we have never been skiing before but have been recommended to go to Ancelle or Orcieres-Merlette.

There are 6 of us (2 adults and 4 kids)

We are hoping to fly to Nice and drive up. The dates are most likely 13 to 20 Feb (as that is when Ryanair are cheapest)

What I can't seem to find is how much it is going to cost to stay in an appartment, get skis, passes and lessons for us and to do it in English if possible.

Welcome to J2ski :D As you are beginners, and you want your service to be in English, it may be better for your family to book a package from a Tour Operator this time round.
The resorts you are suggesting are quite small, and you may find only French spoken within the tourist industry. As you seem to be needing English to get the booking sorted out, you may find it hard going. How would your children cope in a ski school class where only French is spoken? I have not seen any packages on offer either. Why choose these resorts, and I feel that to choose a ski trip based on Ryanair having cheap flights to Nice is a little shortsighted, but I'm sure you have your reasons.

I would suggest some additional criteria:
Easy big Beginnners area
English spoken
Short transfer
Ski in-ski out
Off slope activities
English speaking support (A Rep)
Childcare facilities
Dedicated childrens teaching

There are many facets to a ski trip. You are in a "don't know" situation right now. If you get this trip right, you will learn loads and can DIY next time. If this trip is hard work, you won't be back as a family.
Auto socks vs Chains

They have been around for a number of years. If you take Autosocks instead of chains, then you risk being turned around by the French police when chains are signed as mandatory if the resort approach roads require it. The French police don't recognise them as an alternative to chains.

i have a uvex helmet at the moment, with some bolle goggles. i'm afraid i don't know the model of the uvex helmet... i can't seem to find a matching image anywhere on the internet :( but, i can't see anywhere where one would attach a guard to it... unless i went DIY with a srill, whcih would surely ruin the structural integrity of the helmet, rendering it worthless.

You will need to choose a helmet suitable for slalom competition to get the chin guard option. Or, find one suitable for skiercross which are like moto-x helmets. Here's a couple of examples.

You will end your love affair with the letter 'Z' (pronounced 'zed' not 'zee') and the suffix "ize" will be replaced by the suffix "ise."

Wonderful stuff Pavel :D

Hmmm, I wonder if the big fella will spot this )

Now just to mix things up a bit. What if I leave the apartment in the morning already having taken a dissolved multi vit tab in water. Is it still advisable to have more glucose ?

Absolutely, the glucose is for energy :D

And the next big question is what is the ideal lunch which will allow you still to be fit for skiing ?

A 3 hour long 5 course blowout with 2 bottles of wine of course

Oh dear ise has gone all technical on you
I also have ongoing foot probs following surgery, and I trust my feet to these folks.

My orthopaedic surgeon has written to Colin Martin there, to say how impressed he was with the support made for me. I have had supports made for my shoes and also my ski boots, and Colin works with both national ski teams and recreational skiers.
It's a long way for you to travel, just how much do your feet hurt :)

I like to chomp muesli bars when I'm skiing. To drink, Isostar fluid seems to be better than plain water for me. If I drink "enough" water, then I spend the remaining skiing time planning my next toilet stop. My friends will testify to this!

Please build more toilets for women skiers. Have you ever tried skiing bumps with a full bladder
