How do you handle skiing on ICE?

Bandit,

Problem is,,Bandit the harm is already done !

Those germs have already multiplied !

The good news is,,,the alcohol probably killed those budding germs.

Mind you,,I did get an infection from ice on slope. A small cut became infected while I was racking a FIS race course. Seems the "water" used on the course was from "sewage system" ! ie recycled water !

Few skiers know that many of the snow guns use "recycled" water straight from "homes" !

Another reason why not to fall on slope ice ! hughhhhhhh !

As a "world traveller" Bandit I am sure you never allow ice to be placed in your drinks in tropical countries or "developing country" resorts!

I was speaking to another skier friend about this site and this topic,,,,ice !

He gave me an interesting analogy about ice !

When you are at bar and given a drink with ice in glass !

What do you do?

Try to "crush it" ?
Try to force it down ?

No!

You let it "sooth your mouth",,,you let it smooth out in the drink !

So it is with skiing on it !

It your skis "smooth" out the ice with soft edges !

Do not force down your edges on ice ! Sooth the ice with soft edges !

Let it become your friend of pleasure rather than enemy !

Great analogy !

You all own my a drink now,,,if we ever meet on slopes !

Pavel
This is the quiet time.
Few skiers coming for tuning.
Shop is cleaned.

Waiting ! So if you have any questions about tuning your ski, this is the place.

Honest, down to earth answers.

Setting DIN value. ( yes some skiers can do it )

Playing with binding position. ( yes some bindings can be moved fore or aft on ski )

Modifying boots !

I am here for you !

A special note about "power straps" to women skiers !

Many women have a gastronemius muscle ( calf muscle ) that has a lower insertion point than men and also is wider at lower part.
This results in having potential fitting problems at top of ski boots! Too tight liner !

This power strap will help if you know how to use it correctly.

First make sure first top buckle is at maximum length. Usually there are two or three holes on plastic part in order to position buckle. In my wife's case I drilled another hole closer to end in order to allow her more room at top of boot! I also extend her looped buckle with another longer unit!

Use this top buckle with only a soft position and use the power strap more !

Like Bandit,,I am trying to gain a degree in skiing !

Still learning more and more,,thus realizing that I know so little about this sport !

As far as skis,,,yes they are cross country skis. There is a "slight" difference between alpine and cross country skis ! You fall more on alpine skis !!!

Hope you continue on your "education" of skiing in all its manifestations !

Respectfully,
Pavel

Wanderer,
Yes of course there is always other avenues, other points of view!

I think all slopes are great. All offer challenges. That is what skiing on some is "interesting" ! You never what will come up! A nice and easy section,,,,then fast fast steep icy parts and so on !
That is why you must concentrate at all times while skiing !

For me no slope in unwelcoming. You just have to find the way to ski it !

Yes nice soft snow is great,,,but imagine how you feel once you have mastered that icy section !

Wanderer, try all sorts of slopes. It will make you appreciate the special ones !

Will be thinking of you on White Heat this winter !!!

Mike,
Are those nice Atomics skis you have in the picture ?

Perhaps you are due for some serious Fischer skis ?

They are great on ice,,,

Tino's post made me consider again how much skiing is a mind activity.

That is,,,,,, how you think, what you think while skiing is so, so important !

The mind is really the central part of effective skiing!

Afraid of ice before skiing = tense hard unhappy skier.

Afraid of falling = tense, unhappy skier

Afraid of speed = leaning back, wild swinging hands, body rotation skier

In short,,you must prepare the mind FIRST before skiing with positive, nice, happy thoughts of your great ability, your success in life, your acceptance of challenges !

Then go down easy slopes runs, tale lessons ( not just for technique) but to make your mind accept that you can master this activity. That you will enjoy this SOON !

Let me give you an example of this from another context.

I teach a course which many people avoid ( like the plague ) until they have to take it to get a university degree ! It is statistical analysis.

80% of students feel they can not do it and are very very tense at first class!

I make them at ease by telling them that I failed algebra twice. So if a "poor" math student can become a lecturer in statistics , they can pass this course ! Success rate so far is is 90% !
Why ?

They believe in themselves.
They believe I will do anything to help them.

So it is in skiing ( like in marriage ) !
First you must believe in yourself that you can do it !
Then you must take steps to "learn" how to be a good wife/husband, skier, students !
Then the pleasure will come with each success !

So,,,,,enjoy in;
-handling that marriage
-passing by that ice while on skis
-finding the results of the varimax rotation in a factorial analysis
