It is those short, "simple" questions that often are most difficult to answer !
Let me try ! Is a longer ski harder to ski on ? You have to first ask yourself; -how do I ski -where do I ski -how fast do I ski I general a shorter ski is easier to turn,,,ie make short sharp SL type turns (how you do this is very very very important ) 90% of skiers "force" their turns with their upper torso ( that is called body rotation ) That is why many many beginner/intermediate skiers want short skis! There is a rule in skiing. Faster you ski more length you want ! longer skis= stability If you are going to an longer ski, you must; -be more gentle on edge sets -allow more time for ski to respond to your knee action -allow more safety distance The key reason you want is,,,yes it will make you a better skier, since it will require you to be "more effective"! The ski will require you to "ease" into a turn. It will teach you to "anticipate".. to look ahead and not make last minutes turns or stops ! I have 3 BBrs on loan right now and I am letting older skiers try them. Most skiers first have some "reservations" on strange color and shape, but once down easy slope love them! HINT****never never sit back on these. One tester had a near crash with lift chalet when at bottom he leaned back to turn ! Pavel |
Andy,
May I add the following ? I agree with you that enjoyment is the key,,,the very first condition we all desire while skiing! To me enjoyment comes by "being one with ski" ! That is the ski is an extension of my body! I think to turn and ski turns ! In short I am a "lazy skier" at my age ! I avoid all useless motions that have nothing to do with doing "effective skiing" ! I do not focus on "technique" while I ski. I never talk about technique while I ski ( unless someone asks for,,,,,) To me skiing against the terrain, against the ski, against the snow is not "enjoyable" ! As far as "competition" again you are so right! The beauty of skiing is that you establish what you want out of this activity! My groups are all +60 year old skiers because at this age you have no desire to see who will be first down, who will go into the deepest snow, who has longest/shortest most expensive ski! The only competition I have is with myself. I know when I am lazy, when I give up, when make a mistake ! In conclusion for me "effective" is not mutually exclusive with pleasure! It is a stepping stone to skiing happiness! I believe we all want to be "better" at what we do! There is a saying in the ski coaching world. "Nothing creates success better than success" You feel happy skiing well,,,,you feel want to come back! Andy,,what I would like to know is , "what is enjoymentt for you" ! For me it is the sun, the wind, freedom and soaring on snow ! I am sure it is also for you! Enjoy your 2012 ski season ! Pavel "the lazy skier" |

Andy Maxell has given some excellent advice about boot issues!
The first point ,,,,re putting too much pressure on buckles is so common with men ! With modern boots that are so well made, you do not have to tighten buckles so much that the shell is de-formed! Great advice ! Selection of correct socks is still very important! Thick wool socks is not the answer to cold feet ! Pavel |
Moogy offers another great choice! Banff is a great ski town.
Sunshine is unique with its top level ski chalet! One week at Sunshine,,sorry not for me! Norquay,,a one day ski resort! Lake Louise,,yes a week type ski center. Lots of slopes and great lifts! No hotels around, no food for miles ! Major storms now in lower BC. Avalanche danger ! Tell me when you will be there since I go there every two weeks with groups! |
Ski Racer,
One point I forgot to pass along. When you drill into the alu ,,remember to use a "tapping tool" which creates screw thread on the alu!! The ski tapping tool has a pre-determined thread type that all ski binding screws use! I love the Salomon driver bindings since they are so dependable and well built! You will notice that Salomon has re-introduced this type for all powder and park wide skis! Hope this helps you ! Pavel |
Lilywhite,
First WORK is not work when you love what you do ! You will see,,soon you will have all the time to do what you want! Practice those 5 above items! Then you can become like that Utah Instructor! Imagine a "second" career in skiing ! I am meeting all sorts of individuals who "discovered" skiing at a later age ( too busy making lots of money or trying to get that "prestige" title ) and all say they wished to discover the pleasure of skiing earlier! You have ! You are ahead of the "game" ! Cheers! Pavel |
Dave Mac, Tony,
As you ski more,,you realize how little you know! How nature always has new terrain, new conditions, new challenges. Yes those special days with special conditions last a lifetime! Hope for lots of powder! Just missed an avalanche with a group! We were 2 days before avalanche in the same area! Respect nature ! Have a great 2012 ski season ! Pavel |
I know a little about these resorts.
May I suggest first that you visit the western part of Canada, British Columbia would be your pick! Two weeks means you do not want to stay in one place,,one resort! May I suggest Panorama for its varied terrain, off-piste tree skiing and possibility to heli-ski on Thursdays. Heli pad is at base and many skiers get too tired on Thursday thus free seats ( well at a low cost ) ! The second week could be at. Revelstoke , Big White or Kicking Horse ! Fernie is a great ski resort for powder skiing but not for a week !!!! Yes January and February are cold months ( mind you this year they are warm months coming ) Best time is late February early March ! Try Sportvac Tours for prices. Call or email ( see site ) Julien and tell him Pavel recommended you for best prices! You will get them ! Pavel |
