Ian,
That is a "tough one" ! A borderline case.

When I go off to ski for two weeks, I bring along skiing material. The essentials ! Since I do go to skiing towns, skiing resorts I rarely bring my "dinner jacket" or power suit !

I do bring a ski coaches jacket which looks more "formal" !

What is really ba manners, is to wear ski jacket DURING supper or worst those low low cut boarder pants while having supper!

Ian was is the ultimate worst is to "slip into your pocket,,bread, muffins,,,etc,,,," in your jacket for later meals !

Seen it !

How do you handle skiing on ICE?

Tino,

If you look UP while skiing down a steep section,,,,what happens while you are going down !

That is like the tennis player who looks across net to see his/her shot before hitting ball or the gold player that looks up to see how far his ball will go,,before hitting ball !

UP is yesterday,,,,down is future !

Only two speeds in good skiing. Fast and faster !

Of course always under control! Slow is actually more difficult to ski!

Problem is that speed is relative! My fast to some ( like Cuche, Miller, Vonn ) is snail's pace !

About time!

LOTA,,,

PSSSSSSS,,shhhhhhhhh not too loud about this "improvement" in Fernie ! Too many skiers will discover this gem!

For years it was the "hidden powder resort" that no one knew! Tourists never even heard of this place,,so keep it low profile ( just for us) !

Ha,,,,the dangers of the internet. The word will be out !

A temple of powder,,,,,so low whispers please !

Head skis

Olla,

Ski companies make "special" rental ( for hire) skis for many ski resorts!

They also make special cosmetics for large chain retail stores that have many ski stores. These are called "deck skis" !

It is possible that the Heads you had were one of these !

I tested all the Heads several months ago and never saw such a ski. I have Head Supershapes and Head WC SL as my personal skis and they do not have an "orange" tip !

May I suggest to all who "hire" or demo skis to note the small figures ( numbers) at the tail end of the ski ! This gives you; the "parabolic", curve of the ski that is the width in mm. of the tip , waist and tails ! You will also get a R= , or just R 13 ! That is the radius the ski will take if it is put on edge and allowed to turn on this edge ( with no influence from the skier) ! That is the theoretical radius of the ski due to its side cut !
Amazing all the jargon you can learn just to select a ski!

I have seen a model from a given ski company ( that is with same side cut ) yet with different names and logos in different countries ! All about marketing ! Image !!!

I have also seen from the same ski company, the exact ski in all aspects ( core, edges, side cut etc,,) but with different graphics and different names !

The reason for this ?

The "free style" skiers are younger, more adventuresome and tend to like; skulls, blood, slurs, vulgar words, etc,,,, Same ski for older crowd,,,,,,no wild graphics, no nudes, no blood, skulls, etc,,,

Oh,,,,the first ski is 200$ US more expensive ! Wonder why ?

Hope you find your ski, if not try the WORLD CUP SL ski ! It will make you heart soar!
Just my opinion !

Tony,

Interesting "subject" and very delicate,,but since we are on net and I can not see you,,,,may I ?

The weight factor is important ( not for social reasons) in skiing since with the use of modern '"shaped" skis you need to use hips and core body parts more "dynamically" !

If you have a chance to read, "Ultimate Skiing" or just watch great skiers on You Tube doing fast tight "carving type" effective turns,,you will note how the hip is crucial ! More fat = less reaction time to follow ski! That core area ( hips, thighs, stomach areas) acts like a pendulum ( please technical experts not here ). Typically men have "grey fat" in stomach area which takes a long time to get rid of !

Slower,,,no Tony you will be a "mean skiing machine" with a more "trim" physique.

The trick is not to go on those "diets cycles" where you deprive yourself of all the goodies. Just lower portions, breads, pastas and do as Mac Dave does,,,,,,well not those 1,0000 squats !!!
First season in canada

jibberjabber,

First ,,interesting name ! I assume jibber means to "speak a lot,,,to chat, "

A short intro to skiing in Canada ! I stress short!

But first are you coming to this country for all year skiing or just two weeks or three months?

There are two major "groupings" !

Eastern Canada = Quebec and ,,,,,well just Quebec ! I am sure I will hear from Ontario skiers and skiers from Nova Scotia ! (both provinces in Canada) Yes they have some ski centers but,,,,,,,not for you!

We will return to Quebec later.

The other choice is western skiing which is in British Colombia and Alberta . This is called skiing in the Rockies !

Each option has its charms!

You must indicate to me what you want in skiing experience !

I travel there every year with some groups so can tell you about both options!

Eastern Skiing ( Quebec )

Three regions; Laurentians, Eastern Townships, Charlevoix

Now the real debate will begin!
Laurentian area made up of smallish centers ( except for Tremblant) is the social skier heaven. Lots of bars, restos and crowds. Short runs. Crowded ! Great skiers do not go there unless they are instructors, have families or are cruising for dates!

Tremblant is special. It is know as the ski Disneyland ! Lots of marketing to get "out of town skiers" Last year was the worst year there with lots of ice,,,little snow etc,,, Nice "plastic foreign village" geared à la Los Vegas style ! Short runs. Lots of crowds. Prices high! In short a place to be seen and see beautiful upward mobile persons ! Lots of bottle necks due to design of runs!

Eastern Township;
Several smallish ski centers " Not geared for tourist from Europe, since trails too short. Crowds and many older skiers! I would not recommend any resorts for you !

Charlevoix ( Quebec City,,,,,if you know your history,,,,this is the famous city where Britain took over control of North American by defeating the French ) ! Memories are very "sensitive" about this battle her so you must tone down your "strange accent" or speak French!
Skiing here is unique. There is a place called "Le Massif " which will become a mega center in the coming years! Unite view. Unique skiers. A must since it will get you out of your "cultural bubble" and you will meet unique skiers here. Great great skiers. very social,,yet not aggressive!

Mt. St. Anne is another ski center in this region. More "touristy" and large wide groomed runs. You can do both ski centers since they are just 1 hour apart ! very cold in winter! Best skiing is in March ( but be careful of university holidays ) !

The plus in selecting eastern skiing.
1. Travel time
2. Social context
3.Cultural experience ( the French "Québecois women are unique skiers,,,)
4. Food amazing ! In Massif,,no hot dogs, no hamburgers,, in short no junk foods ever,,,,,
5. Very special skiing experience which you will never forget!

Now for the west !
Before I begin,,you must understand that there is and will always be rivalry between these two regions so I am sure to get "roasted" by one or the other group !

Each has it "flavors" ! I will honest since I do not work for any of these groups. I do however travel several times as skier to both areas. I like both areas for different reasons!

If you plan to stay in Canada more than 2 months,,then you must go to western ski resorts ( unless you want to meet great Québecois female skiers and marry one ) !

If you choose western ski resorts. Then which one is for you !

Give me your email and I will send you some information since this post is too long already !
( and I do not want to get "fried" by my contacts at Fernie " )

Respectfully,
Pavel
