Ski Engelberg

I am going to Engelberg on the 6th March staying in the Hoheneck.

Have any of you guys got any info or personel opinions on resort,hotel,skiing,apres ect.
For the first time I am looking to hire boots & skis,due to boots worn beyond repair & ski carriage
with BA being expensive, my skis are 10yr old carvers in good condition but now maybe a good time to try a more advanced ski.

If I do go for hire on skis any advice to what would be a good all round ski.
Went to Gerlos last year & TBH found the conditions very hard work due to it snowing heavily every night & piste bashers not able to cope leaving the runs like moguls all week,maybe a more advanced ski would have handled the conditions better.

As I have seen posted on here skis can be booked online to lower the cost, this site only lists one outlet THE 4 SEASONS & an online search of other companies brings you back to this shop as well so is it the only hire shop in Engelberg? any help on this as well please as this shop seems expensive even with the discount.

Brooksy, there are a few ski hire shops in Engelberg village, and at least a couple at the base of the Titlis Gondola station. I was not too impressed with the ones in the village, but I have used the Stockli Test Centre at the base of the Titlis Gondola, which was very good. The other shop, which I think is part of Intersport looked to be pretty well stocked.

I would suggest that hiring at the base of the lift will be easier because you can leave your kit in the pay lockers underneath the gondola, which avoids hauling them around on the skibus.

I had a good time in Engelberg, I believe that Tino had a blast. The resort has plenty of devotees.

Good quality on mountain eating, and the biggest apres ski parties are at the Yucatan :D

I've been to Engelberg a few times for short breaks etc; excellent resort for quick access from Zurich and Lucerne. Don't know what the hotel is like, the reviews on TripAdvisor mention Basil Fawlty but the last was in 2007!

If I remember correctly there is a good ski hire shop, Titlis-Sport (www.titlis-sport.ch), in the main cable car station. It has the great advantage of being able to leave your skis and boots there and not lug them while walking or on the very regular and efficient ski bus service.

The Stockli ski shop is also close to the main lift and railway station and lots of people hire from them. (http://en.stoeckli.ch/main/locations/engelberg/)

Thank you both for your info & it looks as if stoeckli is recommended by both of you so will go for that option.
As I have no idea of the layout there do you have to go up the Titlis every time to ski the area or are there other lifts up,the reason I am asking is I don't wont to have my skis left there in case the group with me decide on going somewhere else at late notice ( like 8am ).

As for the Basil Fawlty type accom it should suit most of the guys as they have an uncanny resemblance
to the guests in the show especially the welsh one.

The Titlis gondola is the sole access for the main area so leaving your skis there is not a problem unless you decide to go for the Brunni - a small, sunny area that does not tend to have great snow later in the season.

As the others already have mentioned - Stöckli is the best place to rent skis close to the base station. Service-minded and professional.

If you are looking to head off-piste, I can also really reccommend Okey Shop in the basement of Hotel Bellevue. Dani has a good slection of K2 skis, midfat to superfat, and is a supernice guy that will guide you right.

For Apres, Yucatan next to the station will have the biggest crowds for sure. For good food on the mountain, the waited restaurants at Jochpass, and Skihütte at Stand are the best.

The snow so far has been really good this year, and we received another 20 yesterday night.

Thanks for the new replies, as said in my post is it best to book skis & boots online or sort it out at the resort,sorry I have no idea when it comes to equipment hire.
