10 Mortal Skier Sins
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 4 Replies
Brucie,
Hope you had a great ski holiday regardless of sinful skiers!
What such persons do not understand is that they reveal to their friends, or fellow skiers their true nature!

I host many business conferences and have people from all over the world come to these events! These are "important" people,,yet they also tuck away food! My security people then come to see me and ask me what to do since all of this is on video!

Here scomes the "punch line"!

At end of meeting,,I ask all participants to take what they want back to hotels, for their families, for friends! When those who did so "before" invitation come to table,,the staff just casually mention that they already had their portion!

Clearly the portions given out at end of meeting is 10 times larger than what was selected "before my invitation"!

The message is given with politeness and diplomacy!

That is why we have manners.

10 Mortal Skier Sins

We often do not talk about sins these days! Less even when it gets to skier sins!

I realize it is a “delicate” subject but an event that just happened to me,,forces me to present this post! I have realized that many skiers do many mortal ski sins out or “ignorance”! Their parents never told them about these mortal skier sins!

I was not aware that there are levels of sins,,from “mild” sins to the heavy –weighty sins until my wife,,,a catholic explained to me all the “differences”. The sins I am referring to are mortal sins! Just one will send you to skier hell very very fast so read on!
I am skiing with an older man whom I assumed was well versed in the sin subject! One ski trip with him made me realize that it was not the case! So for all of you who did not have a ski mentor initiating you to the 10 mortal skier sins here they are! I am sure , the more mature skiers on this site will “contribute” more sins!

1. This is the sin that started this post! I am in a hotel near a major ski resort and my skier friend tells me,,he will unload car, while I get room keys and ski lift tickets! All is fine until in the morning when,,,,,,I discover HE LEFT SKI BOOTS IN CAR!!!!!!!! This is one of the most serious skier sins! It can cause instant skier divorce! It does result in pain worst than carrying the cross!
Never ever in any circumstances leave ski boots in trunk (boot) of car!

2. This sin seems very innocent and acceptable to many skiers,,,but to true skier it should never happen! It is starting to ski at 10 AM! In all my life I have never started skiing at 10 AM! It is like arriving late to your wedding! It is missing Christmas. Worst ,,,,,it is arriving late on your first date! Try just once to get to ski resort when to chairs are quiet, when the coffee is just being brewed. When the runs are just lines of perfect corduroy! When you know there is no one ahead of you and you can go for that “over-drive” speed on your skis!
3. Calling your work in gondola! Nothing,,nothing is more important than your skiing! Nothing is more distracting than to hear “problems” at work and these days you know for sure it will be problems! That is why you are on holiday,,to get away! To remain sane and happy! It indicates your poor manners, your lack of maturity towards self needs and lack of respect towards skiing! I will not ski with anyone who has a cell phone! Please do not tell me you keep it for security!!!!! That will be another long long discussion that Dave will have to stop!
4. Honesty has many forms. Honesty towards self is perhaps the most important since if you lie to yourself then you are close to “fantasy” land!
You all can read since you are on this site reading this post! You all know your level of competence in regards to; driving car, driving F1 race car and I am sure you would not ,,,,for a second consider driving on a F1 race course!
Yet as skiers it seems everyone can ski down “expert” run. There is a common misconception that once you “ski” down expert run,,you are given a certificate stating you are “expert”! Not so! I understand some skiers desire to inflict on themselves mental and physical pain so chose the most difficult, most steep ski runs! This sin can cause life time trauma, many sleepless nights and possible divorce! Be honest with self. Read ski resort map! Ask others who have gone before you!

