Simple solutions if you are driving: dont go at such busy times, and avoid the notorious roads as suggested.
Driving overnight reduces times substantially.
Avoiding Munich and much of Bavaria is also a good idea.
There are some non motorway routes into Austria which can be just as bad though.

Ever thought about flying.......??????

We drive for £500 return. Fly for £1600 for a family of four at half term. We rented an apartment (2 bedroomed) for £400. Whole half term holiday for £2400 all in (inc kids ski school, ski rental, lift passes and meals/spending etc). That's why we drove. I have taken on board the busy times, but as another person said, Belgium, Holland, some Eastern Europe and Germans all need to drive through Germany. I just blogged to give information and warn others. Thanks anyway.

Have drove to Austria many times from the uk normally choosing to do the north sea ferry crossing from Hull to Rotterdam. The onwards route is normally to head towards Arnheim > Duisburg > Koln > Frankfurt > Wurzburg > Munich > Austria. The route is approx 100km from Rotterdam Europort to the Tirol & takes approx 9.5hrs.
This year because of some unplanned travel changes, we were forced to do the Belgium > Luxemburg > Struggart > Munich > Tirol route & I can confirm that this route is definetly slower. Granted we had terrible weather to contend with but the 1000km journey took an incredible 18hrs.
Is this a record?

Trough France is faster, trough Germany - cheaper.
I like this map http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/ Gives you the toll charges as well :) You wasted time but you saved around 100 pounds.

You have omitted the lost time spent:

Queueing for check in

Queueing for the ritual humiliation that is airport security

Queueing to board

Queueing at Immigration on arrival, since you are from a non Schengen country

Waiting for luggage to arrive, assuming it got loaded on the plane

Waiting for coach to resort/queueing to get hire car

et al.....
