Used to cycle 1000's of miles a year (road and MTB) and started wearing a lid as soon as they became available. (Anyone remember those awful polystyrene lumps with a lycra skin?) Wouldn't cycle without one now. Oddly have never crashed on my head. Face, shoulders and back plenty of times but not head? It just seemed that even if you're pretty good the odds will catch up with you eventually. I didn't enjoy the helmet and felt much better without it but the compromise seemed sensible.

I do NOT wear one for skiing. It's my one week away from procedures, risk assessments, and petty rules. The one week of just me, nature, physics and quite literally the wind in my hair.

I accept the "fact" that I may be safer with a lid. I would also be safer if I went "skiing" on a computer game and never left the house, but that's my choice.

I've lost one sport (pistol target shooting) to knee-jerk legislation, I'd hate skiing to go the same way.

The "immortal when wearing a lid" attitude was also seen in many cyclists for a week or so when they started wearing lids, but is seemed to wear off as soon as they crashed again!

Just my opinion though.

Owen.

Yeah but you'd probably die of obesity and myocardial infarction by you're 50!

strange last post.

In reply to Ian Wickham, I always kept my kids between hubby and me and have nagged and nagged them about piste safety. However they are now MILES better than us and we hold them back! For the last 2 yrs I have allowed them to go in front of us. (They are, however, now 17 and 13) This yr for the first time I allowed them to go up to the top together and come down, without us when we were just knackered at the end of the day. They were given strict instructions to stay together, be careful, keep a constant look out for "idiots" and if one fell and was injured, they were to call someone over to stay with the injured party while the other one skied very slowly down to inform us. I have NEVER let them do that, but in fairness they enjoyed far better skiing this yr as I gave them more freedom. (They both wear helmets and have never moaned or questioned it, the same when cycling)

Yep I certainly agree with that 17 & 13 should be resonably reponsible, but I do see too many kids
who are 10 and under skiing unsupervised ..... who given a few years are tomorrows idiots.
When is your next trip ???
and you can call me wickers :D

Lol Thank you Wickers. And you can call me DD lmao. (That's not my name tho, but I shan't broadcast it here!) We've just got back on 22nd Wickers, so sadly no more skiing until next yr :(

I too am amazed at the actions of some kids, and when mine were younger I made them stay with us all the time even tho I WAS holding them back. Watching them ski now makes me so very proud. (My son is on my profile picture) They are excellent skiers and they've only had one lot of lessons! I have to give them a little more freedom now as they are twice as good as we are, and my daughter, 17 is EXTREMELY sensible. Some kids are downright dangerous and I don't know how their parents can go off and ski and not be worried to death!

But describing someone as looking like they are on day release. Poor taste. Nuff said.

Not really. Its called humour. People need to get over themselves. All this taking offence to anything these days, and speaking PC rollox.

But would you still deem it humour if you had a brain damaged child, who could not speak, walk and was fed through a tube?

Snipped - this is a family-friendly ski forum! Admin

However, I do know that parents of retarded, spastic and brain damaged children get very upset when people use these terms loosely, and I can honestly empathise.

I cycle and wouldn't consider riding to the shop without a helmet, I ski faster than I can ride but never really thought about a helmet until the last year or two.
