With all these ski magazines, my view is that you have to be really careful not to step in the advertorial, because they seem full of it. It really should be glaringly apparent that articles are "paid for" advertising, but it's not always so IME.
Subsequently, I would be very wary of buying any gear recommended by a UK ski magazine :(
In one word - yes. :D

Since you were taught, ski equipment has changed substantially, and it's unlikely that you'll just happen to stumble across the new techniques unless someone shows you.
My suggestion, book a couple of private lessons, with some practice time between them, so the teacher can work with the skills you already have.

Many good UK skiers who want to keep on improving have tuition with folks such as Warren Smith or Snoworks, these events do tend to be quite intensive. Warren Smith is running tuition at indoor ski slopes across the UK this summer.
I don't work for either of them, and I've never been on either company's courses, but they do seem to have a good reputation, among people I've spoken to.
I have been on a number of 1-2 week intensive ski courses and consider myself passably competent, though other posters on J2ski may wish to disagree

I most certainly would not choose a resort based on it having "good apres-ski" as what defines "good" is different to everyone...and I'm there for the skiing :D

I suppose that makes me sound like a keen skier )

BTW, Chamonix has extended it's opening for the season. Terrific snow depths, and lots of places to stay!
Advice....Skiing in late May?....

Although many resorts are extending their seasons, late May is pushing the dates a bit.
Zermatt will be open, and here's a linky to their summer timetable..

Another option is Saas Fee, also in Valais, which usually has a year round opening.

Should be glorious with the snow depths that have accumulated this winter.

Funny cafe moments

Cafe in Arc 2000. 4 of us wander in at 4pm tired and wanting a warm drink to chase away the chill caused by the foul weather. Waiter walks up, and barks BOISSONS?? at us. Okay we're a bit slow with the local dialect, but it was at machine gun speed. This does not work for the waiter so he tries again, volume like the place is full...

BOISSONS??

He's looking a bit peeved by now and we're trying to get up to speed with the accent. He's obviously got some stupeed jonny foreigner in his establishment, so he gives it one last go as we are clearly deaf as well....

BOISSONS??

At last he gets through, we get our coffee and hot choccy, but strangely he fails to score a tip