5. The next skier’s sin is so common,,many will dispute that it is a sin! It is a sign of the times! Rules, barriers, ropes etc,,, in ski resorts are there for a reason. To protect you. The ski resort offers enough challenge to all skiers of all levels! Yet many skiers believe the “other side” is better! The other side will make me a better skier. The other side will give me “bragging” rights at the bar. These skiers are doing so to “prove” they are expert..radical, extreme! That is what the popular media is conveying! This sin will cost you,,my friend. It just might cost you the ultimate price! The tragedy is that many skiers are not even capable of ‘taking” care of themselves in such situations and call, daddy, mommy, the ski patrol when nature throws a curve! Enough said about this sin!
6. This sin is truly more of a sin of total ignorance,,but never the less it is a mortal sin since it can cause death! In all sports there are customs, rules of conduct, “expected” safety related behaviours. In past a mentor, or teacher would slowly introduce these customs, rules to neophyte skier! That is for his/her own survival! Now, once you buy skis,,,,,you know everything about skiing. You go on net and truth is revealed! Not so! There are many many sins going on at all times on ski trail that often I must blush! Here are some;
-sitting down in middle of ski trail
-sitting down just at end of ski lift
-drinking with gang just after a turn in a ski trail
-talking with 9 friends at ski lift (not in line)
-bringing in chalet your boards or skis
-going up alone in a 6 skier lift
-using vulgar/raw language about a teacher in your school
-making various bodily “sounds” ,,from various bodily openings in a gondola
(I am sure others will add to this list)

7. In my area/region, we have special areas to “unload” skiers and for handicapped skiers! They are well indicated! Those skiers that come skiing at 2 PM have to park 1 km. away, so they park in the unloading or handicapped zones! This sin is not out of ignorance but sheer “self-centered” attitude! You all know who you are, and why you do this to other fellow skiers! No need to continue with this sin!
8. This sin is committed by sinners not only on ski centers but in all social activities. You have all been “victim” to this sin. To some skiing is another way to “project” ones “social standing”. To clearly demonstrate to the lesser beings that my skis are better, more expensive. My suit is a “designer” suit! That is why we see skis made of rocks at $4,000. Skis with expensive car logos, and suits with “unique logos”! Sorry but the only way you get respect and admiration from skiers is HOW YOU SKI! Not how much money you can spend! I am sure this sin will start much discussion.

9. I call this sin, “must get my moneys worth” sin! The reasoning and justification for this sin goes something like this. I saved up a lot of money for this trip (or my parents did) and now I want to get the very very most for this money! I will eat all the food I get for free,,and even more (just tuck a bread, cheese, meats for later). I will ski as fast as possible to get as many runs I can get into a day! I will push into lines to get more runs. You all have seen this type of sinners! Nature has a way to teaching them. It is called the Wednesday call! Just visit any sites which provide pictures of groups on “school ski breaks” and you will clearly see those sinners!
10. The last sin seems the least important. The one that is trivial. Yet is is the one that has the most profound effect over a lifetime. I call it the “selling yourself short” sin! It is based on wanting “the thrill, the rush, the ecstasy” now! Without working at it. Without taking the time to climb up the ecstasy stairs and mastering how to get that rush! Sinners will live a life time of “uncontrollable” rushed, while the others will learn to have a lifetime of constant on demand ecstasy! You control the level and pleasure on the ski run if you take the time to learn. It truly lasts longer and is more intense! Yours (the sinners) is close to fear,,mine is nirvana.
Hope you all enjoyed this post. If you recognized some of the sins you have done,,,it now is your choice. You may say, Pavel is full of it, or you may consider looking for a more happy ski holiday next time!

Respectfully,

Read this and it will explain what tree wells do!
A 15-year-old Bountiful girl died earlier this week in a skiing accident at Alta Ski Area.

Megan Pysnak was with her parents and youngest sister about 4 p.m. Wednesday when she became separated from the group, said Alta Town Marshal Mike Morey.

"She had gone off into the trees on a run," said family friend Brett Blake. "[The family] was at the bottom of the hill. They knew it was unlike Megan not to join them right after the run."

The family called ski patrol, but it was the girl's father who found Megan about 40 minutes later in a wooded area near the Vail Ridge run, about 150 feet east of the Sunnyside ski lift, Morey said.

The girl had fallen in a deep, narrow hole in the snow around a tree and her head was buried, Blake said. She was unconscious and flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead Thursday morning, apparently of asphyxiation, Blake said. She was not wearing a helmet.

Blake called Megan Pysnak an "exceptional person," who despite her young age, had been accepted at Brigham Young University for the upcoming fall semester.

Pysnak was home-schooled most of her life before entering Bountiful High School last year, and was in the middle of her junior year.

A cheerful but quiet girl at school, Pysnak could likely not have guessed how many students would send cards, remembrances and good wishes after her death, Blake said.

She was especially

close to her father, Bernard, and often left notes like "May Rocks!" for her youngest sister, May. She typically skied two or three times a month with her family.

"They were not a family of great means, and they would go up in the afternoons and ski for free," Blake said. Alta offers free skiing on the Sunnyside lift after 3 p.m.

She also leaves behind two older stepsisters, two other sisters, and a brother.

Onno Wieringa, spokesman and general manager for Alta Ski Area, said investigators are looking at the accident to try to determine whether safety measures may be improved. It could be a difficult task, he said, since Pysnak was alone and it's unknown exactly what happened.

"We always feel bad when someone gets hurt. Somebody that young ... it's just not fair," Wieringa said.

Blake said Pysnak's family was "really feel[ing] the loss and the pain," and was not able to speak publicly Saturday.

Jobster,
First let me share with you,,, your "stress" and give you hope!

The fact that he asked about skiing,,tells you all!

Of course he can ski again!

But,,,,he must learn to listen to his body!

I did not have such a major medical event,,however I was told that I could not and would not ever ski again! This was after a minor operation!

In effect the operation made me a better skier,,since I had no more pain!

If you look at all the research published on health and wellness, physical exercise is the basis of a long life! It is the level and type of exercise which must be modulated and adapted!

Three months after operation, I could barely do 30 minutes of skiing. So I stopped! Then I did 60 minutes and so on,,until now I can do 7 hours easily!

With hope your husband will recover faster since he has goal!
With hope your husband soon be skiing,,and perhaps even better since I suspect he will have more oxygen going to muscles!

Just take time!

Give him hope!

Keep us updated on progress!

DaveMac,

I have thought of surprising someone since I do travel to some "hot spots" just south!

I never say no!

As far as all that work, mentionned in the last post, I have all that since in my work,I must video tape many events and objects! I have learned to edit all and produce DVDs of quality!

I am now doing it for my pleasure. I have made a camera "pouch" from an old ski patrol chest unit for phones! Also I have taken my old knee brace apart and have installed a camera screw just above the knee! Great low shots! Got idea from viewing Ellistine's videos.

If you are with Jan,,ask him to show you the DVDs! You might enjoy looking back!

Have a great holiday DaveMac! Will be thinking of you soaring in,,,,

Respectfully,
Pavel

DaveMac,
You understand.
The respect of the run, the repect of others!
Now what I see is skiers laughting at "friends" who fall,,or worst goating them to "take that higher jump or cliff"!

I am taking a 71 year old man to one of the steepest runs in North America (east of Rockies),,however we have been "practicing" for this run for two years! I refused to take him last year,,,now he is working twice as hard to set quick edge and hold that edge so mountain does not swallow him up!

I promise to send you a picture of him at the bottom. I am sure that smile will be of a 13 year old!
By all means "challenge yourself" but be prepared! You have in England a group, the SAS who can go "miracles" but they prepare and prepare more,,then finally again prepare!
That is also the way to ski such chutes!

Have a great holiday in the Austrian valley,,and please wear that vest with pride! It has done many kilometers in that bowl!

Tony,
Yes!

He is trying to "seduce me" into cancelling my trip to Utah in order to take a visit to Auhof!
I am a little afraid to ski with him since I can not yet hold myself up with poles!

And those tracks he makes,,,,,,

I will have to practice more!
e
Yes I am practicing my Austrian accent since there is an FIS sanctioned event near my home and I will attend!

The best person for picture issues is Dave (from this site)! He does wonders.

Now if he could "inplant" cams on our foreheads while we ski,,,,,,

But that is for 2010 site!!!
