If you look carfeully, that beginner does the "classic" error on all line or bar lifts. That is to lean into and sit on bar.

Ski centers should have "practice" lift for all skiers !

In short,,learn to use lifts before going to top!
100mm width underfoot skis

In regards to +100 mm. skis, may I give you my point of view.

That extra width is for powder and floatation ON powder, serious powder ! Not the 20 cm. type.

I do not recommend to any skier +100 mm as "all round" ski. You lose out in performance.

Stay in the 90s range until you really are competent in powder and off-piste then get the serious powder skis.

My point of view is, if you want a ski for all-round conditions you get a ski that does all conditions at the "average",, range. I want a ski that does performance at the "top level of performance" ! It deems better skiing and gives you more chills and thrills.
Just my point of view. I am sure others will have other points of view !

Item 10 : Polar Fleece Jacket Quiz
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 23 Replies
This last item is aimed at the "more mature" skier who has lived skiing beyond the slopes.
Once you accept skiing as a life style, you discover that skiing has ties to many unusual people and contexts.

Ernest Hemingway wrote many well know novels. He wrote three books in which skiing was integrated to his message.

List the three books which refer to skiing.

That is the final item for this quiz. I will wait one week and then score all answers. Persons who participated in the quiz will get all the correct answers.

I hope this quiz has made your summer just a little shorter.

Pavel
Well we are coming to the end of our quiz. I really hope someone wins this jacket!
Here is item 9;

There are so many "inventors" who have found better ways to tie down boots first with straps, then with bindings, to make ski boots more comfortable, to make skis more effective and to make us see better in a snow storm ( see story of Scott ).

There was a young European student who skied a great deal and wanted to profit from his skiing experience. He decided to make his Ph.d thesis on how to make ski bindings better. He got his degree based on a different ski binding design and also produced a binding that soon was copied by others since he had a "brilliant" design ( that most bindings all use now ).

Name this new binding designed by this student.

For 2 extra points give the special design which made this unit so "adaptive" to skiers who wanted to get the most from their skis.
( If you look at 90% of modern bindings today, they all have this feature in their system).
Ski companies all try to have "miracle" models with exotic cores, woods, grasses (bamboo), yes even rock cores.
All ski companies have every year a new ski with "radical extreme gadgets or designs" to lure customers to ski faster, better with more ease.

There is one company that was known as being "ahead of the curve", unique core designs, unique configurations since the owner and designer was an aerospace engineer.

His most unique ski was a FOUR steel edged ski just for hard/icy slopes. ( That was not a typo,,,,,yes four edges on one ski) While other skis skidded on ice these skis cut into the ice with a special sound. They now are treasured skis desired by many knowledgeable skiers.

Name the ski company that made this unique 4 edged ice ski!

Now if you want to impress everyone,,,,name the ski.
