Good map :D , like ise I can see some Swiss resorts are missing. Are there plans to add in the detail?
ellistine I think you're right about Abondance. I'm sure I read about it a few months ago, shame really.
Gareth Fair, as you want to go to France, have you contacted the relevant Tourist Offices, or had a look at the websites offering private holiday lets yet?
If that has yielded nothing then try Logis de France, many of their small hotels do offer the flexibility you need.

I know its a resort really but does anybody actually rate it?
Or is it ....well another Whistler?

Well, definitely not another Whistler  . It's a small village at the base of the Tignes system, close to the dam. Gondola access to the main Tignes ski area. Several long runs back into Brevieres which are quite challenging, but conveniently finish outside several restaurants and bars :D
Some Advice Needed

Hi, A couple of suggestions for you. Consider Wengen/Grindelwald or Zermatt. Each resort has plenty of non skier activities available, and are attractive places in their own right, with quality hotels. In addition these resorts offer non-skiers the chance to meet up with skiers for lunch at altitude, with cable car access.
Short transfer to Wengen/Grindelwald from Berne.

We were thinking about visiting Hintertux this summer but perhaps Zermatt may be a better option. One of our party is a non skier which makes the short summer skiing a nice option. How far away are the summer pistes from the hotels generally?

For Zermatt, the cable car, runs up from the village in several stages and takes around 40 minutes. Add on to that time, the distance from your hotel or apt. I will be staying in one around 3-5 minutes walk away. As Zermatt is car free, many of the hotels transport guests using electric taxis.
There is access for non skiers to the highest point, as the journey is by cable car. Naturally the resort has many activities on offer during the summer.

Rather a sweeping generalisation, by inference, methinks, about France. In my experience there are many French resorts that are far from being unstylish or outmoded ( or 'naff' in the current jargon) . Switzerland, by and large, is a great place to ski. I have had good holidays there in five resorts I have also very much enjoyed skiing in several locations in France.

I think that it is a pity that , on this list, there is a tendency on the part of some subscribers to do down some countries as far as the quality of skiing, or of ski resorts, is concerned. My experience tells me that there are, of course, pros and cons for particular resorts anywhere in the world but that generalisations about countries need to be treated with considerable caution.

Keep smiling,

Geoff Smith

I think you may be referring to this part of ise's post.

What you will find is the standard of accommodation is higher here, more spacious and just cleaner. Providing you avoid some places, Verbier, Haute Nendaz (a complete and utter toilet) and the PdS (less naff than France but still naff).

I believe that ise may be referring to the difference in the quality of the tourist accommodation between France and Switzerland. Having stayed in numerous pokey, dirty French apartments, I do tend to agree with his view on this, as the places I have stayed in Switzerland have been much smarter, cleaner and better value.
Having visited Haute Nendaz a couple of winters' ago, our household nicknamed it Bracknell on Ski (with apologies to residents of Bracknell).

Deffinately.

We're booked up for the coming season on group holidays booked by other people (Austria and Italy). I'll be refering back to this post for future seasons though! Good stuff.

ellistine perhaps you might wish to consider a short break in a Swiss resort this coming winter, before embarking on a full booking in the future. Lots of Swiss resorts are geared up for short breaks, and the transport links are generally excellent :D

The Ski Club article reads like an advertisement for Ski Fresh Tracks, Verbier and Crystal! Is this journalism or advertorial?
ise great post :D
