Planning a ski trip next year to Chamrousse - advice please

Davster,
I have had a number of day trips to Chamrousse at different stages of the season. My answers to your questions: 1 It is usually quiet on weekdays because the resort is not used by many foreign tour companies. It is very busy at weekends and on French public holidays because it is the nearest reasonably sized resort to Grenoble and lots of locals ski at these times. 2 In my experience the snow is usually good at the end of January and throughout February. January will be quieter. The last week of February is a French School half term week. 3 It will not be too cold for beginners if they have the right kit. 4 There are plenty of suitable runs for beginners as well as some decent skiing for experienced skiers. 5 It is an attractive resort with mainly French visitors. I hope this helps. Geoff Smith |
We had some very good holidays in Obergurgl some years ago.We were lucky with the snow conditions, had skiing to the back door of the hotel and the pistes were uncrowded. In those days the resort had a limit on numbers. I don't know if that is still the case.
It is not an especially big resort but ample for a week's skiing. Geoff Smith |
Hi Gareth,
I did the same in 1983. The knee was immobilised for six weeks. After nine weeks I was back on the squash courts and I have ski-ed every year since. Now that I am retired I am able to ski for two months each year. Fingers crossed- so far so good. Of course we are all different and I may just have been very lucky. Anyway good fortune with your recovery and future skiing. Geoff Smith |
Tony,
I spend a lot of time, Summer and Winter, in the Oisans and Ecrins areas of France. I know Les Deux Alpes quite well. The glacier is large and it is invariably open for Summer skiing. Conditions are usually very good. However it is very popular with Italians and for the last few summers it has been very crowded. So good news and bad news! Geoff Smith |
Try the website of the British Ski Club for the Disabled.
Good luck, Geoff Smith |
I suggest that you take the train (TGV) from Paris to Grenoble and then catch a bus to Chamrousse. The bus station is next to the railway station.
It might be wise to check times in advance. Geoff Smith |

Adam,
The following blacks are usually without moguls: La Fare; Clocher de Macle; Sarenne; Glacier; and Cristeaux. They are all machined regularly. Other blacks are machined less frequently or not at all and have moguls. The best mountain restaurants in my view are: Chez Passoud, Les Airelles and La Grange all in the Vaujany sector, Lac Besson( which is outstanding)in the Alpe d'Huez domain; Perce Neige in the Oz en Oisans area; and Combe Haute in the Sarenne Gorge at the end of the run. Night life in Vaujany is fairly limited to a few bars and one night club. Hope this helps if it is not too late! Geoff Smith |
