A true Spring Skiing story !
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 12 Replies
Many years ago, when my sons were young ( 10-12 ) I began a "ski bum" expedition tradition where for two weeks we would ski! We would leave home not knowing where we would ski and just follow the sun and the snow !
At that time I have a Ford Econoline 12 seater van! I took seats out, put in bed mattresses, and voilĂ  had place to sleep !

As my sons got older ,,they insisted in continuing the tradition ! This was one of those trips !

But first,,you all must promise,,,I mean really promise never to tell my sons that I "passed" along this story to you since they are all "important" management types in multinational companies and,,,,,

Nicholas was 19 and Sasha was 17 and we were with 5 other older great great skiers

We are in one large well know ski resort and it is late April ( this was when there was lots of snow all winter ) ! Great +10c sunny day and we are skiing down a steep narrow run that few skiers take ! We are a serpent one after another following perfect curves !

We get to bottom and my son Nicholas says, " dad,,dad,,did you see those girls" ?
"What girls" I replied ! Seems I was so busy concentrating on my run,,I missed 15 girls tanning ( in various levels of dress) on some rocks !

We had a quick group discussion and off we went again to this secluded run,,,,!
This time I let my son lead ! At a steep section sure enough there were the girls,,,but they were prepared for us ! As we passed them,,,,they all turned their backs to us,,,,bent over and,,,,,,,,, ( sorry Dave is reading this also,,so I let you imagination roam about in that general area close to the donkey ) !!!

At bottom another group conference!
Our male egos were "challenge" ! Our male identities questioned ! We could not let this pass !

What to do!

My son ( which surprised me) came up with a proper "reply" to that gesture !

Here is what we did!

Remember it was late April. It was +10 to +20 c and we were skiing in shorts and T-shits!

At top in this quiet secluded ski run,,,we stripped!!! One person took all our material.

We skied fast,,very fast in a line down this run and at the very place the girls were,,,,,we did a huge "across slope turn" so that we were coming straight for them!

First there was a silence,,,,then cheers,,, calls,,, laughing,,,whistling, more cheers,,,,and as we passed them,,,you could hear the echos in the valley !

Never saw my sons ski so fast and so gracefully !
Never saw such grins on their faces!
Saw how happy they were !

A ski holiday their mother never knew what happened,,but two days later she did mention that the boys "seemed" different ! More sure of themselves !
She asked, "did anything happen on the ski trip" ?

I just smiled and replied with a soft,,,,"lots" !

She knew not to ask what !

That is what Spring skiing does!

There has been so much snow falling in western Canada and so few skiers going to these ski resorts that some resorts are offering great great deals !

Just saw Big White Ski Resort offering free skiing and lodging in April if you book via their services!

Never heard of this type of deal ever !

Time to pack ski bags,,,,,

The imagination and divergent thinking of smart people always astounds me !

Great video !

My suggestion still stands,,,with one addition !

At end of ski day all skiers evaluated by Old Andy must pay him a beer !

Now I have a long term project for you Andy ! If Dave accepts this proposal and the J2SKI skier evaluation form becomes a "benchmark in UK ( and all over the world in 2020 ) ,,,,then you must "train " younger persons to pass along your "expertise" !

In the coming months we will have to get "models" via You Tube or pictures of each skier level so that younger evaluators will be able to use these as "references" !

I have several which I can pass along to you !

Dave,
If this classification becomes "official" site,,then all skiers will know it!
For clarifications ,,we can all refer to the sage,,Old Andy!

When two J2skiers are in same resort,,one could evaluate other!
( this will create a trip group evaluation attitude)
(this will create a desire to improve)
( this will create a "group J2ski affiliation " )

I can see it now in 2020 a world wide meeting of all J2skiers at XXXXX resort to be evaluated by Old Andy ( sitting in a "judges" bench at mid point in a slope )
Numbered cards in hand like in figure skating !

In cases of "litigation" a You Tube viewing by Old Andy can solve issue !

He will be our judge/ evaluation guru ! If he accepts!

I will print diplomas and sent them to you !

I am sure others will have more suggestions !

Respectfully,
Pavel

May I suggest to Dave ( the site Guru ),,,The man lurking behind all this text who is responsible for this wonderful site;

-print Old Andy's classification in a unique place in site
-this classification becomes the J2ski skier classification
-on profiles section that a self evaluation be included
- "progress reports " be available every year

Finally to reach the 3 top parts ( classifications ) a J2skier must demonstrate his/her skills to another j2skier on slopes ( evaluation sessions before beer sessions )!

I will produce free of charge an official "certificate" signed by Dave for anyone who reaches the top three levels. You realize that this is the first world wide standard skier evaluation system ever established !

Who will be the first one to get this "certificate" ?

Look up this "survival board" for the man/women who has everything!

Gadgets galore,,,http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2LYABs/www.gizmag.com/motorcycles/

I am serious !

The oh,,God response means,,,,"yes you can make a poster of those classifications" !!!

Several minds are always better than one,,,,if each accepts to learn from others !

Dave Mac,
I will not ask you to "identify" the "odd" J2skier ! (well not in public) !

The mystery continues,,,,,

Old Andy,

You are right. The more "broad" you make categories,,the more you lose in precision!

I like yours better than mine! If you do not mind I will adopt yours! Do you mind if a soon to be made poster has all your suggestions? ( Of course your name will be at bottom)

You see Old Andy, I have a friend who will open a very "special" ski shop and he wanted a poster near entrance which would help customers identify themselves!

Your profiles are much better than mine,,thus I will recommend to him to use yours! What is your fee for this excellent work ?

Thanks for your thoughts!
