That is the modern direct to parallel teaching model Dave. You are looking to make a D shape with the inside leg, initiating the turn with the inside ski. It's not so much a cranking of the knee, but a rotation of the inside leg at the hip joint. The outside leg and ski are "recruited" by the inside leg movement to follow. The joint that may be stressed a little (for me)is actually the ankle. This would apply to all turns, skidded or carved. |
You are right Tony, skiing has not become more dangerous. People wear helmets because they can get some degree of protection against injury, helmets are often warmer and more comfortable than hats, and because helmets are now available. In the past helmets were not as well designed and were not easily available. There are dozens of sports where helmets were not worn in the past, but are now the norm. Most of those sports do not have a legal requirement to wear a helmet, but it is often a no brainer (scuse the word play) that head protection is a sensible precaution. While there may be debate on the degree of protection a helmet offers, there is no debate that many minor and some serious injuries are prevented. It is sad that some people feel threatened by the shift to helmet wearing, but it is a fact (at least in the US) that most serious skiers and snowboarders now wear helmets. I'm sure smokers feel the same way in an increasingly non smoking society; although I have never heard of anyone being harmed by second hand bobble hat wearing  |
Can't help specifically, but I have found different ear pieces make quite a difference. I like ear pieces that have foam around the ear, but have only a thin layer of material over the ear. The material allows almost unimpeded hearing whilst still keeping the ears warm. Any foam directly over the ear muffles sound.

As long as you pump some of the good stuff up into the hoses/nozzles. That's where it freezes up badly. |
Volcano custom footbeds versus Comformable custom footbeds

The problem with mail order is that every foot is different. You may be in a 26.0 boot, but a cut down 28.00 foot bed might fit your foot better. You won't know until you stand on a few different sizes. The oven molding marginally shapes the foot bed a little more to your foot.

Just crouch forward not back. |
I haven't tried it, but it looks like a great ski for your purposes. All the manufacturers now have 80mm + - waisted ski with almost race spec construction. The differences are in the side cut design and radius, and the camber profile. Unfortunately ski manufacturers don't give details of their side cut designs,; you can only go by the radius. These ski have an midrange radius that would be easy to use on piste, but not too turny. They have some tip rocker for easy turning, and a generally easier ride. Two metal layers which make for a damp ski that will hold an edge over ice and chop.
The only way to really know is to demo, but on the specs, it looks very good. |
Skis have changed a lot in just the last three years. The materials, design, and construction (it's not just the usual manufacturers hype). You are likely working a lot harder on those than you need to. So if you have the money, you'll likely find it's worth upgrading.
