Bandit,
The observation from Jan about the first turn is crucial to becoming an effective skier! At the top of the run it is not too crucial for "other" skier since you are just starting the run. Now imagine you are on an expert run cruising along, here comes a turn,,then a drop,,a real drop! What do you have? 5-10 skiers stopped and lined up ACROSS ski run looking at where to go! A conference is called and if you have couples, the husband is telling the wife where to go! She just wants to take skis off and walk! By this time you have 1 meter between group and woods or cliff! What is more important, I tell all skiers is not the steep section. It is the run off! That zone below the steep section! The run off is your parachute! It is the safety valve which allows you to ride out the speed! So if you have the courage( or stupidity) or technique to take steep section straight down it is the run off section that will save you! Stop looking at the steep section! Look at the zone below it! Trust your skis (if they are well tuned), trust yourself and take the fall line! Stop being the bird on the line! Soar instead! Now back to those letters! 7 letters but really 4 since some a repeated! Find That Position In Place Then Finish.... |

There is no doubt that many many skiers have this, "first turn" problem.
As you mentioned often it is a "mental" issue since in steep sections you have to allow ski to go down fall line, yet fall line means speed = fear! I reminds me of a frequent skiing SIN that you see often! I call it the "birds on the wire" problem! Here is the context. In Lake Placid there is a top run used for the downhill which starts with a very steep drop! From the top of the chairlift there is a "cat walk" about 2 meters wide which leads to intermediate runs. However the "expert" run is right off the chairs and remember there is no room to "chat"! You still get 5-10 "expert"skiers on the top of the lip, of the run looking where to go! Trying to decide where the first turn will be! Were there is just a little less ice. Where it seems to be alright to "turn"! Meanwhile,, like in the Charlie Chaplin movie,,the goods are coming up and piling up in this section! The longer you wait and think of what and where to go the the less it seems you will survival that first 15 meters of free fall! The problem you bring up Jan is there! When I ski with my sons and we are going up this chair to this run,,we know what we will see, "birds on the wire" all lined up at the lip! Chirping!!!! This way! That way!!! No NO which way! We plan our moves on the chair! We decide who will go first and right away it is fall line! The most dangerous is the first 3 meters. Not because of the steepness, but because as you noted many skiers go "traverse" in the steeps! They wipe out or "skid" those first few meters! Yes that first turn is the key turn! Now back to that damm FTPIPTF !!!!! Face The Possibility I Planned This Form....... No? |

I do no know how it is with other couples, but in my home you DO NOT talk to wife until she has had her coffee and then 5 minutes!
I have had my coffee! My brain is now engaged and I have called some of my friends who worked on various computer codes! I presume this is in English! I presume is it a sentence or sequential linquistic order I presume it has to do with skiing I presume it is related to your message I presume it is logical Mikem did you notice 2 Fs 2 Ts 2 Ps One just one I Now if we were to refer to Jung's book "The Unsconscious Symbols of the Mind",,,the I (alone) of course represents Jan! The 2 Fs (and note they are at very beginning and very end of the sequence) represent First and Finish which of course are two concepts which are fore-most in Jan's mind! The two Ts are also very symmetrical since they are second and second last in sequence! According to Jung they are Trust and Truth! Again very important values Now did you notice at the Ps are also in a set sequence( just between the famous I) The Ps are close to the I, just next to it. We did say that the I represented Jan, thus of course the P letters are "perseverance" and patience! Two personality qualities well know for this man! ( his wife might not agree....but that is another story) What does this have to do with skiing! Not sure? Back to the lab! FF TT PP I PP TT FF Do you all see how t I is t center of the squne How the letters "rotate" around the I axis? I am getting to be like Mike!!! |

I have programmed my computer to open to this site every morning! As the coffee is brewing, I get my intellectual stimulation from the many excellent question posted.
This time I did not even get my coffee! FTPIPTF ???? A code? Face That Pole In Perfect Turns Faster or Forward Then Pass In Powerful Turns Forever or Fast Turns Perhaps Involve Power Truth Faith Ok OK stop laugthing Jan,, I will get my coffee and think of this FTPIPTF sequence! I got it !!! I got it!!! Forget That Push Instead Pole Through Fast No? I suspect it will be a long day ,,,,Mike help me! |
Ise,
Just viewed your excellent pictures. May I ask, what camera do you have? Keep pictures coming! I use the Tubes TD 91 model shoes. They are smaller that typical shoes but you do not have to walk with "wide" stance! I have a malemut dog that just loves to lead, when ever I go out for "walk"! |
Dave,
I must confess, I did hesitate sharing my baby wipes technique with all of you! I have had several comments about it, but once you do it ( yes it takes some courage) your feet will never be like Jan's!!! I must now confess that I do take the travel baby wipe box and place all sorts of ski stickers on it! So unless you are a "new mother" you have no idea what they are! I promise to get away from the wax fumes for a while Dave! I still have those damm fish images! Cheers. |
Mickey,
So we have a university man here! imagine all those years in university , learned about Freudian theory, Black Holes, String Theory and standard deviations yet not about ski socks! What are out universities doing? How can you graduate from university and not know about ski sock design! OK let us help Mickey "integrate" into skiing! Let us see how many relationships we can find between fish and skiing! 1. Modern ski bases for cross-country have a fish scale like base to allow to "kick"! 2. Fish like skiers have a double eye set up to protect eyes. We have gogles. 3.Hexcel skis once introduced a very "wild" ski with a fish tail design! 4.In the 70's in the Spring, American skiers( in California) would eat live fish at end of ski day! The record set was 50 live fish! 5.One of the major snowboard companies has a fish logo! I seem to have several fish stickers, but I do not know which company! Help!!! 6.Sardines are a great "survival" option if you are lost in the woods while skiing. No serious skier who does "back-country" leaves without at least one can of sardines! 7. Stein Erickson, who is ski school Director at Deer Valley offers a great fish and lobster dinner everyday at base of center. For a just $8 you have as much sea food as you can eat! ( without taking skis off)! 8.Fish fossils have been found on the top Snowbird Ski resort! All tower work had to be stopped while "specialist" took out the fossil! Help help I want to reach 10..... Think all of you! FISH and SKIING!!!! Of course of course,,the most obvious!! 9. We have Mickey who soon will be an expert fish skier! One more one more FISH SKI FISH SKI!!! |
