Trencher,
That is the problem with many demo skis, they have rental type bindings,,so all my friends insist in trying them out! I will take your advice when I go to ski with you and bring only skis with rental type bindings! Will at least give the skis back at end of day! I am still trying to locate 5 pairs of skis, a "friend" was supposed to bring back to dealer! Seems he was lost between my house and the dealer! Cheers. |
Iceman,
In a ski boot you have two parts; the shell made of plastic and the liner (inside the shell) What I have is the liners. It is not heated , has no electrical element! Pavel |
Mr. Franklin touched on an issue that is very "delicate" and often never discussed among skiers!
Why you ask? At a risk of creating another long "heated" posting here it goes! We all realize that there are many types of skiers, so each types can make up decision to lend skis or not! The beginners see no problem and also do not see danger ( that is another topic Mr. Franklin should look into) The intermediate skier might lend skis if he/shhe feels you will take care of them and return them in the same state. Still you must have some "close" social relationship such as family, rugby mate, or close work mate! The experts never but never lend their skis! It is close to that taboo subject of "lending wife/husband"! It takes them many hours of "getting to know the ski", it takes them many hours to "modify" ski for skier, then the lend them? These "experts" at the end of a ski day examine their skis with a magnifying glass to see what new scratch is on base! These experts have a rag in ski bag to wipr off snow at end of day! Some experts have been known to "kiss" their skis at end of a great ski race or ski day! So you ask, "do they ever lend their skis"? I have done so three times and regretted it! First time One of my friends, who bought the same skis and who was skiing with me, constantly complained about these skis! The price was too high for what they did ( or did not do), this "shaped ski" bull was not true, etc...... After 30 minutes of this constant verbal blahhhhhh, we exchanged skis and I told him to do EXACTLY as I did! He was a new skier, the smile returned to his face! At bottom he insisted on having another go with my skis! After 5 runs,,,I insisted he give me back my skis! Now he saw the difference! The next time up the lift with him, I announced thatI had to go away to a more difficult run so I left him! I just could not want to hear him "complain on how ski shop did not tune his skis correctly" 2. The second time I lend my skis, it was to my wife! She had a important ladies race and she wanted that edge! She still has them! I have tried seduction, wimpering, pleading, blackmail to no avail! She rules! They are hers!!! 3.Last Spring I got a pair of 2008 Fischers SL World Cup skis to test. Since I could not really give my maximum on them ( I was due for some knee tune ups), I lent them to my son to test! You guessed it! I promised to dis-inherite him,I pleaded with him,I even sneaked into his house to find them, while he was away! He had hidden them! The devil! In conclusion,,,no do not lend skis! Do not ask to borrow skis! Rent or as you say on your side of the pond hire them! You will have a more serene family! PS By the way,,yes my wife did win the race and that is why she insists in keeping MY SKIS,,,they are her lucky skis! |
Dieke,
I need some more information about time you want to go, however based on what given I think I know what you are looking for. You have two choice unitially. The east which is Quebec Province or Western skiing If you want no lines lots of snow and variable ski runs, may I suggest inner British Columbia. Why? Most people do not know but there is a weather pattern which is called 'Chinook" which brings warm air from Japan via Pacific! All ski resorts in western BC get lots of heavy heavy wet snow! I even srayed for 4 days in Whistler with rain everyday! That they do not tell you! The Selkirks area is east of Rockies and gets softer ligther drier snow! Visit Bc tourist sites or ski sites! Big White has an excellent DVD they will send you! Big White is a starter! I would avoid Whistler due to road works for olympics and also over-priced lodging! Another excellent choice is Panorama. very "hiding" resort that most Europeans do not know, yet has great skiing, cheaper lodging in village and very very well groomed! Hope this helps! |

There is an excellent exercise all ski instructors know, to teach skiers correct pole position and correct hand position!
You see pole position and hand position are very much interrelated! Think of the pole like a "indicator" of your correct ski technique. One of the major indicators of an expert skier is "those quiet hands"! What does that mean? Arms and hands are steady, moving very evenly and softly! More like caresses! The poles should be parallel close to body, pointing downward towards snow surface! All that waving with poles is lost energy! Is dangerous to others and to you! You will soon find out ! It indicates how you are constantly moving about your upper body! Pretend you are carrying a tray with one half full glass in the center! Now ski in this manner. This is still a common certification test for ski instructors! Really! They are given a plastic tray with one plastic glass with wine half full! They must ski down an expert run without spilling wine!!!! All who fail must pay other instructors some wine!!! Try this other exercise. Take poles and place them on your palms which are facing to heaven! ( UP)! Now ski never allowing poles to fall off palms! Note I said palms NOT fist,,thus poles are free moving! This will teach you to have 'quiet' hands and also quiet torso!!! PS. Bode Miller is Bode! Unique, special! Always on the edge..... Nobody skis like him,,even the top ski racers of all other nations! Do not even try to ski like him!!! |
Davew,
You brought up an excellent issue Dave when you mentionned Gray Rocks! 99% od skiers do not know this ski center and just pass by it in a wink when they go to Tremblant! Let us be honest,,it is a small center, however many skiers would be better to go to this resort for one week for the following reasons; best groomed runs in North best ski instruction in Quebec more lesson time than another ski resort in Quebec best organized social evenings in North skiers from all over the world best boot fitter in Quebec works there And finally the very best ski meals you will every have and I mean ever!!! Smart man that Dave skiing at Gray Rocks! Now did you know that the owner of Gray Rocks, Mr. Wheeler introduces Ryan to Tremblant! Even "walked" with him to the top ! If ever you want the flavor of the 'old" skiing holidays and really learn to ski go to Gray Rocks!!! |
