For something different, try Lake Bled in Slovenia, or Montenegro (Kotor or pretty much anywhere for that matter), spectacular scenery.

Go back to France and try Val D'Allos, there is Lac D'Allos at 2000m, ice driving in the winter, and great walks in the summer.

Thank you to everyone that's been helping me.

I'm now battling with myself. We've decided on Lake Garda. Either Malcesine or Peschiera, the former being in the mountains (which is what I originally wanted) the latter being walking distance to a train that goes into Verona and Venice.

I sooooo want the mountains and Malcesine looks perfect but Verona and Venice... :?

We may be heading there this year to go sailing. Possibly mounting a determined campaign to come last in the Laser 4000 Europeans.

Verona is a beautiful city, but Venice is just one of those really special places. I could go again and again and again. Its incredible.

thanks Tony. I think we may go for it, Interlaken came into the equation too and it all got a bit confusing.

Resort with a lake is Bohinj (Slovenia) with Lake Bohinj too.
Vogel ski centre is above Lake Bohinj (and inside Triglav National Park),
and from Kobla ski centre you can see Bohinj Lake too.:
