Fellows, fellows,
You have missed the point. It is like finding a "precious" artifact and trying to decide what it was for,,with the modern context! To appreciate this lady you must know Wayne Wong and his influence! She is taking flight! Off a mogul! Perfect take off position for that long flight to next mogul! Yes knees tight,,but that is for long flight! Note tight air dynamic suit! Specifically made to decrease air turbulance! Notice "vents" of suit,,to allow cool air to enter suit for "in flight cooling" This was far ahead of the modern zippered suits for cooling! No No this great women skier is perfection in all ways! That is why she is the icon of all real skiers! They can appreciate her form! |

Ellistine,
Great great skis, very snappy and "responsive"! Nice wall! Have you seen the "Keep your tips up" poster girl by Lange? I not I can send you a copy which I am sure you can get blown up which your contacts! It was and still is the ski icon of all male skiers in the 70"s ! Just ask Jan! I had this poster in my shop and son took it for his apartment. Lost it after first party! Now I have it framed and "bolted" to wall in front of my tuning bench! Get it! You parties will never be the same! And you will never ever again keep your tips up while skiing since you want to be grounded at all times! Will send picture if needed! |
Trencher,
On site it mentions rear,,but let me tell you what happened just three hours ago. I had a pair of Atomic SL 12 165 cm. that I sold to a friend. They had theses bindings and the front housing cracked on the top! I bought the skis from Atomic rep! Whent to Atomic head office here and got new pair of units! So if you have such bindings check front AND back for cracks! Seems supplier to Atomic did not give high quality plastic components and they were aware of problem first year of production! I had my rear units changed twice by rep! |

I have two great skis that I still use to shock "modern skiers"!
I have a pair of 207 cm. Atomics Super G cut and they carve very well! However the 205 cm. VR17, with Look Nevada N17 really do the job with great SL tight turns that any "modern" ski would have difficulty following! There is a saying, "it ain't the gun,,but the gunner" that makes the difference! In my area we have "old time" races, in which shortest ski allowed is 200cm. You get seconds off ski time if you have boots 20 years older, if you have bindings in pre-1980s and if you have bamboo poles then 2 seconds are shaved off! I always win with my hand-made Austrian leather boots (not made in Neiderau), knickers and woolen socks, bamboo poles, and wine skin!!!! Of course you can still ski with older skis,,,but really those new skis are easier to turn! I still drive my 911 and it gives me great pleasure,,,but not for 2 week trip to Utah! |
For some of you who have excellent memories, you will remember that two years ago, I had mentionned a ski company that had bindings that would tend to crack!
Atomic has now posted an "official recall" of some of their units. Visit their site. In North America skiers get a free new unit! Wish you all great skiing in 2009! If you are skiing in Neiderau and see an "older male skier" with a strange ski vest,,say allo to DaveMac! Pavel |
Dave Mac,
As always you bring up an excellent point which I forgot to mention! Reading the run or slope! Very often beginner and intermediate skiers are so "overwhelmed" with so much input information as they ski that brain says, " does not compute" and goes into survival mode! Too much information = stress = stiff (afraid mode)! Your suggestion is an excellent one! Let the more experienced skier be the "seeing dog" picking the best most effective path! I am always amazed at beginner skiers who have a very, very wide ski run,,yet seem to ski like deer caught in bright lights,,following a narrow 2 meter path where all other skiers have pasted! I always say, "you have paid for ALL the ski runs,,thus take advantage of all the runs! For you lucky skiers who will "visit" Jan's place,,I am preparing for him a DVD with many such skiing errors via pictures and videos! Not so much to be negative but to learn from other skiers mistakes! It will make your holiday happier and you will become better skiers! Yes reading the course is a competence that all expert skiers (and ski racers) must have! Thanks for comment! Now Dave Mac,,tell me how do you "read a women skier" to determine if she is an expert ( of course in the bar not on slope)! To make it easy on all others you are allowed ONE question! NOT ,,"are you an expert"!!!! Dave Mac has much more experience. He is not allowed a question! Just a look! A peek! Perhaps a stare! Merry Christmas all! |
Tima,
Do not think in terms of that ski boot or that ski boot because someone "who has thin" feet likes them. Think instead of trying all sorts of boots (at this point forget price). This means at least 1 hour of fitting (per boot)! Some you will reject in 1 minute! Then one will come around that will fit just right. I have very strange feet and I have yet never had a boot that I could take form store to slope! All my boots are "modified"! I suspect you are a beginner so you do not know what to "feel" in a boot! 1. No pressure in one spot after 30 minutes 2. Toes are free to "wiggle" inside boot with all buckles tight 3. Ease of flex. You should be able to move fore/aft with ease and not feel any pressure points anywhere. 4. No up/down free play in heel area (if so no big problem since you caninsert heel lifter) 5. No free play zone in cuff area ( if you can insert TWO fingers in cuff, must adjust buckles) Boots are more important that; skis poles ski jacket and for some husbands! Hope this helps you! |
Wanderer,
The following "expert" has its limitations depending where he/she is skiing. Often (if not always) expert skier will do one or two warm up runs with boots all undone and jacket still not zipped up for serious skiing. Then is a great time to do "follow the leader" If you can follow thos two tracks ( as seen in Jan's pictures) from top to bottom,,you are doing something right! If you can also "interprete" ski lines,,those marks left once a good skier as "cut the hill",,then you can use these lines which look like railroad tracks on snow. The idea , if you want to improve, is never accept how you ski now! Strive to improve at all times! Not to look great for others but for yourself! That is how you become an expert! You see you can not buy the "title" like you can a car, suit, house, latest Ipod or 60" flat screen TV. You must work at it! |
