Hi Dave, sorry one more question
i am looking at Ischgl as a possible plan b, looks to be about 45 mins from St Anton, or a 200 Australian $ return cab so while i would pay that in a heartbeat rather than not ski do you know of any cheaper options

Not sure what I would do.......depends on your amount of free time, your budget, your dedication, your friends, your other options. Too many variables.
I would say bin the holiday and go heli-skiing in Canada in January - but such things may not be possible/desirable/affordable.
Aghh - Dave updated his post with same cut and paste.
p.s. 14 day forecast does indeed look shite for that area.

DO keep up John! (Have I said that to you before???)
OK, according too aa route planner, St Anton to:
Obergurgl ~ 1 hr 30min
Solden ~ 1hr 15min
Kuhtai ~ 1hr 8min
Stubai ~ 1 hr 45 min
Not an exact science, but a good indicator. And, of course, the roads will be clear!

Thanks Dave Mac & Munich_Johnny, booked via booking.com and as far as i can tell we would be up for 90%.
the initial reason for my 1st trip back to Europe since i left the UK in 98 was to see family so adding a weeks skiing was a bonus. going to sit on things for a while and have another look at our options closer to the time, we fly out of Sydney tomorrow and have a week in Hungary with family so i will keep an eye on things. I can ski most things and my wife is confident on Aussie blue slopes so we can at least head high for the better conditions. Ischgl seems a reasonable option if St Anton is a write off. if not we just bite the bullet and fly from Zurich to somewhere with better snow or even get a train from Budapest.
the Hotel is the Hotel Sailor, they have one in innsbruk but i am not sure that's any better.
i have skied in Australia in September so i am no stranger to crap snow.
Thanks again for the heads up, my requirements are White and downhill, i may have to go for slightly off white and downhill

If you going to Innsbruck you might want to look at Kuhtia http://www.bergfex.com/kuehtai/webcams/ . Just over an hour from Innsbruck and some reasonable skiing.

If you decide not to go to St Anton you might have problems finding accommodation in places that have snow.
I think you will have to look further afield than the Austrian resorts mentioned above, if you want some halfway decent snow. All of the resorts that have a reasonable amount of snow are to the south of the main alpine ridge (the blue line on the map below), if you want to stay in Austria have a look at Obergurgl-Hochgurgl. Bear in mind that if any weather does arrive you might end up being on the wrong side of the ridge.
Austria has a pretty good public transport system you don't really need to use taxis except perhaps for short journeys, Rome2Rio is pretty good for basic planning https://www.rome2rio.com/
At moment the hotels in the Austrian resorts are still well booked for Christmas / New year, there have been very few cancellations and they seem to think that they will have enough snow http://tirol.orf.at/news/stories/2684224/
If you're flying into Zurich you could go to Zermatt or Saas Fee, although finding accommodation will be difficult.

There is a decent amount of snow in Zermatt with 70% of the pistes now open. Pretty similar over in Cervinia. I imagine booking this late would cost a packet though.
slippy slidey snow......me likey!
