Tony you are just in phase 4 based on my readings of your posts! It is the most dangerous phase! Be careful since 2009 will show you why!

A famous old British writer stated, " there is not art in finding mind's construction in the face" and I want you to deal with that mind! I visit this site because the skiers are so respectful, intelligence and wanting to learn.

actually it's "There's no art. To find the mind's construction in the face." although I'm quite unsure what you mean in quoting it.

I do believe that's from Macbeth.

Despite growing up in Shakespeare country, I've not read much by the bard

Somewhere close to Geneva with reasonable public transport links..hmmmm. Chamonix is a possibility, plenty of minibuses heading up and down the valley.
Portes du Soleil and Grand Massif tend to be geared to tourists, so weekend travel possibilities good.
Consider somewhere like St Gervais, which has a rail link. You will need to do plenty of study on timetables.

If you are going to stay for 3 months or less, then it could be cheaper for you to rent in the lower bits of the 4 Valleys in Switzerland, with good rail and postbus infrastructure (for example). Over 3 months, and you get into issues with permits n' stuff.
any advice for the first week of December

knee braces

Buy the brace that fits. Get measured, get advice, and get it fitted anatomically, by a specialist physio.
Fit is everything.
The ESF is a syndicate of ski teachers. It's the largest in France, but fortunately there is not a monopoly. There are very good ESF teachers...and some who should hang up their boots...as in all walks of life.
As the ESF is a syndicate, a portion of the teachers' income goes to the organisation, for buying those nice red jackets that let the rain in so well )

Yes, you will be able to ski by yourself after having a few lessons. However it's a question of degree. How much do you want to struggle? I'm still having tuition after around 70 weeks on skis. The very best skiers have coaches, trainers, mentors. There is always more to learn :D
