Cervinia - Aosta Valley Help Needed
Started by User in Italy, 2 Replies
You would also want to look at renting a car at GVA and driving to Cervinia. Its a 2hr.55min. easy drive.
Tolls including the Mont Blanc tunnel will cost (one way) 54Euros.
Half a tank of gas.
Makes good sense if you are a few to share the expenses.
Been doing this for many years now with clients that I pick up at GVA.
Rate the resorts you've visited.

Megeve, The French Alps
10/10 :D
Its village is family friendly and the the skiing will satisfy even the best of skiers. A preponderance of upper intermediate pistes will make the majority of skiers and their families holiday one of the best ever.

A ski area "cut in the trees" so even if there are "white out" conditions or high winds you can still ski and visibility is not a problem and the lifts are still operational.

A fantastic snow making infrastructure insures great skiing from early December to mid April.

Inexpensive lift passes (in all of France)!

From anywhere in the UK and most of Europe ... you can fly into (GVA) Geneva International Airport in less than 1 hour. Another 1hr. 10min...easy drive and you have arrived.

Private or group??

Having taught private lessons for over 30 years in both Colorado and in France (Megeve), your question is a very good one.
The question comes down to cost, return on investment, personal dedication, and the choice of ski instructors.

To get spot on professional error correction there is nothing that is more immediate than a private lesson. Go for a minimum of two to three hours.

Class lessons will be less targeted to the individual. Make sure to choose an instructor that has a philosophy of just not skiing in front of the group all the time.

Once you have found an instructor (Class or Private) that is giving you what you are looking for in the way of quality attention and tips, comments... make sure to book him/her again.

How to find an instructor... look on the hill while your skiing if you see one that is teaching in a way that pleases and could satisfy your needs (you can follow him and his lesson for a while) go over and introduce yourself and get his card !

We at www.SkiProsMegeve.com teach only private and small corporate groups. We reserve up to a year in advance.

I hope this helped,
Megeve Mike

Megeve Car Hire or Transfer

Renting a car at Geneva International Airport (GVA) or Taxi Transfer to Megeve?
It is important to note that when coming to ski in the Alps, all ski areas are close by. The possibility of having a means of transportation will allow you a large amount of flexibility in more ways than one. The ability to get to your destination area and back to the airport will not be of least interest.

I’m talking here of the possibility of going on day trips based from your base area. We at www.SkiProsMegeve.com often do day trips and ski area tours in the French, Italian and Swiss Alps based from Megeve.
From Megeve you can easily ski 4 ski areas in less than a 25 minute drive, (subject to weather and road conditions)! If you’re willing to push your daily drive to one hour you can ski in Italy and get to French ski areas that will give you access to Swiss Alps areas! A nice little restaurant in each ski area is not to be resisted and allows you to taste the local fare which can change due to the specificities of each region and valley!

Note: When renting your car insist that you take possession on the Swiss side “sector” of the Geneva Airport and NOT the French side! This is most important as the car that you hire will be equipped, standard, with: Snow Chains, a ski rack, and a Swiss Auto Route Pass. This will/could save you a bunch of money in drop-off charges and tolls, ease of transporting skis and driving distance as the French side is much farther to get into and out of than the Swiss side is to the destination ski areas.
Should you rent on the French side, all of the above is an extra!
Also, try and gas up when possible in Switzerland as it less expensive.

If you are flying in to ski the French Alps and Megeve you have the following possibilities. Chambery Airport, Geneva Airport and Grenoble Airport are all approximately one hour’s drive away. This makes Megeve a highly accessible ski destination, area even for a long weekend, from any airport in the UK. Leave the UK at 08:00 and you’re on the pistes by 12:00 noon. Be aware that the above can vary depending upon traffic and weather conditions.

Driving: From Geneva you will go to the A40 direction Mont Blanc/Chamonix and turn off at Sallanches and about 17 kilometers direction Albertville, to Megeve.

Driving: In the event of bad weather:
If you drive from Grenoble and Chambery, direction A 41- E712, to Annecy/Geneva/La Roche sur Foron and get on the A40 direction Mont Blanc/Chamonix and turn off at Sallanches and about 17 kilometers direction Albertville, to Megeve.

Good weather alternative:

If you drive from Grenoble: A 41- E712 to the A 430 direction Albertville. Take the N212 at Albertville up the beautiful “Gorges de Arly” to Megeve. Please note however that this route can be closed due to rock and mud slides and traffic can be a problem!

Early Season Snow?

Between Val Claret and Le Lac... a 5 min. bus ride or a 10 min. Walk
Lets hope that what some are saying is true ...that the Alps should benefit from an "El Nino" that will be kind to those of us here in the French Alps. See Climate Prediction Center: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/regional_monitoring/

Courchevel Ski Hire and ski lessons

For ski hire the "Ski Set" folks in Courchevel 1850 are tops.

For ski lessons
The people in the small ski schools are great for private lessons in native english. For class lessons the big schools (ESF and ESI) have native english speakers and are also less expensive.... always insist on "Native English speakers" when possible as it is not just a question of language skills it's also a cultural aspect and important when learning.
