Dobby,

It will be strange what follows,,,but trust me when you feel this "state" you will understand !

At one speed level in skiing,,,,,when you are in your groove,,,,in your ski zone,,,it seems that all goes into a slow dimension !

Yes of course the trees are whizzing by.
Yes of course you feel the wind.
Yes of course those skiers seem to be standing still

but you are feeling calm !

Every small, slow movement of your body creates a change in skis!

The secret in getting into this state is to allow skis to flow. Never set hard edges,,,be gentle with all your turns!

The faster you go,,,,the more gentle soft you must be with all your "actions" That is more a state of mind. Thus you must feel comfortable at this state!

Trust me,,,it seems that everything slows down!

How to get to this state.
Start at top,,your head. Strange but you must relax to let skis flow,,,ride for you!

At core level ( torso ) again be relaxed to adjust for all changes.

At thighs level do not feel any tension..just tight muscles WITH ski dynamics! Never but never forcing ski to do radical moves!
At warp speed in skiing it is all about "anticipation, patience and ski touch "

At boot level it is all about forward forward and more forward pressure!

1 /100 second back on heels and ski will go into hyper speed !

Not recommended!

Finally,,remember there are others on this slope so safety is essential !

In some resorts they have closed racing slopes. You can ask to ski such slopes under supervision ! You will never sate that you ski too slow once you have done a "free speed" run !

Be careful,,it is addictive !

Hope this helps you !

AllG,
Wait till you place these elastics. You will discover another plus.

May I suggest you make the lope,,the ring just long enough to go around your gloves. In this manner the elastic will go around with little pressure around wrists !

After one day you will discover that hidden pleasure !

Have a great day skiing!

Iceman has such a "active " mind !
Full of questions and solutions.

That pole strap is a very interesting point !

Ski equipment and design has a history of slow change. Case in point those pointed old old wooden tips ! Next time you see an old non-metal edge ski..look at tip and you will will see a 10mm tip sticking out ! The old dinosaur skiers call them "ski nipples" ( sorry Dave for historical honesty I had to use thus term ) !

Can anyone tell me why it was there?

Can anyone remember that groove in the middle of a ski base ? What was its function ?

Now back to those pole straps ?

Icemen is very wise and perceptive. They had a function many years ago but now are not really needed! For that past 10 years I have taken out my nylon/leather pole straps off since I do lots of skiing in woods and have had poles caught in branches, resulting in near shoulder separation. Now I instal thick elastics,,with a slip knot. You can buy these elastics in sewing stores or such !

Easy to install, Easy to use. Safe !
Problem with such stories is,

"what is God saying when a skier with ski helmet dies" ! Several skiers have died with helmets on, in fact there is now a famous video of one such death on You Tube !

Yes,,it is up to each person to decide!

Oh,,,,by the way more people die in Spas than while skiing !
What is God telling us now !!!!
An inspiration to all you adolescents.

At a recent industry conference an man called Klaus Obermeyer was interviewed!

Here is a "sample" of this 90+ year old skier;

You recently turned 92. What drives you?
If you're physically in good condition and you work out, life can be very good until a late age. I do all of this because it's fun. To ski is fun. To swim is fun. To bike is fun. If you can combine working out everyday with something that's fun instead of being in a gym, then what a lucky thing that is. It feels good to be healthy.

Do you plan on slowing down?
No. I wouldn't know what to do if I slowed down.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to ski everyday when they are 92?
Don't eat more than you burn off. Try to figure out what kind of food works well for you and is easily digestible, and drink lots of water. And stay active. You can still build muscles when you're my age, but you lose them faster if you don't use them.

Just don't eat too much and keep changing what you eat. It'll be more enjoyable.

So you never have a good beer anymore?
Very rarely. Coming from Bavaria originally, I think it's a sin though. They raise their babies on beer instead of milk. But water is the best thing you can drink.

Note the stress on fun!
If you ever ski with him,,,or see him ski you will notice that broad smile !

That is the secret,,,,to have fun !

One hint ,,,,while all the younger skiers are away trying to make money,,,who is on the slopes?

Live to ski,,,,,,Ski to live !
I get so many "suggestions" from watching children in beginner slopes!
Here is another "lesson" you can practice at home before going skiing!

The poles!

To many skiers they are "cumbersome" !
To many skiers ( like Trencher ) they are not necessary!
To many skiers they are "dangerous"

You must practice using them. Taking them off ! Holding them. Moving them about without stabbing others, yourself and losing them !

There is a "art" to manipulating them with thick gloves, in cold windy days!

I am sure you all know the correct way to use those straps ! All kids were taught the "rabbit into the hole " procedure !

Learn to carry them with skis!
Learn to place them in chair !
Learn to lift them just before top ,,,so they will not be bent!
Learn never to place then BETWEEN your skis as you get off chair!
Learn NOT to push hard while in ski lines,,,,slip and spear the skier behind !
Learn to take up lost of space,,with poles so persons will not push ahead while in lift line.
Learn to "casually" place ski tip IN FRONT of skier (between his/her boots) trying to pass ahead in lift line.
Learn to place both ski poles handles horizontally in front of a small child that is getting on chair ( many children fall off at this phase of the lift ).
Learn NOT to have poles sticking out 1 meter to the side as you ski!
Learn how to use poles to get up on slope!

And now the final one,,,,,never but never point the poles forward,,,that is have pole tip in front of you as you ski down!

Why ?

If you fall,,,and you will that pole tip will go into snow,,,the pole handle will punch you in the face/teeth/nose etc,,,, ! Keep pole tips pointing back towards heels and only quickly bring forward when turning ( as Trencher would say,,,,,that is optional )

Practice pole actions at home first !
