I like my helmet, keeps my head warm, my hair in place and has saved me from whacking myself in the head with my own ski!!
I agree it is a matter of choice as to whether you wear one or not.
However, I do take exception to Tony saying all helmet wearers look stupid, have you seen some of the hats on sale and even more incredible, being worn!!
I'll take my sleek helmet over some goat herders headwear anyday.
Who wears a helmet?

Thats really strange my daughter has never questioned why does she have to wear a helmet and her mum and dad do not.
Perhaps it might be that she has always worn one since the age of three .... but she has not once asked me to wear one
I have alway wanted to be Goat herder ... Vivi Le Bobble !!!!!!!

What I would like to just touch on is kids safety on the slopes ..... from an early age I have always skied with Little W between his Mum and me mainly for safety but also for teaching her to be able to turn at will in a follow the leader type of approach, it gives her a little protection from some of the idiots that we come across and teachers her to be able to turn at will to get her self out of trouble.
But I feel I am alone in this I have skied with and seen parents let their Little ones ski anywhere they like in fact all over the piste with their parents some time not being able to keep up or are miles in front.
It just seems odd to me that some parents seem to have no control or teach any ski discipline to their kids, we have all this talk about helmets ..... and there are parents out there not teaching their children the basics. I would be interested in how other parents teach ski discipline to their little one's.

Just come back from skiing with a group of mixed ability ladies - all now wearing a helmet. We noticed that in the groups of skiers we saw on piste they either all did or all didn't. Having said that - it keeps my ears beautifully warm and I don't notice it. Why not be safe! (One of our girls had recently skied in Serre Chevalier where her ski instructor questioned the fact that she wore a helmet - it would seem it was a very Non helmet resort!)

I know this has been done to death but thought I'd add a few of my observations as I haven't before!
After 7 years of happily skiing without a helmet this year I jumped ship and brought a helmet, why – mainly because I was planning more off-piste and it would keep the OH happy. I'll just wear it for the off-piste days I thought.
I went with (esf) off piste lessons in the morning and all but one turned up with helmets including the instructor. There was one French dude with an old school bobble, until the last day when even he turned up in a shiny new helmet!
On wearing a helmet – wow – never cold despite -20C temps, never too hot either, so light I'd forget I was wearing if it wasn't for the constant pleasure of warm ears, hearing at least as good as through the layers of hats/ear warmers that would have been required – bare ears not an option last week! I don't think I skied any different – always been more concerned about breaking arm/legs but not much you can do about that.
Overall despite initial scepticism I'm a full convert, didn't take it off all week and doubt I'll ever ski without it again. The only down side is the initial extra cost, now that's over I can't suggest a reason not to wear it. I don't want to see compulsory helmets but I'd certainly highly recommend to anyone!

Wearing mine for 2 seasons now, not really sure why I converted as I hate wearing hats but the lid didn't and hasn't bothered me.
I wasn't with the kids either trying to set an example, but they are back on board the trip at the end of this week and we will all be wearing them.
Did try skiing without it last year and felt odd not having it on, so the first opportunity to get it I did and definately don't feel any safer or braver as a skier for wearing it, just preference for all wear it, don't wear it.
To make it seem stranger I don't wear one out on the bike and probably potentially more danger and go faster, don't feel the need just like some skiiers don't feel the need and would hate someone saying to me I have to.
So there's a question, there seem to be a lot that enjoy their snow sports on here, of those of you that don't wear a helemt and cycle a lot, do you wear a helmet then?
Again no right or wrong but really IMHO, choice should prevail...

I enjoy mountain biking and would not contemplate going out without a helmet. Speeds up to 30mph over rocky ground = possibility of much damage!! I don't mind losing some skin but bashing my head on a rock doesn't seem like a good idea!
I "perceive" less risk when skiing (not sure if this is rational) but wear a helmet anyway. New to the sport and bought one as a matter of course when kitting up.
