I found that my boots I bought 3 years ago and had not worn for 2 seasons caused me a problem this year. I took them to get them stretched and thought this had done the trick, but sadly I experienced -
Loss of feeling in my toes The soles of my feet ached after about half an hour The ski hire shop in resort asked me why I was wearing thick socks? (they were Salomon ski socks) So I ended up removing the new insoles I had bought, loosening the clips, so I could adjust them more easily throughout the day and putting pads where the boots might rub on toes. This sort of worked! I need to get this sorted before next year as I had to rest every hour or so and take my boots off to get the feeling back in my feet. I know ski boots are not slippers but when they hurt, THEY HURT!! |
It is a village, and there are 3 ski areas. It is not the vast area that France is, and that is the reason so many people return year after year - it has that special Austrian 'Gemutlichkeit' - which if you have been to Austria you will understand! However this summer they are building a new gondola link over to Auffach which will double the size of the resort - I hope it does not spoil it.
Not everyone wants to ski miles and miles every day - Alpbach is nice and compact, everyone is very friendly, in all the shops and bars and hotels, the lift attendants and fellow skiers, and the tourist board are very helpful - and I for one was very sad to leave. Alpbach is very special, let's keep it that way! |
Well one point which alarmed us all was the transfer coach not having enough room for everyone's stuff, so 8 pairs of skis were piled in the aisles of the coach and bags placed in the emergency exit doors!
I could go on.. |
I have it on good authority from the people of Alpbach last week that Austria will have good snow right up to Easter - plenty of the white fluffy stuff fell last week and 4 days of sunshine! Guess who has the panda eyes!

For now I will say it is the first and probably the last time I will go with them, and begins with a 'C'.

I also forgot to mention, you get an Alpbach Seenland visitors card, free local transport on the ski bus, the Postbus to the local villages and the local train network. In the summertime the lifts are all free with this card.
Also the village has a good range of shops and facilities, including a good Spar, and an unusual souvenir shop that sold .. wait for it... goat's milk soap, potato handcream and grey cheese! Lots of other shops to buy souvenirs, clothing, ski stuff and ski hire shops, plenty of places to eat and highly recommend the Dorf Cafe for THE best cakes we have ever had in the Tirol!! Very good for families, couples, and those who like a more relaxed ski resort! :P |
Last week in Alpbach on the slopes I demolished (in no particular order and certainly not all on the same day!) Tiroler Grostls, chips, germknodels, Kaiserschmarrn, mini mars bars, Schwarzwalder Kirsch Torte, Peach flan cake, raspberry flan cake, Hazelnut cake of some glorious concoction, Almdudler by the crate load and enough hot cholates with cream to feed the Austrian Army! Yum yum pig's bum!! :D

I was in a different part of Austria and managed to avoid you  at Innsbruck Airport, as we left in the evening, delayed because of the problems with our flights coming out from the UK!
However, I had a lovely, lovely week as always in Austria and can't wait to go back! I guess it is horses for courses, and people like certain things, same with summer holidays and the very reason I avoid holiday resorts that serve English breakfasts, etc, etc. |
