Where is all the snow?

Bleak. Well, last summer in Switzerland (and I heard in many parts of Europe) was the worst since records began with no week passed without two days of pouring rain at least so won't be a huge surprise if it's followed by the worst winter of a stable high pressure ... It's raining/trying to snow in GVA now, but it's not the kind of rain/snow that is likely to dump any significant amount in the mountains, a cm at best. I remember the weather we had during big snow storms of 2-3 season ago and it's nowhere near that at the moment.
I am not sure i want to look anymore, every time i check the forecast the estimation has gone down. I am just glad i have a week with the family first so i don't actually ski till the 28th

Watching the snow cannons and piste people, via webcam, working hard in La Rosiere and La Thuile to get something open for the weekend. Nothing at village level in La Thuile and a dusting of new snow across La Rosiere. But from a bright morning, some threatening clouds are rolling in. Nothing in the forecast, but that's been way off with its snow predictions for at least a fortnight!

Just had a look at the Zermatt website, and they are stating 213km open out of a total of 360km and 40 no. out of 54 no. lifts. Not too bad all things considered. Not that much new snow in the forecasts although we have 17 days still to go. I'm glad we opted for the new year rather than Christmas week.....
slippy slidey snow......me likey!

Hi Jonesy
Don't worry you will have a fab time in Gastein.
Always plenty of snow at Sportsgastein but the lift company will only open if there are enough skiers about to make it worthwhile! Come this Saturday the car park will be full and you'll realise the folly of needless worry.
Just had our photos developed from last Easter at Dorf - by far the most beautiful resort in the eastern alps in my opinion

La Rosiere have announced they are not going to open this week and will delay to 20 December. bummer for us as we are heading there on Saturday. As far as I can see they are the only resort in the Tarentaise that is not opening at least partially...

La Rosiere looks white on the webcams but it is only a dusting and although the guns are working, it's clearly not enough to get anything going just yet. Iainm you have my sympathy.
