Far Queue,

You have found the secret. Those little things during the day !

Some people sit all day and do "passive" activities, then go to "health club",,spa,,,gym for 2 hours !

I do those little things.

I do 10 push ups on stairs. Every time I go up my house or other clean stairs in office ( yes once I got caught doing push up in stairs with a great suit on !!!! )! I once calculated at end of day I had done +800 push ups !

In kitchen I do those squats while waiting for my coffee.

In basement while waiting for computer to "warm up" I built myself a ski platform with plywood which has a round metal ball at base. Great for knees, agility, ankles ! If you look very carefully most of World Cup ski racers use such a platform. Some even go one better using a "ballon" !

I walk every morning 5 km. with weights around ankles.

Yes,,I am a bit "extreme", but I love to be ready for skiing!

Oh I forgot the very best. A bag of rocks in my backpack while I climb ski trails in the weekend! You feel so light when you do begin to ski!

Whenever I go with a group,,by Tuesday many are having problems going up stairs, getting into bed never mind getting out of bed! Those few minutes do help !

See you on the hill this January1

I forgot the most important part of your verification of ski material.

On my boots I have a special adjustment mechanism which allows me to adjust the angle of the cuff of my boot!

I have two screws one on the medial side and one on the lateral side.

Last year while on holiday one of the screws loosen. By the time I skied down to store for a scpecial screwdriver,,,the screw came off!

Spent 1 hour at shop trying to find a screw for this boot. Finally took off anchor section within boot and installed another compatible unit!

To avoid this get some "Lock Tight" or women's clear nail polish place a dab on screw threads and tigthen !

Mike2,

What a coincidence !

My wife is just in hospital after getting same symptoms after tennis match. Her pain was 10 times more intense.

It may not be same cause but may I suggest you;
1. keep a log to note time, context and type of pain.
2. Locate pain on leg areas with a felt pen that can be washed off
3. see a physician for an MRI if possible and detailed spine examination of the L3 to L5 area
4. Rest after pain

In my (non professional) opinion taking pain killers or muscles anti-inflammatory pills without medical advice is "problematic" ! I take Aleve while skiing but it is "monitored" by physician" .

Doing exercise again with no advice from physiologist, therapist physicians may be "problematic"

The body is telling you something via the pain. Listen to it!

Go see the "experts" off internet sites!

Strange to write this ,,just after I mowed my lawn !

September is the month to "say hello" to your skiing partners. You know the ; boots, skis, poles, jackets and ,,,,,,,

Here are some basic steps to a better ski season with them.

1. First get all jackets and pants out of storage.
2. Examine then for tears, cuts, damage.
3. Verify all pockets for hidden money. ( I typically hide emergency money )
4. Clean and wash them
5. I spray mine with a 3M waterproofing spray ( very light sprays)
6. I find that many jackets and pants have short narrow velcro ! I sew in widder longer 1" sections on jackets and pants. Velcro does wear off!
7. Look closely at zippers. I take a very light oil or soap bar and apply to zipper. A drop is enough.
8 If you have a 'high tech" jacket with vents make sure the flaps can close well1
9. If you have older jackets and you use an Ipod,,,I "burn" a small hole in the top of the inside pocket. How do you do this ?
Just heat up a small screwdriver with a propane torch until point is red.
Have a friend spread out jacket so you will not damage jacket and insert red point into pocket at highest level!
Do it one carefully.
Now you have a hole large enough for wire and plug and nylon is melted around hole!
With this set up you can have Ipod INSIDE jacket, zipper close and wire running INSIDE jacket to your ears. Batteries will not get cold. Wires will be catch on poles gloves, glasses etc,,,

10. If you are good at sewing,,I sew inside my ski jacket collar a polar fleece collar liner which overlaps in the front ! It is soft. It stops wind from getting in front of my neck!

Skis
Hope you waxed them before you put them away.
Check all edges very very carefully.
Check base very very carefully
Check bindings at articulation points ( clearly if you know nothing about such matters ,,go to ski shop )

Poles
Check handles for tears or cracks
Check straps
Look at plastic rings for tears or cuts

Now for the most important ski equipment,,,,,,YOU !

1. Haver you had a medical examination lately
2 Are you "tuning up" ?
3 Are reading about,,,,,,
4 Are you surfing the web for those deals those hidden places
5. Are you calling your friends for "small hikes"

Finally,,,,

Are you dreaming of that perfect,,, effective,,,,soft,,,,,soaring run you will do soon !

You see,,it all starts in your mind.

If you dream about it,,,,,,it will happen !

Soon,,,,,,,,

SwingBeep,
Yes Trencher, understood my point. I perhaps did not express myself clearly.

Let me try again.

First SwingBeep, you are very correct in noting that there are differences in ski construction and ski performance. If you have read some of my previous posts you will note that I mention this over and over again. That is the challenge for all skiers to find THE ski that fits their : price range, ability level and expectations!

In 2011 all the "low quality", inferior skis are gone ! The market is just to competitive ! Those companies that made "furniture", made aircrafts, that made armaments and on the side made also skis,,,,well they are gone ! Ski production is now controlled by huge "investment" companies and production is very technical.

My point was addressed to beginner skiers and not "sophisticated" , knowledgeable skiers like you ! Few skiers would know the difference in the Rockwell hardness of a ski edge or the thickness of two layers of Zincral !

There are other sites for experts in this matter. There they debate such technical matters!

On this site skiers what to find a ski that will make skiing "fun" that is relatively lower cost and not fall apart after one or two skiing trips! ( except for a few fanatics which will not be mentionned since everyone on this site knows them )I was addressing my comments to them.

Thank you however for making the point to others on how skis do vary in performance and construction. Also thank you for sharing the excellent Austrian site which lists skis !

One question to you SwingBeep in regards to that list.
Do you know the difference between criterion referenced evaluation of skis and normative referenced evaluation of skis ?

To really understand those charts,,one must understand how the evaluation is done!

Those ++++++ are based on skier's expectations,,standards or comparison of tested skis for that year? Understand my point ?

Respectfully,
Pavel

Dave Mac,

Since you mentioned "rock skiing",,,

To get in shape for serious skiing I walk up a local ski center not far from my home! Great for knees and heart!

Yesterday I was walking up with a friend and we got thinking about a "one up-man-ship ritual" some skiers like to practice.

We all know this ritual. It is,,,who will be first on the hill and of course post it on YOU TUBE,,,

We located a section of the slope which has lots of grass.

We will convince the resort owner to "test" his snow guns soon since it does get cooler here in the evenings and we will ski down this section.

Will send you a picture since I am not a YOU TUBE type skier!

Yes I will avoid the rocks!

Great to be young and foolish!

Bandit is correct.
For beginner powder skiers they should not ski behind a "leader" so close!
Please forgive this "error" !

My point was to allow the beginner not to consider the slope or the speed by focussing on the leader. The assumption was that the leader was a guide, instructor, thus would not fall or lead skier in a "dangerous" section.
I was wrong is suggesting such close distance.

Bandit thank you for the correction !
