lifts and ropeways, and the rest of the skiing, including blues, are much higher, plus the free buses that take you to the lifts, (or you can leave your gear at the lift garages and walk the 10 minute journey to the town centres), the huge ski area, the selection of cheap accommodation compared to other Austrian resorts this year (in 4 different villages), the multitude of mountain eateries, and its proximity to Innsbruck and Salzburg, we decided to give it a go.

We have been to Saalbach/Hinterglemm twice and found the skiing 'convenience', inconvenient. Saalbach is on a hill, so depending on where you stay, you either walk up hill at night or in the morning – in Hinterglemm two of the main lifts are across a field, and it's a big field! For beginners, there is quite a steep progression from the crowded green nursery slopes to the blue runs, they would not be blue if it wasn't for the fact that for marketing purposes, a resort with no blues wouldn't sell! The variety of reds are spectacular though, and the lift system is modern and fast. Après in Hinterglemm is ok, but according to our sons (28/31) night-life is dull and the taxi to Saalbach is expensive!

Detailed and informative report but does that mean you are going to Soll? A group of us are going Jan 23rd as long as my leg sorts itself out!

Off to soll in the morning, not been there for 20 years and looking forward to seeing the changes
I agree with all the problems with the bus and the walking but wanted to give it another go.
Will give a full report on my return and hope to have a fab time. :D
