Ski racers and recreational skiers have different goals!

Ski racers want to win above all! They will do anything and everything to get that less .001 second !

Recreational skiers want to have fun ! Want to enjoy the skiing experience !

Yes we can learn from racers,,but when I ski I do not have racing poles in mind, pre-determined race course in mind,,getting that .oo1 second off the course! I allow my skis to find best line, find that softest snow, look for that best view, look for that steepest zone,,,,, Pleasure is my goal !

In short I want freedom to soar !

Do I think of using the fastest line to get down the slope ? Never ( well sometimes,,to be honest ) !

I want that "experience" to last as long as possible ! I once skied with a young skier who just skied down straight ( the "how many runs can I do in a day " attitude ) ! While I was going up with him I mentioned, "you paid a lot for this ski lift ticket,,,,,why not make the most of it by skiing ALL the slope rather than just 2 meters of it ? "

The goal of skiing is pleasure. Carving is one of the ways to get this pleasure ! It is not a goal in itself !

In powder skiing carving is very secondary,,,,Floating,,is the ultimate pleasure in skiing!

Back to my slopes,,,,,,

Seems to be a lot of "students" doing "research in the design field in England !

I remembered reading an article about "what is good design" ! Hope it helps some students before they consider their "research" ! Hope some design lecturers read this also!

Good Design;[i]

is innovative

makes a product useful

is aesthetic,,,ie beautiful

makes the product understandable. It short it makes the product talk!

is unobtrusive ( neutral and restrained)

is honest ( does what it is supposed to do )

is long lasting

is thorough down to last detail

is environmental friendly

Note last one,,,,,

Good design is as little design as possible !

Know these and you have passed any course in design in any country !

With great respect to design students,

Watch carefully the GS and SL ski racers,,,,if possible in slow motion !

Two point,,, ( among others)

1. In GS world cup level,,but also top level national skiing,,a "control drift" or side drift is practiced and done just before a gate! This is to align skis to angle of best attack for next gate! All skiers should learn to do this type of "drift" !

2. In SL type racing where course is steep and gates close there is also just a "drift" but it is so fast and brief that few ever see this! Racers do practice this also!

For everyday skiers ,,rare is the person who can do a "perfect" carve all day from top to bottom on slope! That is why good skiers learn the "ski touch" ! That is knowing how to play with your edges according to slope terrain, slope surface condition, and desired ski performance!

You have to enjoy skiing,,so why constantly strive to 100% carving just to show others that you,,,,,

In conclusion,,,in my opinion rare is the skier who carves 100% ! So boring to do so !
Let the skis go,,,,once in a while ! That is soaring!!!
spring snow?

Verbier,

I dream of "spring snow" for many reasons!

First let tell you about this magical snow! It is an a "butterfly" going through its stages ! That snow varies very 30 minutes and how the slope surface faces the sun! This type of snow separates the neophyte skiers from the "experienced" skiers since you must change you skiing style/technique as the day "flows" and you must change your skiing also depending where you ski relative to sun!

Morning 9 AM Fast fast hard surface with great long cruising runs

Morning 11 AM Softer snow for fast cruising surface but watch out,,,,one mistake and off you go! Edges dig deeper! Shadows is the spot to ski till 12 !

1 PM Now the fun begins! Most skiers are having sore legs. Slopes are "variable" with clumps here and there. Edges are still uniform and steeps are great with soft moguls! Time to "blast ski" !
What you do not know what "blast ski is " ????

90 % of skier go into "sheep" mode,,,following tracks of every other skiers,,creating paths with moguls here and there! These are special moguls! All soft wet snow and if you know what to do you can have fun !

Avoid the skier paths ,,rather ski from the tops to one mogul to other mogul,,,blasting through them on their tops! You will see thousands of ice crystals as you land on top of moguls! A shower of snow/water /ice crystals after every turn !

By 2 PM few skiers on slopes! None in the steeps! Time to really try steeps since wet snow acts as a perfect braking mechanism !

3-4 PM Danger period when weak legs, poor fitness will cause many falls!
Even less skiers! great to explore those narrow hidden places!

5 PM Time for "younger skiers" to buy Coronas for the old bulls still standing!
Time to share in that perfect ski day!

That is Spring Snow at its best !

Hope to see you at 5 PM someday !!!

Alex,
Sorry forgot most important!

Look up;

"Handbook in Research,,,,,,,," by Stephan Isaac ! Small thin old green book but a treasure about research ! Much better than Google !

You will love it ,,especially chapter 3 on questionnaires!

Will save you lots of time and impress your teacher !!!!

Alex,

Answered your survey.

May I suggest the following;

Read your intro text. Researcher should never bias subject at onset! You did with, "Too much bending down,,,,,"!
Problem = adjustment, loosen, off boots too heavy to walk ,,,,,

What is specific goal of research ?
To design new boots?
To modify older boots?
To evaluate skier satisfaction,,,,

Have your teacher help you "define" your project before presenting to questionnaire !

Then before you do present questionnaire make sure you know how you will analyse date !
Descriptive statistics!
Inferential statistics !

Need more planning of your project before presenting to public!

Who is your teacher ?
What is your course code ?

Now if you want a great unique project that will be far above all others,,,try looking into ;
a GPS embedded unit in skis
a self waxing unite within the ski
a variable vibration damping unit within ski like Volk
10 modifications to modern ski boot to increase fit
interface possibilities with phone or GPS unit with ski or boot

Alex, read up on designing survey questionnaires and sampling techniques before doing this!

You are in the world net thus the information you gather is as relevant as the persons answering this questionnaire. Need more info on participants!

Key slogan in all research! JUNK IN = JUNK OUT !!!

All this information you will get from all sorts of skiers has a value,,,you must determine how much is "junk" !

Enjoy your study !

Can you post results,,,,or at least your grades on this project !

May I finish with this quote,,,,
"The formulation of a problem is far more essential than the solution, which may be merely a matter of experiential skill. To raise a new question, new possibilities, to regard old problems in a new light THAT is the essence if research "

Take the time to define that new question !

Respectfully,
A researcher

Tito,
Yes too long!

What model?
What year ?

The rule of thumb is the following;

beginner = tip at chin
Intermediate = tip at nose
Expert SL = 165 cm. 170 cm
Expert GS = 180 + cm
Expert Powder = 185 cm. and + 100 mm foot
Expert Alaska/Utah powder = 190 cm. and +110 mm foot

Hope this helps some of you !

It is great to be mad at least for a week !
