Here we go again

Fact: skiing has not become more dangerous.

Fact: it is not compulsory to wear head protection.

Fact: A couple of high profile injuries and deaths were blown out of proportion by the media

Opinion: Helmets should be worn when freeriding, skiing chutes and gulleys, and other dangerous areas. On a regular piste there is nothing to suggest the recent rise in helmet wearers is warranted

Free choice: you have a choice whether you want to look like a special needs day release or R2D2, or sport the traditional and ultra cool headgear of the ski fraternity, aka the bobble. (Tongue in cheek remarks before anyone flips a lid.....see what I did there....????)

Fact: the number of helmet wearers in ADH 2 weeks was about 20% to bobblers at 80% (a rough estimate but much fewer than I have seen in other resorts)

Opinion: people should ski within their ability, and if that is the case then why the sudden clamour for helmet wearing? Nothing has got more dangerous in recent years.

Fact: there is always a chance you could get taken out on the slopes by someone else. Is this good enough reason to feel the need to put your head in a lid? Most injuries I have seen, in fact change that to ALL, have been knee, leg or arm injuries. They will always happen, nothing cn change that.

I think its entirely up to the individual what they choose to wear. Of 4 of us who skied 2 weeks ago, 1 wore a helmet. The other 3 have never felt the inclination or need to sport one.
Those that choose to wear helmets, entirely up to them. Those of us who choose not to, entirely up to us, and thats the way it should be.

Theres been tons of threads and opinions on the subject on here in recent times, which resulted in my save the bobble campaign, all a bit of fun but with a serious undertone regarding the bullying of bobblers by lidders, which does go on. I will not accept being told I am putting myself at risk by not wearing a helmet. Other than that, may the opinions be respected and may the banter continue.

Vive le bobble. 8)

Still relatively new to the forum- Have not seen any other threads. Mr B would agree whole heartedly with you, (we both always ski within our capabilities). I am just one of those examples of one being nagged by friend to ditch the bobble, but I will give it a try and decide for myself. The bobble is still being packed.

I've been skiing without a helmet a bit more recently. I don't feel unsafe without one but definitely more comfortable with one on.

I traded the bobble for a lid this year, only reason was I just look so stupid wearing any sort of hat.Not one hat suits me as I have a large head

When I put the lid on with the goggles I felt it looked better.

I may drift back to the bobble if I find one that suits.

I guess I am a " Bobbelidder" is that allowed?

I feel I may get stoned at the wall for suggesting it )

thanks all, Interesting reading. I'm aware this is a hot topic and I did try to search the forums and couldn't find any threads covering this???

So the jury is still out, I think Tony raises some interesting points - I've always worn a helmet for mountain biking, I'm a keen motorcyclist and therefore certainly understand the benefits - I think the issue on the slopes stems to one of vanity, I dont see any down sides to wearing one so I think I will take one with me and see how it goes.......
